If you’re looking for a convention that celebrates the creations of Joss Whedon and also help a couple of good causes, WhedonCon 2018 is for you.
WhedonCon has been going strong since 2016, bringing in guests from all over the Whedonverse, which extends from Sunnydale with Buffy and Angel, outer space with Firefly/Serenity, and to unique worlds with Dollhouse. The ‘verse also has part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with The Avengers, the DC-verse with Justice League, and Shakespeare with Much Ado About Nothing. It even includes the story of a villain you can’t help but like (while that task is easier because his super-hero nemesis is so annoying).
This year’s event will be at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills on May 18th, 19th and 20th.
This year’s guest of honor is Sean Maher, who played Simon Tam in Firefly/Serenity, and also the villainous Don John in Much Ado Without Nothing. He’ll have a special Q and A on Sunday May 20.
Other guests include Buffy alumni James Marsters and James Leary, Dagney Kerr, who was Buffy’s first annoying college roommate, Andrew Ferchland, the “Anointed One” in the first two seasons of Buffy, Jonathan Woodward, who’s been in Buffy, Angel and Firefly, Camden Toy, one of the Gentlemen from the classic Buffy episode “Hush”, Gigi Edgley from SyFy’s Farscape, Miracle Laurie, who played November in Dollhouse, artist George Jeanty, who’s best known for his work on the Dark Horse Buffy comics, and movie wardrobe designer Shawna Trpcic, whose work is literally all over the Whedonverse.
There will be panels ranging from fan fiction to cosplay, karaoke to a “Once More With Feeling” singalong, podcasts to an unofficial Dr. Horrible sequel, and a lot more. There’s also a concert by Marsters’ band, Ghost of the Robot.
There’s also lots to buy, with several vendors set to offer their wares to fans and attendees.
Badges and social events are still available, with pre-con discounts. Just click here for all the info you need, from admission, social events to the complete schedule.
Part of the proceeds will go to the Lupus Foundation of America and in memory of Ron Glass, The Al Wooten Jr. Heritage Center.

Ms. Landau is best known for playing the role of Drusilla on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its spinoff, Angel, over the course of six seasons, which earned her a Saturn Award nomination. She co-starred in Ed Wood and starred opposite Whoopie Goldberg in New Line Cinema’s Theodore Rex. She has shown her skill with dialects by lending her voice to various characters on the popular animated series’ Justice League Unlimited and Ben 10, as well as the animated movie Green Lantern: First Flight.
In 2009, Ms. Landau co-wrote, with Brian Lynch, two issues of the Angel comic book series featuring her character, Drusilla, for IDW Publishing. In addition to writing, she contributed numerous ideas and references for both the cover and interior art of the issues.
In July 2013 it was announced that she will voice a new incarnation of the Time Lord, Romana, in the Big Finish Productions audio dramas Gallifrey VI and Luna Romana, spin-offs of the TV series Doctor Who.

On the Saturday before Halloween, fans of Dr. Horrible turned out to the 5th Annual Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and The Guild Charity Screening, presented by Whedonopolis, a project of Fandom Charities Inc. This year’s event took place at the Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood, CA and featured many special guests that included… Jane Espenson, Brad “Cheeks” Bell, Doug Jones, Ben Edlund, Fran Kranz, Shawna Trpcic, Georges Jeanty, Greg Aronowitz, David Burns and Michael Canaan, among others. Newly added to the lineup of screenings were the web series “Husbands” and the Skyrim Parodies. Thanks to the generous support of the attendees and guests, over $2,100 has been donated to Best Friends Animal Society of Los Angeles! We also gathered non-perishable food for the Sova Community Food and Resource Program. Best Friends Animal Society of Los Angeles is a grassroots effort to place so-called “unadoptable” cats and dogs into good homes, and to “reduce the number of unwanted pets through effective spay and neuter programs”. They also collaborate with animal rescue groups and city shelters, promoting kindness and care for animals. Best Friends expressed their gratitude to Whedonopolis: “Thank you so much for your amazing and generous gift in support of Best Friends Animal Society of Los Angeles. With this incredible investment we will be able to continue to save the lives of many homeless dogs and cats.” The Sova Community Food and Resource Program is operated by the Jewish Family Service, and dedicates itself to preventing and alleviating hunger and poverty throughout the Los Angeles area through food distribution and supportive services. Attendees and staff alike had a fantastic time scaring up some Halloween Dr. Horrible-ness, while helping others through charity in the spirit of Penny. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone next year, as Whedonopolis will add even more fun!

