Joining Golden and Benson were returning series stars Charisma Carpenter, Juliet Landau, James Marsters, Emma Caufield Ford, James Charles Leary and newcomer to the Buffyverse, Laya DeLeon Hayes.

Christopher Golden and Amber Benson, co-writers and directors for the project, discuss bringing the new multiverse Buffy world vision together and how they decided which characters to bring back to tell their story.

Charisma Carpenter and Emma Caufield Ford discuss what is was like to step back into the characters of Cordelia and Anya.

James Leary and James Masters talk about the opportunities the new Audible series opens up for them to explore another side of the characters of Clem and Spike.

New slayer, Laya DeLeon discusses what it’s like to be the new kid on the block

You obviously play this really well-known character. One of the first things that jumps out is his voice. How did you manage to sustain that kind of deep, solid voice for so long, for so many scenes?

Tom Sturridge: I guess because I didn’t think about the physicality of it, how to create it. I thought about what Neil told me, which was that Dream should sound like the voice inside your head. He should sound like the voice that summons you to sleep. And he should sound like the voice that guides you through your fears and your fantasies. And I started to think about what that would sound like, and it was much more trying to realize that intention than about trying to have a deep voice.

I haven’t seen anything other than the trailer. It’s an amazing trailer, and I’m super excited. When I saw the trailer, I was like, “This is the guy. This is the guy.” So it is an intimidating kind of character to try to personify, and a lot of it has to do with physicality as well. So how did you think about the arc of where your character’s starting and where you’re going and tackle that? But also just mentally, you have an arc, you have a huge arc to go through.

Tom Sturridge: I mean, so I see what’s incredibly bizarre about adapting a graphic novel is unlike anything else, you have these images to return to… But so with realizing the physicality, a lot of the ideas were generated quite literally from looking at these images and finding ways to make them breathe and move. The arc of his character, I think the most important thing within the story we’re telling in this season is the birth of empathy inside of him. I think that comes from being impotent and powerless for the first time in his existence, and suddenly being in a space where he has to think about who he is.

And most importantly, he requires the help of humans to regain that power. To find his tools of office. He needs Johanna Constantine. He needs Matthew, who is a human inside a Raven. He needs to understand how John Dee feels, to try and win back that ruby. And then, most importantly, his sister Death teaches him how important it is to feel how other creatures feel because that’s the only way you can take them into the afterlife. And I think that education really changes him and opens him up, changes his relationship with Lucifer, changes the way that he deals with dreams and nightmares who have betrayed him. Yeah. I think the key arc is him opening up the insecurity he has, and starting to feel how other creatures feel who aren’t him.

Neil always says that Dream’s most important title is Prince of Stories and I just wanted to know, what does that mean to you, both for the character and in general? As a storyteller, as an actor, what is it about…? And this is a story about stories. Talk about that power.

Tom Sturridge: One of the most important things to me about Sandman is exactly what you just said. It is a story about stories. Although it has a cohesive narrative, it’s about how the stories we tell each other inflict themselves upon our lives and upon our dreams. Neil Gaiman is a storyteller. I am just a prop in that way..

I think what’s really important is for large groups of people to bear witness to the same stories because I think we are all different and we all think differently and react differently, but we can only really understand each other if we talk about the same things. Does that make sense?

Like if we all go and watch Sandman together, we’re all going to think entirely different things about it. But there’ll be a bond in us talking about what we think about it. And that’s why stories began around campfires. That’s why they continued into theaters. And that’s why they went to the cinemas because it’s about people being in a dark space and listening.

Like recognizing something that’s not from their own experience.

Tom Sturridge: Exactly. Yeah. But then, talking about it with a person next to them who potentially also has had a different experience.

Do you think Dream has that lesson to learn because he’s been sort of jaded by his own realm or his own existence? Or what does it mean to him?

Tom Sturridge: I think it’s complicated. I think that Dream contains… He contains the fears and fantasies of every single being in the universe, which means he does understand how other things, creatures, feel, but he has to hold it inside. And his burden is this kind of discipline that he has to have, and that’s why he seems so enclosed. And I think what he needs to learn is how to open up so that he can better understand what his responsibilities are.

If he felt everything that everyone who’s ever existed ever felt, it would be too much.

Tom Sturridge: Too much. Exactly. So you have to hold it in. That’s why he seems so insolated.

And then in terms of when we first meet Dream, obviously he’s been imprisoned…been through a lot. How would you describe his sort of emotional state in the first episode? And also for you, having to do those kind of naked, vulnerable scenes, how did you feel filming those?

Tom Sturridge: I think I probably felt relatively similar to him. The glass sphere that they constructed took such a long time to break apart, to get out, that actually I would spend hours in there because otherwise it would just slow down the shot so much. So genuinely felt imprisoned. But I think it’s the first time in his existence that he’s become powerless, or at least significantly less powerful. And I think that that is… if not frightening, it’s a cause for contemplation. I think he’s angry. I think he wants vengeance. I think that there is danger and a violence in him, a need to destroy those who have done this. And I think that’s the energy that begins the journey. But as the key episode, episode six, when he talks to Death, he’s fueled by this vengeance, but it leads nowhere. What was exciting for him was a quest, and the moment the quest is completed, he feels empty. There just has to be something more than hate.

One of the first questions, my burning question is Tom Ellis as Lucifer has made his version of Lucifer famous at the moment. So I was wondering if that informed your version at all?

Gwendoline Christie: I have great respect for Tom, but I didn’t think it would be helpful for me to watch someone else’s performance of a Lucifer role. I played Lucifer actually at Manchester Royal Exchange on stage, maybe 2009 ish. I can’t quite remember. So-

In what?

In Dorchester. And I actually was propelled out of the ceiling in chain mail, colored gray with my hands on fire. So it was a role I really wanted to revisit. And I’m very lucky in that. I had an amazing training at Drama Centre London, which was a classical training with a method approach. And we were always told to look at a wide range of material. It can be the strangest thing that comes to you and says, “That is Lucifer. That essence, that look, the feeling of the sun here on my face, scorching feeling, that’s Lucifer.” So I looked in other areas just because I wanted to make this my own like I do every single part I play.

So, which specific areas did you look at for the part?

Gwendoline Christie: Well, I looked at the comics and I read them again and again and again. And I looked at Neil’s other works and thought about his soul and what it is he tries to communicate and what it is he wants to communicate and what it was he wants to communicate with Lucifer. And I also thought it was very clear to me with our world events and the number of global crisis that we seem to be increasingly aware of. Just what evil means to me and how it manifests in the human body.

Where does it take us? Where does it take our psyche? Where does it take our emotions? And as maybe alien as some of that luckily felt, I was fascinated by exploring it. That’s what I’m interested in. Things where I don’t feel safe.

Where it feels like a challenge for me, maybe the behavior of the character feels entirely alien to me. Maybe it’s something I don’t naturally do. And so it’s a pleasure to work continuously on trying to bring something about that isn’t natural to me.

Is your version of Lucifer wholly evil in your mind?

Gwendoline Christie: I never ever think any character is evil. I never think any character is good. I just think of them as… Well, Lucifer isn’t human. Lucifer is fallen angel, but I think of them as entities.

I haven’t seen the episodes myself, but a little birdie told me you have an episode that’s pretty much just all about your character. And is there anything in that episode that it really struck you and you were super excited? You want people to see it, or-

Gwendoline Christie: Yes, absolutely. I mean, what was thrilling? What’s thrilling about playing any characters when they go through a change, when they are challenged, when the stakes are incredibly high and there is a huge risk. And I was excited to work with Tom, particularly when I got onto set and realized that he was Dream, that he was so committed to the role that he was immersed in that experience. And so that was a great pleasure and fun to come to people that would be very serious, to come about and try that out. And I loved him as well. I loved Tom. He was so generous and so respectful and you need that basis. We all need that basis in order to try things out creatively, in order to go there, particularly when you are not dealing with the nice emotions

In Sandman, that Lucifer’s role as the Monarch of Hell is sort of that classical take that it’s a punishment for Lucifer. What did that feel like? And when you’re playing against Dream, is there jealousy? Is Lucifer jealous of dream? Is that why there’s that level of resentment of what Dream is versus Lucifer?