]]>On October 26th, 2013, we will be holding our first ever Whedonopolis Web Fest!
It’s an all-day celebration of the best in web series and web shorts! As always, this is a charity event, and this year we are proud to be benefiting Journey House Pasadena , a multi-service organization whose sole purpose is to assist emancipated foster youth over eighteen years of age to meet their initial independent living needs, to access adequate and appropriate housing, education, and employment, and to build their self-esteem through personalized attention and positive outreach services.
Here are some of the things you can expect to see this year:
Panel discussions with some of the best and brightest web filmmakers, giving their insight on how to take an idea and turn it into a web series for the world to see!
A competition between some of the best web series and web shorts of the year, and YOU get to decide the winner!
And, of course, our traditional screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and The Guild/ Season 6!
We’re still in the process of setting up the web portal for this event, so if you’re interested in volunteering, want to know when tickets go on sale, be a sponsor/benefactor, or you’re a web filmmaker who wants to submit a project to the competition, send us an email at [email protected], and we’ll make sure you’re the first to know when everything goes up. (Please note: Emailing us a link to your web series or short does NOT count as an official submission)
All of us at Whedonopolis are very excited to bring you a bigger and better event than ever before! Get ready for all sorts of fun!

Actor Doug Jones at the 2011 Saturn Awards.
Doug Jones has got to be one of our most favorite people in the world. His perpetual positive energy and outpouring of love to fans makes him extremely popular at Cons as well. And oh yeah, he’s had an impressive amount of memorable roles in film and TV that you may have seen. Whether as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy franchise, The Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four, über creepy Gentleman from Buffy, or his current hilarious recurring role as megalomaniac alien Dominique Wilkins on ABC’s The Neighbors, Doug is always fun to watch.
We at Whedonopolis are bursting with joy to announce that (schedule permitting) the lovely Doug Jones will be at our Dr. Horrible shindig on Saturday!
Doug is featured in Season 5 of The Guild (the one we’re showing) as snooty steampunker Gerald.
Doug will also autograph the pumpkin carved in his Buffy “Gentleman” character likeness from The Pumpkin Geek available in our prize drawing. It’s a true collector’s item and only available at the screening!
Dougie will be there. Will you?

You know him as a writer and producer of amazing television such as Angel, Firefly and Supernatural. Perhaps you also know him as the creator of one of the funniest comic book/cartoon series superheroes ever, The Tick. In fact, he has a “Very Special Thanks” credit in Dr. Horrible, and if you’ve read or seen The Tick, you can see why.
We at Whedonopolis are downright giddy to be able to announce that (schedule permitting) the awesome Ben Edlund has graciously accepted our invitation to our Dr. Horrible shindig in October!

]]>
Whedonopolis and Fandom Charities Inc are proud to announce the addition of internet series Husbands to the lineup of the 5th Annual Halloween Charity Screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.
Husbands is a quick-paced, witty comedy about marriage equality from the minds of Brad “Cheeks” Bell and Whedonite favorite, Jane Espenson. In the first season, we are introduced to newly un-closeted pro baseball player Brady (Sean Hemeon) and actor/tabloid darling Cheeks (Brad Bell) who dated for a scant few weeks before having a drunken Vegas wedding to celebrate the legalization of gay marriage. They decide to stay together rather than do a “Britney” and embarrass “the cause.” Alessandra Torresani (Caprica) does a hilarious turn as Haley, Cheeks’ alcoholic and effervescent BFF.
Whedonopolis will screen the second season of Husbands, which is chock-full of Whedonverse guest stars including the master himself, Joss Whedon, in his biggest acting role to date. Other familiar faces include Amber Benson, Felicia Day, Dichen Lachman, Emma Caulfied, and the list literally goes on and on! (In case you’re wondering, Nathan Fillion guested in season one.)
The second season of Husbands will be shown along with the fifth season of The Guild, and of course the headline attraction, Dr. Horrible.
The screening will be held on Saturday, October 27 at 7pm at the Barnsdall Gallery Theatre at 4800 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90027. Parking is free but limited. Street parking is available.
Proceeds of the event will benefit Best Friends Animal Society of Los Angeles. Attendees are also encouraged to bring non-perishable foods (canned meats and fish are especially needed) to donate to the SOVA Community Food and Resource Program.

Other special guests included Nathan Fillion, Whedonverse costume designer Shawna Trpcic, author of the Softwire Series PJ Haarsma, and geek-girl celeb Kristen Nedopak. Along with Master of Ceremonies and audiovisual guru Josh Rubinstein, they helped to kick off the first public screening of The Guild Season 4 in its entirety.
Remember that goody bag mentioned earlier? Those are important because if you’ve just been watching the show by yourself at home, you’re missing out on this crowd-pleasing enhancer. With Whedonopolis, not only is Dr. Horrible a sing-along, it’s also interactive! Nowhere else will you have your very own “lacy, gently wafting curtains” to wave around, or shrubbery to hide behind during key scenes.
Every year is a little different, and every year there are surprises. This year Shawna Trpcic teased the audience by announcing she was going to Tweet about Joss’s new project… which turns out to be an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing! And in the charity raffle, one lucky fan won an extremely rare prototype Captain Hammer laser etching.
You never know who could make an appearance or what could happen at this awesome screening, so for the love of Whedon and children’s literacy, make sure to add Dr. Horrible and The Guild to your future Halloween plans!

The line for the Regency Theatre formed early for the 2nd Annual Charity Screening of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and The Guild Season 2. In addition to seeing these two events on the large screen with cinema sound, the drawing prizes and other interactive goodies made this the Halloween event to be at.
Waving gently wafting curtains, shrubbery and glow-sticks, the sell-out crowd sang along with the karaoke version of Dr. Horrible, and hit all the cues on the mark.
Felicia Day kicked off the evening by introducing not just the second season of The Guild, but a Guild Halloween Special and the popular web music video hit Date My Avatar. To which everyone knew all the words, of course. In between the many things screened, there were drawing tickets, posters and buttons sold, all to benefit Kids Need to Read, the educational non-profit founded by Nathan Fillion and P.J. Haarsma, dedicated to getting books to underprivileged kids.
The-day-before-Halloween did not deter those who arrived in costumes and stood patiently in line, shopping for the many unique Dr. Horrible and The Guild buttons. The staff of the Regency doled out popcorn and $1 hotdogs as the lobby filled with costumes and video crews and drawing winners.
Over $5,000 was raised for Kids Need to Read with the generous donation from Creation Entertainment of a pair of Gold Passes to the upcoming Firefly/Serenity convention this weekend, November 21-22 at the LAX Marriot, where Nathan Fillion is scheduled to appear. The Charity Breakfast Auction on Sunday will also benefit Kids Need to Read, so get ready to rub shoulders with other Browncoats and celebrities for this great educational cause.