Gwendoline Christie: I think that Lucifer is simultaneously laissez-faire about every single person, every single creature, every single entity, and simultaneously is consumed with jealousy and shame. Consumed with it. Because from going from being God’s chosen one, God’s favorite angel to live a life entirely of punishment. You have very little.

Yeah. And how did you react when you found out they changed up the script so that Lucifer was the one that got to do the imagination battle of Dream rather than-

Gwendoline Christie: Very, very exciting. And can I just say they have done a phenomenal job with it. They’ve done a phenomenal job of making that come to life. And I loved playing the relationship with Tom. The relationship between the two of them. There was also a lighting state that Jamie Charles, the director, used which felt… It seemed to put us into a hallucinogenic state, which was exciting.

I was wondering, as a lot of people thought this was unfilmable, what sort of notes did you get from Netflix? Were there things that were off limits or things that they were worried about?

Neil Gaiman: It was unfilmable, but it was unfilmable because everybody tried to take the 3,000 pages of Sandman and make a two hour film of it and that’s why it was unfilmable. You never wound up with anything that was satisfying, interesting or worked. There was just too much. It was like trying to put the ocean into a glass.

What we did, as Allan and David Goya and I planned to do Sandman, [we] did an event at Warner Brothers where we explained what we were going to do, which would be Sandman, to a bunch of different streamers. A week later, after frenzied bidding, Netflix had won it and then we did Sandman. So it wasn’t like they were like, “Aha. Now we have won the Sandman. We would like you to do this, this and this and this. It was like, no, they bid for the Sandman that we were going to be making.

And then they just left you to it?

Neil Gaiman: They were really helpful. They were really great. Just as Warner Brothers TV were really helpful and really great. Certainly, we were making this during the height of the pandemic.

We shot episode three in a London in full lockdown, in which the only people allowed out were movie crews for some reason, because we were deemed essential. So in episode three, there are, if you look carefully at the screen, there are no cars moving in the background. There are no tiny distant extras or anything.

Yeah. I think I’ve heard about that when it was happening and it was that really dead zone.

Neil Gaiman: Absolutely. It was completely a dead zone. So everybody, we worked so closely with Netflix and with Warner’s to get this thing made, but they weren’t ever trying to turn it into anything else. I don’t ever recall a time where they said, “Hey, we think that, wouldn’t it be good if Death did this or Dream said that.” That stuff just didn’t happen.

Well, given that you weren’t really asked to make that many changes, there are still a relatively large amount of structure changes and things like that. The biggest thing that stuck out to me when I was watching was introducing Matthew earlier, so that he’s on that journey with Dream while he’s on that first quest. Why was he brought in at that point? Is it because he needed someone to kind of-

Neil Gaiman: Episode four of Sandman in the comic is narrated by Dream. You are inside his head. He is your narrator. And it’s a first person, “I’m going to Hell. I’m scared. All of this stuff is happening.” Matthew was created to give Dream somebody to talk to. He was created to allow conversation to happen. He was created so that he could stand in for the audience And go, “Who is this?”

We talked early on, “Are we going to do narration? Are we going to be in Dream’s head?” And stuff. And we wound up being in Dream’s head just a little bit for episode one. But after that it was like, “If we’re not going to do that, then why don’t we move Matthew’s arrival up earlier?” And Matthew is there, basically, for a little bit in episode three, in episode four. Episode five is sort of not really Matthew and there’s no Matthew in episode six. So then at the beginning of the Doll’s House, he’s there, but also now he’s been introduced and set up.

In a way that he wouldn’t have been in the first episode.

Yeah. It was just one of the changes that stuck out to me as interesting.

Allan Heinberg: It also played nicely because we had introduced Jessamy into the first episode.

And watching Dream deal with grief… There are new ways to get to know Morpheus without him telling you this is what I’m doing.

Those two animal deaths in the first two episodes were shocking, hard-hitting in a way that really made Morpheus feel very softer to me that he feels when you start reading the book. I guess why that choice as well? Like why soften him-

Allan Heinberg: You just said it. Here’s a character who in the book is wrapped in mystery and because our strategy for the show, making this Morpheus’s story, we wanted the audience to fall in love with him and really identify his struggle and identify with his struggle and make him more relatable.

So those were very emotional ways to get to know him. A character who seems shut down and removed, but who really is feeling so much that if you let any of that out, there would be chaos.

I have not seen the screeners, so I’m behind everybody else. What I did see is Good Omens, your translation to that, was amazing. And I love that show. So I’m anticipating loving this one just as much, but you guys were hitting on some of the changes that you’ve made. Is there anything in particular that translated better on television than it did on the page that you were really excited about exploring?

Neil Gaiman: I love the shape of the serial killers’ convention stuff done as television, because I didn’t have that number of pages to tell my story in the Doll’s House. And what I love is that I feel like the serial killers’ convention and Rose’s story and the whole of a Doll’s House has a lot more… You get to set things up in ways that I just didn’t have the room to set things up in the story. I love the fact that little Jed, her brother, is all the way through the story, but points where, in the comic I actually went, “I want to bring him into this.” And then went, “I can’t, I don’t have the room with everything I need to do. And I’m already at 36 pages on this episode.”

So he was locked in the trunk of the car for the episode, for the issue in the comics, because I couldn’t do anything with him, but we had more room and we have more space. So now we can bring him in and he’s somebody else for the audience to care about. And you watch him in the Corinthian bonding and it allows you to go, “Okay, well, really the Corinthian, on the one hand, he is a murderous spirit of serial killing who is eating people’s eyeballs. And on the other hand, he is what he is and he just wants to survive and he’s not actually evil. This is what he was made to be.”

I mean, some of the characters then, because translating that from the screen, for example, Matthew, the Crow, Fiddler’s Green, how do you decide prosthetics, CGI, practical?

Allan Heinberg: Well, Matthew was a real raven and Jessamy was a real crow, a pied crow for as much as we could use. All that was shot practically with real birds. Then the CGI was all modeled on those real birds and hopefully you can’t tell which is which. So that was really important to us that we tried to do everything as practically as possible. And then the VFX, CGI stuff is last resort.

Neil Gaiman: I would say that Jessamy is probably 80% real pied crow, 15% puppet and 5% CGI, something like that. But the CGI is mainly there just to tie moments together and to get the bird in and out of shot. One of the things though that I think is so important about Sandman was making things happen practically. It’s like when Morpheus is with Gregory, he isn’t acting with a tennis ball on a stick. He is acting with a puppeteer, holding a Gregory head of the right size and the puppeteer is acting and the head is being active.

Allan Heinberg: We were crying on set. And it’s a puppet, it’s a puppet head and we’re crying because the scene is so… But Neil’s right, if that hadn’t made us cry, there’s no way that…

Neil Gaiman: I love that it made you cry, but it made you cry because it made us cry because we care.

  • What was it like to direct Sir Patrick Stewart, who had already formed the character of Admiral Patrick Picard in TNG and the films?
  •

He had clear ideas on where Picard was in his life but was still collaborative and open to a dialogue. He thought deeply about the character and every line he said in the script. And he’s just an incredibly kind person.

    1. The first two episodes of Star Trek: Picard established a new Federation that was formed after Star Trek: Nemesis. How did you create this new darker version of the Federation?

That’s more for the writers, but I’ll speak on the visual side. Picard was no longer welcome at Starfleet and didn’t fit anymore, so I wanted to show that visually by contrasting the worlds. I wanted Starfleet to feel powerful but stark by using a cooler color palette and glass and steel that contrasted with the warmer colors and textures I used for Picard’s home.

    1. While there have been Romulans throughout all of Star Trek, they have been kept mysterious for the most part. We only get glimpses of their language, technology, and culture. In Star Trek: Picard, we start to learn more about them since Jean Luc Picard lives with two of them. How did you take into account fully forming this alien species when you were directing the actor playing Romulans?

The actors and I learned as much as we could about Romulans, which included having Michael Chaban, the showrunner, write bios on the characters. That backstory and history were invaluable for giving them an inner life. We had some rehearsal time to talk through things, try things, and make decisions like, should Orla use her Irish accent? If so, what does that mean? And we played around with their relationship to Picard, which was informed by their history. We approached it like you would any character, making sure there’s lots of richness and complexities.