]]>This event was months in the planning, by the way. There are many, many legal hoops to jump through for an event like this. There are fees to pay, there are businesses to get sponsorship from, there are organizations that can waive their fees…and there are organizations that can’t. Whedonopolis works hard to be respected by the creators, producers, actors, directors, writers and their affiliations, so they feel comfortable dropping by, if they’re able (without being paid, in case you didn’t know) and visit all of us during a screening! Above all, we want to make sure that when we have a screening, that we have official permission to show the feature(s).
Yeah. Months.
Our resident graphic artist was doing some serious overtime, designing posters, designing programs, designing really cool ticket/receipts, designing the commemorative button, etc. Our liaisons were busy, busy, busy contacting as many different people as they could. Our legal department was making sure we never went ahead with anything until we got it right. We had gorgeous invitations sent out to the celebrities who attended…right on down to the Bad Horse Seal!
The screening was so much fun! We arrived early, to do some cursory setting up, but the last movie wouldn’t let out for a while. Some team members were able to grab a bite to eat (didn’t you love being so close to Canter’s?!), but some of us stayed to set up what we could and wait for others to arrive.
Okay, now I’m done with the editorial “we”.
I had gotten sick earlier that week, and even though I was feeling better, it was on this evening that my voice started to go. Let me tell you, though, there was no way I was going to miss this! As The Button Lady, I had managed to finish making all the buttons that Whedonopolis needed, and a few extra! Due to my mind-fog, I never took an inventory on the “extras” that I made, so if anyone wants to post here, which buttons they bought, and liked the most, we would really like that information for (drum roll, please) the next screening!
After I managed to get my buttons on my shirt, (with my friend Amy’s help),
I helped set up a little more and then went outside. If you’ve seen me before, you may know that I wear a full cape of buttons from various sci-fi shows when I go to conventions. I ask for donations to pay for my supplies. This time, Whedonopolis had already paid for all my supplies, and I only did all the work to make them. All the proceeds went back to Whedonopolis to be dispersed to PATH Ventures. We made over $200 just in buttons!!! Thank you all so much!
I also don’t normally have an entourage. There were 5+ people helping to show off the buttons! And everyone waiting in line was so generous!
I got to see a whole bunch of costumes while I was walking the line. I think next time we should have a costume contest (if time allows). What do you think?
Oh, and about the delay getting into the theatre. Most people who have blogged about this screening have mentioned the delay. The Whedonopolis team has spent time discussing how to communicate better and more effectively with people standing in line. This was our number one topic after everything was said and done. Every event will have bugs and hiccups, but we are making it our mission to communicate better in the future.
After we finished walking the line with the buttons (other staff members were walking the line with goody bags and drawing tickets…I barely noticed, I was so busy!) and people were being let in (finally! yes, we know! 😉 ) I made one last ditch effort to sell some more goody bags (I know you saw me!) and went into the theater.
The celebrity-factor of the screening was always very hush-hush, double-secret, close to the vest, if-I-tell-you-I’ll-have-to-kill-you. I was lucky enough to catch my ride with Whedonopolis’ Fearless Leader, so I got the skinny. But I tell you, I still had no idea who the heck was in that Luchador costume!
Felicia Day came up and took off her mask, said a few words and the screening began!
Because I’m still a rather auxiliary member of Whedonopolis, I was actually able to sit down for a good portion of the screening(s). A friend of mine saved me a seat on the aisle, so I could go back and forth when necessary. Other members of Whedonopolis didn’t really get to sit much.
There was a bit of a scramble behind the scenes at this point. There were more celebrities who were supposed to have arrived, but hadn’t. Fearless Leader was making calm, quiet phone calls with questions. But even at this point, Joss was never, never expected to come. He has two small children and it’s Halloween. I know where my priority would be.
Two Whedon brothers (who were expected) walked in just as The Guild was ending. I tried to sell them a goody bag. HeHe. I gave it to them, of course.
The drawing numbers were read. And jeez, people. ;-P Cheer when you win something, next time! I swear, I’m gonna get up on stage and make you!!!!
I was asked to do a goody bag routine on stage during the break. And while I was thinking about it, I saw The Master walk in. Joss was not expected. Joss had regrettably said no. Joss wanted to, but couldn’t make it.
Aren’t you glad we were running late? HeHe!
I think if we had been running on schedule that he might not have finished with the kids in time to be there. Joss got there early enough to see the whole Dr. Horrible screening.
At this point I RAN to the stage to do the goody bag routine, because I knew that JOSS MIGHT SEE ME!!!