    1. How did you select beautiful locations like the Picard winery in the first two episodes?

One of the first things I said in my initial interview (which I had before I was allowed to read the script), is that I felt Picard would be living on his vineyard and that I wanted to shoot in a vineyard that genuinely felt like a vineyard in France. The location they used in TNG must have been convenient for shooting, but truly looks like a house in Encino. Shooting in France was quickly struck down, but we were considering Napa Valley. Then the locations team showed us photos of the Sunstone Winery, and I was struck by how it looked and felt like wineries I’d visited in France. Our first visit, I was in love with the place. The owners built it with authentic French materials flown in from France. It had the right scale of grandeur and comfy home. And it had that beautiful warm color stone which fit with the color palette I wanted for Picard.

    1. Do you have a favorite scene in the episodes you directed?

I honestly don’t think I can answer that! There were so many! Can I give you my top 5? The Ten Forward scene, Dahj’s fight in the apartment, Picard’s interview with Richter, the first time Picard meets Rios, our introduction to Raffi at her trailer. And a 6th, when he says engage. I also loved it when he visits the archive to find the painting. See, I told you I couldn’t answer that.

    1. Do you plan to direct more episodes of Star Trek: Picard and Discovery?

    I sure hope so!

    1. What do you think are the themes of Star Trek: Picard?

Family and what makes a family, identity, finding your purpose, acceptance of others and the courage to question authority

    1. Star Trek: Picard is the first Star Trek show to operate mostly outside of Starfleet, and we see more of civilian life in the Federation. Was that freeing or hard for you since you are also a Star Trek fan?

I think it’s freeing and also makes it more interesting for me as a fan to explore areas that haven’t been frequently explored already.

    1. What is your favorite Star Trek series?

    The Next Generation!

    1. Who is your favorite Star Trek character?

I have to say 3 — Picard, Riker, and Data with Worf following very closely behind.

The cast of the new ABC series Stumptown were in fine form at San Diego Comic Con this year. The Stumptown gang, creator Greg Rucka, exec producer David Bernad, and cast Cobie Smulders, Camryn Manheim, Michael Ealy, Jake Johnson, Cole Sibus, Tantoo Cardinal and Adrian Martinez were on hand to talk about life, love, family, war, PTSD, sexual fluidity, special needs, keeping secrets and “what’s in a name.”

Stumptown refers to the nickname for Portland, Oregon where the show is set. Cobie Smulders plays an army veteran, Dex, who becomes a private investigator in “Stumptown,” much to the consternation of the local police department (Camryn Manheim and Michael Ealy). Jake Johnson plays Grey, a local bartender and friend to Dex and her brother, Ansel (played by Cole Sibus). Tantoo Cardinal is the tough as nails owner/manager of the casino on the local Native American reservation. Adrian Martinez plays the mysterious, Tookie, and that’s about all I know — I was kind of afraid to ask more (he may have had to kill me).

Check out our round table interviews with this lively and fun cast.

Executive Producer, David Bernad and series star, Cobie Smulders (Dex Parios).

Camryn Manheim stars as Lt. Bobby Cosgrove and Michael Ealy is Detective Miles Hoffman (who also has some steamy scenes with P.I. Dex).

Jake Johnson (Grey McConnell) and Cole Sibus (Ansel Parios) talk about winning Academy Awards, representing people with special needs, how they each got into acting, and all around fun on the set.

Comic book and series creator of Stumptown, Greg Rucka, is with show co-stars Adrian Martinez and Tantoo Cardinal. Rucka talks about bringing his comic book characters to life onscreen.

Stumptown premieres this fall on ABC.

The cast and showrunner of The 100 joined us in the press room at WonderCon 2019 to discuss the upcoming sixth season. Check out the full interviews below!

Eliza Taylor (“Clarke”) says we’ll see a completely different side of Clarke this season; one that’s been one of the most difficult for her to play in her twenty plus year career as an actor. It’s given her a chance to expand her skillset and explore a side of Clarke she didn’t know existed. ***SPOILERS: Eliza’s interview includes 6×1 spoilers****

    Eliza Taylor (“Clarke”)

Richard Harmon (“Murphy”) says this season is a season of growth for all the characters. Sachin Sahel (“Jackson”) says they’re in a new place they’re unprepared for, and people having to deal with things they’ve never dealt with before.

Richard Harmon (“Murphy”) & Sachin Sahel (“Jackson”)

Jason Rothenberg (EP/Showrunner) says he was partially inspired for season six by the story of the Roanoke colony; he says one of his favorite things to do is create these new worlds.

    Jason Rothenberg (EP/Showrunner)

JR Bourne (“Russell”) says he loves Russell; fans can expect to see a layered, and charismatic character.

Shannon Kook (“Jordan”) & JR Bourne (“Russell”)

Marie Avgeropoulos (“Octavia”) says she thinks fans will get to see Octavia be the emotional she’s ever been in season six. She thinks Octavia hit rock bottom in season five, so she thinks things can only go up for her this season.

    Marie Avgeropoulos (“Octavia”)

Tasya Teles (“Echo”) says that over the years Echo has become less reactive; everyone says she tried to kill Octavia… she actually tried NOT to kill Octavia. She’s a lot more observant now. Tasya says she would like to teach Echo to loosen up more, and to be able to become more comfortable with the group and get past some of her abandonment issues.

The post Interview with James Marsters on Dudes & Dragons appeared first on Six Degrees of Geek.

    ]]>
Dudes & Dragons is what is best described as a “quirky” film James Marsters said when I talked to him about the movie, which is being released on VOD/Digital/DVD today, March 1st. Having had a chance to watch the film, I found myself surprised at how much I ended up enjoying it. Marsters talks a little about how when he first read the script, he wasn’t sure what to think the first few minutes, but ended up loving how it all comes together in the end. I found myself feeling the same way while watching it; confusion about where the film was going and, eventually, being really pleased with where it went.

I talked to Marsters recently about the film, as well as some other things going on in his career. He was a super nice guy and after we finished laughing about our mutual dislike of Brazilian nuts we got into talking about Dudes & Dragons and other juicy topics.

To start, are you excited about the film being released next week?

JM: I’m very excited about it. I’ve watched it with an audience twice now and the laughs are pretty much constant the whole way through the film. I’ve been talking with press about the film for the last two days now and most of them have seen the film, and everyone agrees it’s a really fun ride. I think it’s something we would call quirky because it’s not done all the time. I think Buffy was also called quirky in the beginning, before it sort of paved the way for a lot of female heroine stories that come out now.

Any favorite scenes from the movie?

JM: My favorite part of the film is when Maclain (“Camelon”) has had a fake British accent the whole time, and he finally admits that he put that on because he feels like it works. He’s not estranged from his brother anymore and he can just admit he’s been doing this fake accent. There’s something both funny and vulnerable and very dear about that, and it gets all wrapped together in one moment. I think that’s genius.

How did you get involved in the project?

JM: They just sent me the script and I fell in love with it and wanted to give it a try. I thought, if we can get this script off the ground it’s going to work. I was intrigued because it was a very ambitious script being done by an independent producer.

    Screen-Shot-2016-02-24-at-10.46.04-PM

What was your favorite thing about your character, Lord Tensley?

JM: When I read Lord Tensley, he seemed to be really despicable, powerful and dangerous, but also really vulnerable and pathetic and, in a way, endearing. It was like there was a frightened child beneath everything. Basically, he’s a character that has trained a dragon to light on fire anyone that falls in love, and that’s about as messed up as it gets! But, that’s because he’s had his heart broken and he’s still hurting. There’s something relatable about that, because I’ve also had my heart broken and that changes you. So, I thought if you can get all those qualities together it’ll be an interesting character.

What draws you to the sci-fi/fantasy genre?