C’mon! Wouldn’t you?
And thank goodness for my friend Josh (who was our DVD author) who brought me that microphone, because, by then, my voice had HAD it!
Now, let’s talk about the goody bags.
The horse puppets were discussed early on (as an appropriate substitute for the perennial Mutant Enemy “GrrArrgh”), as were the glow sticks, bubbles, poppers and pixie sticks (because everyone needs sugar-even though I had a devil of a time getting into the darned thing!) The commemorative button was always going to exist, but we ended up putting them in the goody bags (instead of selling them separately) because during a Whedonopolis meeting, I mentioned…very humbly, I might add…that all my other buttons are so! freaking! cool! that it’s possible we might not sell very many of the commemorative buttons in the competitive market.
My ego always has to have a say.
And so, that’s why everyone who bought a goody bag got a free button!
The “This is his hair!” was also my idea! I’m so proud! There was the discussion about whether we should use real hair (eeewww!) or donations from Whedonopolis’ mascot, Kendra (a very shed-happy German Shepherd named for a Slayer) or even ask Nathan to go bald…for a good cause. But, Whedonopolis ultimately decided to go “wig”.
Our graphic artist, who was seriously overworked, also designed and printed all the dry-cleaning bills. I just love them! Please don’t tell her that they were green, on screen. She’s choosing not to recall that.
Of course there was a comic book from the very generous Golden Apple Comics. (No, really. VERY generous. I could tell you stories.) There was also a notepad from a sponsor whose name was sadly missing from all of our posters! Please treat the notepad well. That sponsor received no other credit.
So, now we come to it. A mere one week before the screening, the two most stubborn members of Whedonopolis had two phenomenal ideas! Shrubbery and curtains. They discussed how easy they would both be to make while socializing during a movie night at a friend’s house. I overheard this. Their conversation was like a Judy Garland/Mickey Rooney movie. “My dad has a barn, and my mom can make the curtains!” Ah! If it were only that simple!
I know these two members. These are two people that you don’t argue with. Tell them something is impossible, and they will hold on like a mongoose on a cobra. Since I didn’t want to be the cobra in that metaphor, I simply walked quietly away, hoping against hope that they would change their minds.
But no. That next day, (the Saturday before the event) all members of Whedonopolis were gathered to stuff goody bags. We were aiming for 300 finished goody bags. By the end of an eight-hour day, the last-minute shrubbery was done, but with two sewing machines at work, there were only 65 curtains done.
Yikes. 6 days left.
Fearless Leader came in and asked if we could just do one side of the curtain. Wouldn’t people be happy with that? No! came the answer. That’s not a curtain! That’s a flag! And the two members continued sewing.
Another member walked in. Lovely idea, she said. Could we save it for the next screening? she said. No! came the answer. We’ll finish it!
Two days later. The Tuesday before the screening. This is the last time that people have to meet up en masse before the screening. This was when I got sick. I couldn’t go.
I sent my last brainchild of an idea – the pennies for Penny – over to the meeting with my boyfriend. There was no way they could finish 200+ curtains in a few hours in the evening. Cutting. Gluing. Sewing. No way.
But, by golly, they did! I swear, if something is impossible, Whedonopolis…and especially these two wonderfully stubborn, determined members of Whedonopolis will get it done!
So, to those of you got bought those goody bags: Cherish those curtains. They were hard-fought and tough-going. When one of those members (the other was working in the lobby) saw you all waving your curtains at the screening, I swear, she almost cried.
Meanwhile, at the end of the screening…
I might have ridden with the Fearless Leader of Whedonopolis, but I had no idea that Alan Tudyk was going to be there! Or Jeff Lewis! Of course, when I saw someone in a glowy costume, standing up, making himself known to everyone in the theater…I knew it had to be Nathan. He’s such a ham!
![]()
When Alan Tudyk was seated, we had an auxiliary member of Whedonopolis sit next to him as a buffer. But we didn’t tell her who she was sitting next to. When she found out, she was frozen stiff for the rest of the night.
So, when the guests took stage, the only question I hollered out to Joss was about the trick-or-treating. I don’t think my intention was noted, but my point had been to let people know that this man left his kids (I’m sure, after the events of the evening were over) to come visit with us.
When I saw Dr. Horrible screened at Comic-Con, I felt that the audience was rather staid. The audience knew Joss was there, and, I feel, was just a little intimidated to call things out to the screen. I just loved this screening, because the audience didn’t know that Joss was there. Near the end, when Penny dies, I purposefully called out, “Whedon! You B*****d!” People laughed. But I knew that Joss was there.
A few moments later, still during Penny’s death, someone near the front shouted, “Joss, you S**K!” People laughed even harder. THAT person did NOT know that Joss was there. Joss got to see honest enjoyment of his honest work.
That’s what I’m most proud of.