JM: I was drawn to it as a fanboy early on! I grew up watching re-runs of the original Twilight Zone and then Star Trek. Then there was Star Wars and the Planet of the Apes films. I’ve been interested in the genre all my life. In high school I became a punk rocker, then after college I became a subversive theater artist. I find that science fiction and fantasy can be subversive in a way that realistic drama can’t really get away with. We can say things that are true, but we have that deniability because we can say “oh, this is just a vampire show, we’re not really talking about social issues here.” For example, Star Trek was really talking about the strength of diversity, that diversity makes a society strong and tolerance of the differences of people. Buffy was talking about the fact that women can defend themselves and be heroes. That made people uncomfortable. It still does. I just think the genre is cool and fun to watch.

    spikeheader

And you’re a musician as well, right? How is it juggling being an actor and a musician at the same time?

JM: You drink a lot of coffee! If you surround yourself with people that are really good, you don’t have to do everything. I’m very lucky to be in a band with phenomenal musicians and songwriters. We all agree before we start where a song should go, and that’s a golden place to be. We’re on iTunes! People can go check us out anytime. The band is Ghost of the Robot, 99 cents a song.

    ContentImage-9644-166800-james

Were you happy with how everything turned out in Dudes & Dragons when you saw the final cut?

JM: I was very happy with how it all came out, kind of stunned by how well they were able to pull off the visuals and really impressed by the acting. In this film, everybody brings it and everyone is well cast. Everything comes together.

Do are there any conventions you’ll be at soon, in case your fans want to come meet you?

JM: Definitely! The next one is in Lexington in March, and then there’s one in Paris I’ll be going to, as well. People can check out my official Facebook for my full schedule. I love meeting and talking to my fans.

Season 2 of the NBC’s supernatural show, Midnight Texas, starts tonight and it looks like it starts with a bang. Last season ended with a lot of couples taking the next step in their relationships (losing virginity to tap into witch powers, sharing vampire blood in order to live, marriage, etc.) — all after ridding the town of some nasty vamps and heavy duty demons, of course. Then just as the town is settling into their new blissful, coupled-up state, some mysterious new folks arrive and announce they are moving into town. This can’t be good.

So take a moment to reacquaint yourself with the characters of the town of Midnight and meet some of the new ones. Then check out our interviews with the cast and producers while at New York Comic Con earlier this month.

Francois Arnaud (Manfred) talks about the return of Xylda (played by Joanne Camp) and dark times ahead for Manfred.

Francois Arnaud talks about how the first half of the season introduces the new characters, Kai (played by Nestor Carbonell) and Patience (played by Jaime Ray Newman) and how everyone reacts to what the new Midnight-ers are offering. The second half of the season explores new realms of the supernatural while staying in the Midnight universe.

Parisa Fitz-Henley and Dylan Bruce talk about how losing Fuji’s virginity has affected the lovebirds, Fuji and Bobo.

Parisa Fitz-Henley and Dylan Bruce talk about the premiere episode, dark scenes and sweet scenes. There is also a comprehensive discussion of Google cock-blocking (yep, you read it right).

Arielle Kebbel and Peter Mensah talk about interior decorating for a vampire husband and the pros and cons of having a husband who can sense your every need.

Arielle Kebbel and Peter Mensah talk about the difficulties a vampire living amongst humans as well as marrying one. The duo promise a rollercoaster of emotion in this next season.

Midnight, Texas airs on NBC Fridays at 9/8c.

It’s Manifest Monday and for every question answered, we find another mystery. At New York Comic Con this weekend, we asked executive producer Jeff Rake, and series stars, Josh Dallas and Melissa Roxburgh, what is in store for our intrepid survivors of Montego Airways Flight 828 and here is what they had to say…

Josh Dallas (Ben) talks about how he approaches portraying the character of Ben and Ben’s search for the truth about what happened to him and the other passengers on Flight 828. He also touches on the emotional entanglements of returning home to a wife and daughter who have lived without him for 5-1/2 years.

Melissa Roxburgh (Michaela) talks about the complications in the two key relationships in Michaela’s life — her brother Ben and her ex-fiance Jared. She also talks about the audition process and working with co-star, Josh Dallas.

At NYCC, EP Jeff Rake talks about the impact of the voices and visions on our intrepid siblings, Ben and Michaela, and their key relationships in their lives.

Manfest airs Mondays at 10pm est on NBC. You can also find it on the NBC website / app, iTunes and Amazon.

What happens when you take “Big Thinkers” like Andy Weir (bestselling author of “The Martian”), Susan Wise Bauer (historian, colonization expert and author of the History of the World series) and astronaut Leland Melvin, and add them to an impressive group of creatives and actors to make a science-based television series? You get the thought-provoking NatGeo series MARS. Ready to launch into it’s second season on Nov 12, we met with these visionaries and specialists to talk about how the series incorporates science fact and hypothesis with fictional dramatization, how each of them adds their perspectives and the possibilities of human kind’s actual colonization of the red planet.

As we look to the planets for our future existence, it’s sobering to keep in mind the comment from Melvin, “Earth is not fragile, we are fragile”.

The cast and producers of The Purge mini-series talk about the challenge during San Diego Comic-Con.

The post SDCC 2018: The Purge Mini-Series Press Coverage appeared first on Six Degrees of Geek.

    ]]>
It’s not unusual when a popular movie franchise is turned into a TV show. It is, though, when a TV mini-series based on the latest movie will premiere just two months later.

The USA Network will present a ten-hour miniseries based on The Purge this fall. It will show several characters trying to survive the annual Purge, where all of America is allowed to commit crime, including murder, for 12 hours. During this series, the event is part of society because it’s in the Constitution. Several people will be featured, showing whether they want to participate in the Purge or fight it.

Some of the cast, and the producers, met with the press during San Diego Comic-Con. Brad Fuller, who co-produced The Purge: Anarchy, appeared with Lex Scott Davis, who played Nya in The First Purge.
Fuller says that when the Purge is part of life in this series, people have to make a choice. “There are good people in the TV show,” he says, “who find themselves tantalized by the Purge and how they can help their life, and you get to see the toll that it takes on their lives.”
Davis reprises her role as Nya, an activist who is against the Purge but has to be part of it to save who she can.

Fiona Dourif, who played a “holistic assassin” on Dirk Gently for two seasons, is a cult leader in this series. She said it was a different role, and an intriguing one. “Imagine being so convinced of something,” she says, “that you are willing to die for it. It’s just the most alive you can be, right? She’s so driven and brave. It’s actually one of my favorite characters I’ve ever played.”

In the show, people use the Purge in different ways. Amanda Warren plays Jan, a hard-working employee at a financial firm who finds her path of advancement is limited. “Her only way to remedy that is she’s a woman who’s taken advantage of her opportunities fair and square,” she says, ” and the Purge is an opportunity.” Jan will deal with a lot of moral conflict in using the Purge to advance.

Showrunner Tom Kelly and director Anthony Hemingway (who will helm the first episode) say the Purge movie series will do well on TV. This story, for example, takes place ten years after The First Purge. “Ten episodes take place over one night like the movies do,” he said, “but through the use of flashbacks we really get to break out of the night and we get to see what has influenced our characters in the past and then inform the decisions they make or don’t make in the Purge.”

Finally, Gabriel Chavarria talks about his character, Miguel, who is very worried about his sister after getting a strange letter from her. Miguel is also a Marine, and uses those skills to survive the night. He admits he’s a fan of the movies and thinks they’d work well on TV. “Every episode feels like a movie,” he said, “so you get a lot more out of it. They created great characters, characters that I feel like the audience and the fans will get really mostly invested in…and it’s crazy. It’s exciting, that’s for sure.”

The Purge mini-series starts on Tuesday, September 4th at 10 PM Eastern/Pacific on USA Network. The first and last episodes will be simulcast on SyFy.

Friday at San Diego Comic Con we joined the producers and cast of Fear The Walking Dead for a press conference to talk about where the show has gone this season, and where it’s going. Here were some of our top moments and takeaways from the press conference!

    1. There are many themes for the group to explore going forward, such as who they are within themselves and within the group; who are they to each other and how will they carry on Madison’s legacy will be touched on as well.
    2. Alycia Debnam-Carey (“Alicia”) says Alicia went from being “a regular teenage girl, to a fearless warrior in the apocalypse.” Without ties to her mother or brother, we’ll see Alicia purely as her own character; as a woman now.
    3. Producers said you never know who might pop up on FearTWD, whether that be TWD crossovers, or past characters from FearTWD itself.
    4. We will be seeing more of Al’s tapes and why they mean so much to her, what’s on them, and more over the course of a couple episodes.
    5. It devastated the cast to lose Nick and Madison in 4A. Colman says it’s a balancing act of grace, patience and being honest about your feelings so that you can tell a good story.
    6. The producers joked we could one day see frozen zombies; but other TWD universe projects are currently being worked on.

Below is the full audio clip of the press conference!

Fear The Walking Dead returns on August 12.

Tyrone and Tandy, two people united by a mysterious accident that gave them strange powers, drawn to each other but reluctant to come together.
That’s the premise behind Cloak and Dagger, Marvel’s first show for Freeform that has been a big hit for the channel. While the heroic pair may be trying to get to the bottom of how Roxxon is involved in the death of Tandy’s dad and how Tyrone’s brother died, they may be facing bigger problems when season two starts next year.

Aubrey Joseph and Olivia Holt talked about the relationship their characters have. He says trust is important, and that it’s good Tyrone thinks a cop is on his side. She says it’s a good idea Tyrone and Tandy start out as friends before it might become something more. However, Tandy’s ex-boyfriend will be back, while Evita is worried about what will happen to both of them.

Showrunner and creator Joe Pokaski reveals how they deal with issues like police brutality, environmentalism and domestic abuse on the show. He also reveals someone on the show will undergo a major change next year.

Ally Maki, who plays Roxxon engineer Mina Hess, explains how she got help from one of the writers to build her character, and how Mina has already inspired some fans. Ally also talks about how the fact Mina’s dad, who’s been in a catatonic state after the Roxxon accident, will affect the story now that he’s awake.

Finally Emma Lahana, who plays Officer Brigid O’Reilly, talks about the detective’s relationship with Tyrone, her connection with Luke Cage, and how things will change for her…literally…next year.

Cloak and Dagger airs every Thursday at 8 PM Eastern and Pacific, with the season finale on August third.

If you watch SYFY’s The Magicians, then you know we ended season 2 with our Fillory focused friends in quite the doozy of a predicament. Clearly season 3 will need to address topics like newly acquired amnesia, solitary confinement, a Dean’s betrayal and the monster in the room (literally). In fact, the monster was one of the main points of discussion when we sat down with the cast and creators of the show at this year’s Comic Con. Although they couldn’t give much away (obviously – we have to wait and see!) we did learn that things won’t necessarily be resolved in the first few episodes, that there will be physical manifestations of said amnesia, and most importantly that we’ll get another musical episode. This all makes it very hard to be patient and wait for 2019 for season 4 to air!

Until then, check out our videos from the press room and maybe give the series another rewatch in the meantime. I plan to!

Back in 1980, George R.R. Martin of “Game of Thrones” fame wrote a novella called “Nightflyers”. Now SYFY is releasing a new television series based on the novella (and it’s expansion in 1981) and from the trailer shown to the panel audience at this year’s SDCC, it will be every bit as gripping as the original work. After sitting down with the creators and cast, we learned that the first season (10 episodes) will stay pretty much to the published story, but the producers already have big plans for how they’ll carry the series forward in future seasons. Equal parts horror and science fiction, we can expect homage to some of both genres’ most popular cinematic predecessors!

Watch the videos below and be ready to tune into SYFY for the series premiere as soon as it’s announced!

Thursday at SDCC 2018 brought fans of upcoming series A Discovery of Witches plenty of content to enjoy while they wait for the US premiere. The show will be streamed by Sundance Now and Shudder, and is based on Deborah Harkness’ best-selling novel. Going into the panel not having read the series, I was pleasantly surprised and excited by what I saw. Teresa Palmer plays brilliant historian Diana Bishop, in a forbidden romance with vampire Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Good).

Author Deborah Harkness herself joined the cast and Executive Producer Lachlan MacKinnon in the SDCC press room to give us more details about their characters and what to expect from the new series! My thought is this a must watch show! It checks all the boxes for me: witches, vampires, and LGBT representation – what more can you ask for? The cast was very passionate about the series, and author Deborah Harkness also seemed very happy with where the story is being taken. Watch our videos below for all the scoop.

Shohreh Aghdashloo attends The Expanse press room at Comic Con 2017 on July 22 in San Diego Convention Center, California

If you’re a fan of The Expanse, then you already know that Season 3 of the seriously engaging science fiction drama begins on April 11 on SYFY. If you don’t know why that’s such wonderful news, then get thee swiftly to SYFY, Amazon Video, YouTube, iTunes, Vudu or Google Play to get up to speed with Seasons 1 and 2! It also can’t hurt for you to dive into the eponymous series of novels, short stories and novellas the show is based on, by author James S.A. Corey (aka writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck).

Boasting an impressive and diverse ensemble cast (Steven Strait, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, Chad L. Coleman and Terry Chen among others), one character in particular seems to take viewers by surprise: UN Deputy Undersecretary Chrisjen Avasarala. Taken first with her quick, dry wit and the language of a sailor, what tends to follow is a deep appreciation and fondness for her, as she fiercely defends Earth’s place in the solar system while building alliances to stave off escalating threats to humanity from within and without. Played with sublime finesse by the deservedly multi-awarded Shohreh Aghdashloo, Avasarala has easily been elevated to a fan favorite, not least because Shohreh has endeared the role to herself with her passionate delivery and that unmistakably sumptuous whisky brushed voice.

Are you one of the legions of fans who have fallen under Shohreh’s genuine charms and want to know more about her? Then I invite you to check out our interview with her at last year’s San Diego Comic Con. She was so gracious to make time for us in her whirlwind afternoon of press and panels, but if you know Shohreh, you know that’s just the kind of person she is – generous, kind, caring and funny (to say the least). It’s hard to believe you can love her even more, but come on, who hasn’t been there with fast food hamburgers?!

The Expanse returns to SYFY for Season 3 on Wed, April 11, 2018 at 9/8c.

Whedonopolis (W): When are you the happiest?

Shohreh Aghdashloo (SA): When I see people smiling; the sky is clear; there is no war; there are no refugees; there are no barriers; we have broken down the ghettos and we are all living peacefully next to one another. It is only then and there that I would be truly happy from the bottom of my heart. Otherwise, I cannot laugh fully or be happy 100% when I see there are still people who need help and we’re not sharing.

W: What is your greatest fear?

SA: What is my greatest fear..? My daughter. Her future. I hope that she’s going to be as successful as she wants to be. I hope she’s going to be as useful as she has to be. And I hope that she’s going to live a healthy, happy life. That’s my ultimate wish in this world. My other wishes, dreams, have come true. I asked my mother once, “When am I going to be fully, 100% sure that my daughter is going to be fine?” and my mother said, “Never! Until you die.” Being who she is – I call her Mother Courage, so you can imagine – she’s right. She’s right! That is something that you can never, never forget.

W: Most mothers would feel the same way, right?

SA: They do. Mothers are mothers. Children really are like parts of our body. Like my daughter, every time she catches a cold, I call her and say, “Are you okay?” and she says “Mom, how do you know that I’m not feeling well?” I say, “No wonder why my arm was in pain. It is, absolutely – the connection is there. The physical connection, the mental connection, you know, the universal connection. It’s all there. It’s just for us to feel it.

W: What is your earliest memory?

SA: My earliest memory would be my grandmother in pastel colors, with her curly blond hair, out in the backyard, laying out the trays of sweets and tea, and it’s right before dusk. We’re expecting grandpa to come and tell us stories about the Second World War. Since I was 5 years old, I can clearly remember because all the stories were so elaborate; my grandpa would elaborate on the stories and that’s why I still remember some of those stories about the Second World War. I’m wondering if they were true? (laughs) But he did such a great job – he was a great storyteller.

W: If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would it be?

SA: My father. I wish I could bring him back to life. I wish I could have (him) for even 48 hours. Just give me 48 hours with him again so I could just sit there and watch him and be proud of being his daughter. I hope he’s proud of me.

W: Who would play you in the film of your life (assuming you couldn’t do it)?