Before the first screening was underway, there was a surprise guest who showed up in a red wrestlers’ mask. Underneath the mask was Felicia Day, who took the mic to say hi to everyone and to usher in the big screen debut of The Guild.

The drawing of prizes was briskly announced between the shows, and once dispensed with winners’ squeals and missed-it-by-one-number groans, the main event screening was underway. From my vantage point near the back of the theater, there was much sneaking about of mysterious shadowy people, who ducked in and out of the “celebrity” seats. Despite the glow sticks in the goodie bags, it was very dark in the theater, and any attempts at “nuclear” flash photography might have amounted to audience blinding, and so other photographic tricks had to be undertaken. There’s nothing like a theater full of people waving glow sticks and lit cell phones, swaying in time to “Everything You Ever”, as Dr. Horrible finally enters the Evil League of Evil’s inner sanctum.

The show ended, despite its dark down note, to uproarious applause, as the pale and spooky real-life Grr Argh Guy lurched across the stage. The audience kept their seats, as they had been instructed to earlier, collective breaths held. From the stage, Marsia announced a few “surprise guests”, and the mysterious figures – one in a jumpsuit with weird glowy piping – emerged from their seats and made their way up to the stage, surfing ahead of a wave of growing excitement. Joss, Jed and Zach Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, all Dr. Horrible producers, and Felicia Day, sans mask, took the stage to screams of delight. And the glowy jumpsuit guy turned out to be Nathan Fillion, Captain Hammer his own self.

The audience was delirious with joy and the cameras, now free to flash, resembled Comic-Con’s Ballroom 20 when that first Serenity cast came on stage together, oh so many summers ago. Nathan announced that he had just recorded the commentary for the Dr. Horrible DVD, to be released soon and Joss thanked the audience for their raucous appreciation of Dr. Horrible.

Joss did reveal that Alan Tudyk was in the audience, and there were the corresponding squeals from the back when certain audience members suddenly realized who they were sitting in front of, behind, or next to.

On the way out, Alan Tudyk stopped the Grr Argh Guy to tell him “Hey, you really scared me.” It’s odd seeing a grown bald scary zombie squee, but it was Halloween.
In the lobby, the theater management had long since given up getting the midnight screening of “Night of the Living Dead” underway on time, and Joss and company, including Dollhouse actress Olivia Williams, and Jeff Lewis (who played Vork in The Guild), granted interviews and simply hung out with fans and stragglers. Joss signed the gorgeous lobby poster and graciously posed for individual pictures, along with directing everyone over to the stairs for a large group shot with the Whedonopoli.

The group, clustered tightly around Joss and his brothers, flash bulbs still popping on the sidewalk, when a red double-decker bus stopped at the red light, top deck filled with costumed party-goers, who saw Joss and screamed for the entire duration of the red light.

Given that this was the last event of the con, there was some worry that attendance would be sparce, as many made their way home catching flights, or stacked on the asphalt ribbon of Interstate 5, heading north. There was the doomsday vision of a tiny group of people huddled together in the first rows of Ballroom 20 walking through the fire. However, by about halfway through Deepak Chopra talking behind his Cylon-red glasses in the preceding panel, reports were drifting in from the redshirts on the lines that Ballroom 20 would be a full house. Indeed, once the Buffistas came into the room, Ballroom 20 was filled all the way to the back, and Whedonopolis and Comic Con staff were frantically passing out goodies before the first chords sent us into “Every single night, the same arrangement” accompanied by thunderous cheering.
The Closing Event, a fullhouse success, was on its way, with enthusiastic participation, much to the piqued curiosity of the tired and laconic redshirts, sitting behind the curtain offstage, listening to the crowd. At one point, the crowd reacted loudly, and one of the Elite supervisors leaped up to respond to what sounded like trouble in the mob. But it was just Buffy fans reacting to Spike’s musical proclamation of dying. “Listen to them goin’ crazy,” said one Elite member, retired Navy and never having seen Buffy. And indeed they were, waving glowing cellphones on cue and, in the tradition of all singalongs, singing along to the greeny lyrics subtitled onscreen beautifully by Whedonopolis’ own Josh Rubinstein.