SA: If I couldn’t play my (own) life, who would do it… Well, there are so many amazing Iranian actresses, but in this case it doesn’t have to be Iranian, she doesn’t have to be Iranian. She could be South American, Israeli. What I keep saying is the fact that with all these advanced technological gadgets, us living next to each other, breathing diversity, there should be no problem in telling our stories together regardless of our background and the color of our skin or our accents. I’m just hoping that a wonderful actress will portray my life! (laughs)

W: What did you want to be when you were growing up?

SA: Since childhood, I’ve wanted to be an actor. And I’ll tell you why: (when) I was 7 or 8 years old I started looking at the members of the family, finding out how they behaved, and then in our family parties, I would mock each and every one of them. And I did such a great job it made my uncle call my mother and (ask her) to “Tell Shohreh not to do me in the future”. (laughs) I did such a great job! I always wanted to be an actor. Always. But what made me believe that I was going to do this was Gone with the Wind. I was 16 years old and we went to the Caspian Sea. My uncle lived there, and he had 6 daughters, just like Pride and Prejudice. [He had] a huge ranch and it was a very mainland style of living. We all went to see Gone with the Wind, and when we got out I told my mother, “I am going to be an actress”. Any my mother said, “Not under our roof. It’s not going to happen in our house.” But I fought for it. I fought for it.

W: What book changed your life?

SA: My God, what book changed my life? The Stranger by Albert Camus. I’ve read all of Camus’ books. I’m in love with The Stranger and The Trial, but what I love about The Stranger is that because I was very young – I was 14 or 15 years old – I came across this line that any young generation who is not a rebel, is an insult to his own generation. I took that away and it formed my personality. It was customary in Iran to read (Gustave) Flaubert or Camus, and it was a sign of intellectuality. You wanted to read these books and be able to talk about them [at] your parties. Intellectual people would say (tosses head theatrically), “Yes, I read Camus” or “Yes, I know Camus”. That’s why. (laughs)

W: What is your guiltiest pleasure?

SA: What is my guiltiest pleasure? Hamburger. (laughs). I love McDonald’s! (both laugh). I can’t even tell you how much! My daughter says, “One of these days the paparazzi are going to take a picture of you with half a McDonald’s (burger) in your mouth”! I can’t help myself, I love it. And it’s always drive thru. I just get it and I can’t even wait, I start eating it while driving. And as soon as (I) stop at a red light, I have some French fries. I can’t let go of the French fries! (laughs)

W: If you could go back in time, where would you go?

SA: Late 18th century. When the progression starts – when technology starts its progression, when the modern world starts to be, to become.

    W: Thank you so much!!

A Series of Unfortunate Events is coming back for season 2 on Netflix on March 30th, but first Nathan Fillion dropped by WonderCon to tease us about the new season and his character of Jacques Snicket, the less known brother of Lemony Snicket.

You are opposite Neil Patrick Harris again. Is it some sort of fate? How did this happen?

Nathan Fillion: I imagine Neil sitting, drinking his morning coffee thinking “I need someone I can really hate. Who would be the perfect nemesis? …Nathan.” I love working with Neil. [He] does perfect work. I watched the first season of A Series of Unfortunate Events and then I got a text from Neil saying “keep your eyes open, we’re going to send you a little something so maybe you can come join us…” It’s such a beautiful program…it’s like a spooky painting. It’s so gorgeous in its ugliness. It’s written so eloquently and there is so much going on that can entertain. The chance to work with Neil again? And then we slip into roles we’re so comfortable with… playing enemies.

So you watched the first season, was there any story or character you were enraptured by?

Nathan Fillion: It’s such and amazing world and there is so much beauty in it.. that the kids are the smartest guys in the room always got a little frustrating for me, but I can see how it would be satisfying for a younger audience.

The baby is the smartest one in the room

Nathan Fillion: Boom! When you talk about capable actors…That baby is on it.

Can you share any behind the scenes details?

Nathan Fillion: Doing TV is alot of work and is a group effort. You need to hire the right people to do the right jobs and it’s time intensive. When I come to work I know I’m going to work the full day through. There’s going to be alot expected of you, but you’re part of a machine. When I come to work and Neil has already been there for two hours getting stuff glued to his face and he’s going to be there an hour after I leave to get it taken off. And then he’s coming right back the next day… I mean that’s alot of work. He’s signed on to what I would consider torture, but I think..work is his life’s blood. Jacques Snicket is the perfect role for me. Come on in, put a mustache on and then in two weeks I’m done! I come in, I dip my toe in and then I walk away taking the credit. That’s what I do.

I’m going to be honest with you… I think my career is a long line of me riding on other people’s coattails. But my gift is knowing which coattails to ride on.

You’ve done a lot of broadcast television. Is there any difference doing a Netflix show?

Nathan Fillion: The day to day is the same. The kinds of projects are different. I think Netflix takes a lot more risks when it comes to “let’s see if this sticks”. Once your project is out there its accessible at any point in time. If you didn’t tune in on Wednesday, you can still binge watch it on Thursday.

What is the best thing about your character?

Nathan Fillion: I think he has an immutable goodness about him. I think Lemony Snicket is a depressed guy because he’s been through a great deal, but in the timeline Jacques didn’t have to experience all that horribleness. Jacques still has a lot of hope and a lot of drive to do what’s right.

The Krypton cast and showrunner Cameron Welsh stopped by the WonderCon press room on Saturday for a chat about the premiere season of the show and what viewers can expect of DC’s newest TV show!

Cameron Welsh (Showrunner) says he was excited about this project because Krypton is such a rich world, but is still relatively unexplored. He says it’s a privilege to work on anything connected to Superman and they want to stay true to his roots, but also explore some new characters and stories that viewers haven’t seen. After the pilot, the timeline has now changed in Superman canon, so despite this being a prequel, viewers won’t always know what’s coming next.

Georgina Campbell (“Lyta Zod”) teases we will see Lyta struggle throughout the season with who she wants to be and who her mother wants her to be. Being a Zod, there is a lot of pressure on Lyta to conform to certain standards, but she is quite rebellious and wants to change the status quo of Krypton. Georgina says an ongoing theme this season for Lyta will be wanting her mother’s love and approval. There will also be the Romeo/Juliet sense of conflict between the Zod and El families that will be explored with Lyta and Seg-El’s relationship.

Wallis Day (“Nyssa-Vex”) says Nyssa is mysterious and complex, in ways that even she didn’t expect in the beginning. Since Nyssa was never on a comic book page, Wallis had freedom to make changes for the character and explore who she is. Wallis teased we’ll learn what happened to Nyssa to make her who she is now in the show. Nyssa doesn’t fall into the “blind follower” category that her father might want her to, so we will likely see Nyssa challenge him at some point this season.

Below are the full videos from our interviews at Wonder Con!

This year at Wondercon we got the opportunity to talk to the cast and creators of Netflix’s scifi reboot of Lost in Space. This time around we lose the campy-ness and go with a hard core science fiction story with a lot of family drama and action adventure. The Robinson family, in case you forgot, is made up of Maureen Robinson (Molly Parker), John Robinson (Toby Stephens), Judy Robinson (Taylor Russell), Penny Robinson (Mina Sundwall), Will Robinson (Maxwell Jenkins), Don West (Ignacio Serricchio) and of course Dr. Smith (Parker Posey).

Delving into the story as far as possible without giving away any real spoilers, this is what the cast had to say about their characters and the upcoming 10 episode series.

Whedonopolis: When did you guys know that you were making something absolutely extraordinary?

Maxwell Jenkins: It was probably from the beginning of it I knew I was gonna have a great time filming this. I knew it was gonna be cool. We were up filming on a glacier like 10,000 feet up the day before my birthday and I looked out at the valley and the river that led to the ocean. And I thought “Wow I am really lucky to be a part of this.” And that’s the moment I knew we were doing something special.

Mina Sundwall: I think the second that I started to see a little bit of what all of the writers, all of the producers were seeing in their heads. Because we work with so much green screen and so many different, you know, there’s an X here, there’s an X here, and then look, there’s going to be a crash. There’s going to be something that happens that you can imagine it but I could never possibly see what they were seeing. The second that I got to see inside of somebody’s else’s head was what blew me away.

Taylor Russell: Its gigantic, that’s really the word to describe it. And it’s amazing because we had these days where it was, you’re wearing these spacesuit, they’re really, really heavy. And you have no idea what it’s going to look like on a green screen. It kind of all seems like, what is happening right now? And then you see the results of it, and it is like nothing you could have ever pictured. And it is so worth all of the hours of uncomfortableness and any of the trouble that you went through because it’s such a beautiful show, visually and in every aspect. It really blew my mind when I watched it because it’s just CGI and all, everything, it’s incredible.

Toby Stephens: The thing is, when you’re starting a series, you just don’t know what it is until-

Molly Parker: I’m still not sure.

Toby Stephens: It was actually only when I watched the first episode that I went “oh that’s what it is.” I read the script and I kinda went this is kinda cool, I really like the way they jazzed around with … they’re faithful to the original. It really feels much more real. When you’re filming it, there’re these huge green screens everywhere and you just don’t know what’s gonna … they say “there’s a huge spaceship here” and you gotta take their word for it. Yeah, okay.

There were moments where I saw the robot. When we were first working on the Jupiter. You see the beautiful finish that it had. I was just like, this has been a fantasy of mine since I watched the movie Star Wars when I was a kid. Of wanting to be … I mean I love Star Trek, I love Star Wars, I love the Alien movies, I love 2001. I’m a huge sci-fi kind of fan. Suddenly finding yourself in this situation where you’re going “Shit man, I’m in a spaceship, in a space suit, and I’m playing a real person, and this is like … and I’m working with Molly Parker.”

Kevin Burns (EP): You know, John and I have been at this for a long time. I was the kid who watched it as a child. And I was his age when every week … it was the show that was talked about the next day at school. And then, Batman came on and everybody kind of moved away. But I always loved it. Because it was so imaginative, and so visual. As you get older … you revisit it and you go “I wish the sets weren’t so cardboardy, and I’ve seen that alien monster in six other things now.” You want to have a chance to bring it back to the experience you had when you were a kid. And I think that was the idea. When John and I met he was a motion picture executive at 20th century Fox. I was a television executive doing TV movies. We both shared a love for Irwin Allen properties, The Time Tunnel, Land of the Giants and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. But Lost in Space was the jewel in that crown …

Now was the right time to bring it back. Not a sequel but re-envision it. To go back to the original, and say “what was it that everybody loved? Why do people still love it 50 years later?” To make sure we don’t lose that. Make sure the family is a real family and doesn’t have to be all geniuses. And I have to say the greatest achievement, whether it’s out of luck or design, is it’s not cynical. We’re not making a show that they think other people will watch. Their making a show they wanna watch, they want their kids to watch. That’s why you connect to this family.

Whedonopolis: When I watched the classic version I was never really afraid of the robot. But this time I’m really afraid of him.

Maxwell Jenkins: It’s like me and my rescue pit bulls. They have a bad reputation and people give them a bad reputation just by the way they look and the way people make them behave. If you’re nice to them and you’re kind to them, they are loyal to you. They are fierce protectors. They are exactly like the robot. And the robots like the Iron Giant, Black Stallion and ET mixed together.

Kevin Burns (EP): He may have an iron giant dynamic but you do feel… this ticking time bomb because you don’t quite know “Is there an agenda?”. Or will exposure to kindness and family, is it nature vs. nurture? And that is the great tension you feel

Whedonopolis: Could talk a little bit about the dynamics of working with the other actors?

Mina Sundwall: The first unit we ever shot together was the opening scene with the crash. And if that’s not a bonding moment … I think we automatically established this family dynamic between us and Molly. Being on set with Molly, it always feel like she has this [ability to tell] that either you need a hug or you’re tired or you get too rowdy and you need a time out. Being with Taylor is quite literally like the sister I never had. We’ve seen each other at our worst and we’ve seen each other at our happiest. It’s lots of fun. Being with Matt is also the younger brother that I get to pick on the whole time. It just feels like we bounce off each other so well in work and in life that it feels natural.

Whedonopolis: The family dynamic is really what sells your show. I mean, it looks magnificent but if we don’t feel something for these characters, we’re not going to keep watching. I was struck by how quickly the family unit became something I really wanted to be a part of, almost like, oh, wow, that’s my family, I want to be there. So how did you guys cultivate that kind of chemistry?

Taylor Russell: I think the base of what they created was enough for us to run with, and you guys put together a really great cast who, I mean, we all have a lot of chemistry. I think our love for each other really shows in the show, but I do think it is a lot about the writing, as well. And I think it’s a combination of both. I think it’s writing and our relationship. I remember the moment we sat down we were all looking at each other because we’re at this round table, wearing our space suits. This is us, we’re the best. You actually build a love that would be different from anybody else on set because you know you’re supposed to be a unit.

Toby Stephens: When Molly and I were first talking about them as a family and their relationship, you’re like, it has to be real. It has to have a kind of texture of … these are real family, this is a real couple. For anybody to care about what happens to them, do you know what I mean? If people don’t identify-

Molly Parker: I think [Maureen & John Robinson] really loved each other and maybe love each other and there are circumstances that have made their life heartbreakingly possible.

Toby Stephens: What’s nice is that, it’s about people trying to be better. I think we really need that. It’s not mawkish or sentimental, it’s just … it’s about people trying to be better people. I like watching that.

Matt Sazama (writer): I will say there is something that you can’t write for or plan, which is just the alchemy of people together and from the very beginning watching you with everyone else in the family, you guys felt like you actually like each other off screen. It had this connection, which, we just got really lucky..

Burk Sharpless (writer): There’s a particular kind of intense connections you feel when you’re with somebody who you both need to help keep you alive, but who’s also a family member. And everybody is sort of pushed to that limit. There’s a specific sort of place that you go that’s really raw, but really connected and I think that was one of the tonal things that we were trying to create, and it was amazing to see it come together.

Whedonopolis: How do you get into a character like Dr. Smith?

Ignacio Serricchio: [Don and Dr. Smith] are so similar individually, they’re both survivors, they both have to make it through life pretty much on their own.

    Parker Posey: Self-invented

Ignacio Serricchio: When that happens you really look out for yourself. So it comes off as selfish but it’s more about survival. You have no one else to rely on so then you keep people at a distance. You don’t trust everyone, you create a character within a character, let’s say cuz you wanna protect your true identity. You don’t wanna seem vulnerable. And they’re so similar that we can detect very similar traits. So they check in on each other, they keep each other at a distance. They’re not as free with each other as they could be with other people.

Parker Posey: I think it’s complicated. I think people are complicated. The original Dr. Smith was initially a Russian con artist. So this one has that similar kind of makeup. What makes a spy in a con artist? Dr. Smith is very crafty. Someone on the edge is someone who is broken, who finds herself in the Robinson family in this fantasy of a family that she always wanted to be in. So she’s in this fantasy but she also has this other side that she wants to control, she wants to empower. So she’s conflicted.

Saturday at WonderCon 2018, we had a chance to talk to Siren’s cast, as well as showrunner Emily Whitesell and creator Eric Wald. Here’s what we learned!

Alex Roe (“Ben”) says his character kind of explores how the siren songs works and how it makes people act. Alex says one of the big reasons he signed onto the project was he loved the “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” feel to these mermaids. He says basing these mermaids on some type of scientific truth was a fun exploration. If mermaids were to be real, these seem like a more believable concept than past stories. Apparently Alex received some breath training and can actually hold his breath about 4 minutes! Wow! So, viewers may have some underwater exploration to look forward to with Ben!

Eline Powell (“Ryn”) teases that her character will seem odd because she’s a mermaid who has never been on land, so she knows nothing about this world and everything will be new to her. Eline says mermaids are such an interesting mythological creature, and it’s very exciting for her to explore this new take on mermaids. Eline says Ryn’s primary motivation this season is finding her sister Donna, played by Sibongile Mlambo, who is captured in the pilot.

Rena Owen (“Helen”) says her character runs an antiquities shop and is the town believer when it comes to mermaids, so the town has come to view her as the town nut job. She says Helen will come to be redeemed when it’s revealed mermaids aren’t as fictional as the town believed! Rena says everyone in the town will be taken out of their comfort zone once mermaids arrive in town.

Ian Verdun (“Xander”) says Xander works with his father in the town fisheries and it was nice for him as a POC to play a blue collar, working class character, since POC aren’t commonly seen in those roles. He says Xander is trusting to a fault at times, and has a very human, nuanced story we can look forward to. Ian teases that we will see how different people, from different circumstances handle coming into mermaids as the season progresses.

Sibongile Mlambo (“Donna”) teases that Donna is loyal and has a different experience to what Ryn goes through on land. Donna’s story arc throughout the season will focus on her capture that happens in the pilot and her attempts to free herself and get back to her sister, Ryn.

Eric Wald (Creator) says the concept for Siren came out of his love for Jaws, and the aggressive depiction of mermaids he saw in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” Around this darker take on mermaids, they built these characters and the town. Emily Whitesell (Showrunner) felt that although it was a giant mythology, it was also grounded and real concept and the marriage of the two is appealing. Eric says that they tried to fashion their mermaids conceptually after what a potential real mermaid could look like, rather than the traditional half human half fish.

Friday at WonderCon 2018 we got a glimpse into season 5 of The 100 after talking to producer Jason Rothenberg and the men of The 100 about what we can expect!

Jason Rothenberg told us that there will be flashbacks scattered throughout the season of what the groups went through in the missing six years, but season 5 will pick up when the three separate factions are coming back together. Jason says Bellamy will have a hard time adjusting to who his sister, Octavia has become. Octavia has had to do really dark things to keep the group in the bunker together; it will have really effected her soul and damaged her. It seems like “Darktavia” will be a force to be reckoned with!

Richard Harmon teases that after having spent six years in space with six other people, Murphy will have formed strong new bonds and Bellamy is like a best friend to Murphy. He teases that throughout season 5, viewers will find out what spacekru went through in those six years. Richard says there is a “lovely storyline” with Raven that was a lot of fun. Richard says that with such a big time jump, it felt like a brand new slate and there was a lot of things their characters could let go of. He says Murphy can finally in a way let go of the redemption story arc and move on.

Christopher Larkin (“Monty”) says in the vacuum of space you will either love or hate the people you’re stuck with for so long, and we’ll see how the relationships of spacekru have evolved or devolved as the season begins. Christopher says being back in space may have served as a respite for Monty after everything he went through on the ground.

Bob Morley (“Bellamy”) says that Bellamy has believed the past six years that Clarke died when they left her, so viewers may be in for an emotional reunion when he finds out that isn’t the case. He says Bellamy has been motivated to make sure spacekru survives, so Clarke didn’t die in vain. Bob says he believes what has been the hardest for Bellamy is worrying about Octavia and getting back to her. He says that when Bellamy is looking out the window, he believes Bellamy is thinking about Octavia. Bob says the spacekru will be like a new second family to Bellamy after being stuck with them in space for so long, so there will be interesting new dynamics to explore in season 5.

The atmosphere was cozy and chic for the New York City premiere of CBS Films’ American Assassin. The Cinema Society and Saved Wines hosted the special screening at the South Street Seaport’s iPic Theater where stars Dylan O’Brien (Mitch Rapp) and Taylor Kitsch (Ghost) walked the red carpet along with screenwriter, Stephen Schiff, and director, Michael Cuesta.

The event was low-key and intimate as O’Brien and Kitsch talked about taking on the opposing roles of Mitch Rapp and Ghost from the popular action-thriller franchise. American Assassin, an adaptation of the spy thriller series from author Vince Flynn, is the origin story of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a former grad student who suffered a tremendous loss during a terrorist attack and who is now a hardened Black Ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran, Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). Taylor Kitsch plays “Ghost,” a mysterious operative intent on starting a World War and who may have past ties to the CIA and Hurley.

“I felt really strongly about [Mitch Rapp’s] arc and I felt really strongly about… how believable it was, how authentic it felt and just the potential for it to be something really relevant,” O’Brien explains. He also spoke of the impact of the life changing events he has experienced over the last year and a half — from the accident on The Maze Runner: The Death Cure set to realizing a dream of throwing out the first pitch at a game of his beloved New York Mets. “It was a big, long struggling year, to be honest, and I’m really glad to be where I’m at today and feel how good I feel today and I feel pushing through all that… I’ve grown up a bit doing it.”

Kitsch discussed taking on the role of Ghost, “I haven’t played this type of guy in a long time — if ever, you know — at this level. I think that attracted me to it, but also just how personal it was and a different take on a villain, if you will… This guy is American, he grew up, he served his country and is jaded by a traumatic event…”

Screenwriter Stephen Schiff has had his fair share of telling spy stories as a writer and Executive Producer on the FX series “The Americans.” In bringing Mitch Rapp to life for the big screen, he talks about what distinguishes him from the ordinary action star, “I feel you do see a boy turning into a man in this movie – there’s a grad student turning into ‘American Assassin.’”

Michael Cuesta talked about being able to flesh out the training sequence in the movie with the idea of AR or ‘augmented reality’ training. The recruits are put in situational faux set-ups and tasked with finding the bad guy. Cuesta comments, “How did the idea come to me? Just from the ‘Ghost’ idea and also the ‘dress like a deer, kill like a lion’ [idea] – that it could be anyone.”

Star Dylan O’Brien talks about life-changing events, the end of “Teen Wolf” and taking on a new franchise in American Assassin.

Taylor Kitsch talks about playing the villain in American Assassin, torturing Michael Keaton and asks what it takes to be considered a Geek.

We speak with screenwriter, Stephen Schiff, about adapting a popular franchise to the big screen and also about “American Assassin” v. his hit FX series “The Americans.”

Director Michael Cuesta talks about taking on the origin story of Mitch Rapp and fleshing out the characters on the big screen.

American Assassin hits movie theaters on September 14th. Here are some more photos from the event.

There’s a new DC Comics kid on The CW block. Black Lightning joins The CW line-up this fall and it’s a superhero family affair. After spending years fighting crime as the masked superhero Black Lightning, Jefferson Pierce decides to put down the mask and focus on his family. He decides to serve his community as a school principal and watch over his two daughters without using his superpowers. But, almost a decade later, with crime rising and corruptions spreading, his family and community are in danger. His daughters are beginning to realize powers of their own. In order to help his daughters and save his community, Jefferson Pierce must become Black Lightning again.

On hand for the mid-season series’ San Diego Comic Con debut were the cast — Cress Williams (Jefferson Pierce aka Black Lightning), Nafessa Williams (Anissa Pierce aka Thunder), China Anne McClane (Jennifer Pierce), Christine Adams (Lynn Pierce); and executive producers — Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil.

Cress Williams plays Jefferson Pierce, father and school principal by day, superhero Black Lightning by night. He talks about playing a character with two sides, “Jefferson Pierce is like Martin Luther King Jr. and then with Black Lightning you get Malcolm X.” He also talks about the family dynamic of the show and playing an iconic African American superhero on network TV.

Nafessa Williams plays Anissa Pierce, Jefferson Pierce’s oldest daughter. She talks about auditioning for the part, what she likes about the character and playing the sister dynamic on the show.

China Anne McClain plays Jennifer Pierce, youngest daughter of Jefferson Pierce. She talks about her character starting as an average teenage and then discovering and developing her powers.

Executive producers Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil talk about bringing such an iconic Black superhero to television and the importance of portraying the Black family dynamic. Salim Akil states, “They’re the Obamas of superhero families!”

Black Lightning, a mid-season series, is headed to The CW in 2018.

Here’s more from the Comic-Con press room with cast members of NBC’s Midnight Texas, based on books written by Charlaine Harris (True Blood book series)

Jason Lewis and Yul Vazquez appeared together to talk to reporters. Lewis plays Joe, who is an angel, while Vazquez plays Rev, a man who turns into a tiger when the moon is full. Vazquez says he was very impressed with how the CGI experts turn him into a tiger. They were also involved with the movie Life of Pi. He and Lewis say the crew and cast members truly enjoy working together. Here’s the video of the interview.

Here’s a quick interview with Peter Mensah and Arielle Kebbel. They are an interesting couple: a vampire that feeds on energy and an assassin who lives in town for her own reasons