When the last note ended on the big-screen kiss between Buffy and Spike, there was applause thunder-worthy of a true Ballroom 20 crowd to match the Joss Whedon and BSG panels. And then the final announcement – the final event of the 2008 Comic Con, closed in grand fashion by Whedon/Buffy fans. Floating on a musical high, we started making our way out of the now-familiar ballroom, when Comic Con had one more surprise for us – would we screen this for WonderCon in San Franciscoin February? Is the Evil League of Evil evil?

On the way to Pasadena, I witnessed a rainbow showing starkly against a grey and rainy sky…a good omen, I hoped. After arriving in Pasadena around 6pm to meet the rest of the team for dinner, we eventually all started to trickle in. Some of us brought supplies, some of us just brought ourselves, but eventually we all came together at Gordon Biersch for dinner.
Over dinner we discussed last minute items, such as some VIP’s that had just called us that afternoon, volunteer setup, and so on. Once we all had our assignments, we broke from dinner to get the theater set up for us. Several people, such as Kelly, Alison, and so on stayed inside to do some last minute goodie bag assembly. I, on the other hand, stayed outside with one of our volunteers, Wendy, to do crowd control.
One thing I’ll say about Whedon fans, they rarely need crowd control. If this screening and last year’s “Can’t Stop the Serenity” screening have taught me anything, it’s that Whedon fans are the most patient bunch of folks on the planet. People began to line up a little after 8:00 PM, even though we couldn’t let them in the theater until around 9:40 PM.
While I was outside, I helped sell goodie bags with the two Susan’s (Weber and Fox), Wendy, and Suzanne, and I had a great time interacting with the crowd. Most people seemed very happy to be there even with the wait. Thankfully, it wasn’t too cold or it might’ve been worse, but overall the weather cooperated with us despite a few sprinkles.
Once we allowed people into the theater, there was a mad rush for good seats, as was to be expected, but eventually everyone found their place within the theater. Before the show started, we all went down to the front so Marsia could introduce us. Then Maria came out and introduced our special guests, James Leary (Clem), Camden Toy (various baddies) and David Fury (writer/director). While I’d met Camden Toy at the Browncoat Backup Bash, I’d never met the other two, so this was a real joy.
Once introductions were out of the way, we all settled in to watch the show. Unfortunately, we were without the theater’s projectionist, so someone on the theater’s staff had to muck about with the DVD player. This led to several delays in starting both Once More with Feeling and Smile Time, but most people didn’t seem to mind too much.
Eventually, Once More with Feeling began, and the show was in full swing. It was amazing to see and hear everyone get into the show in some way, whether singing along or just waving a glow stick. Watching hundreds of people wave around glow sticks and blow bubbles was a real joy to behold, and singing along with the songs was fantastic. Also hearing everyone cheer for David Fury was a real treat.
During the first episode, Kelly and Marsia did the ticket drawing for the prize drawing at the end of the show. Marsia then tried to convince Kelly and I to go down to the front of the theater and do some theatrics, but we said no. She eventually convinced a couple of other folks – who weren’t a couple – to do it instead.
After Once More with Feeling was over, we had a short intermission so folks could go to the bathroom, and during this time I nearly fell asleep (I was exhausted after all). Once that was over, we eventually started Smile Time. Now this was the first time I’d ever seen Smile Time, so I was unsure what to expect. I certainly didn’t expect the funniest Buffy-verse episode I’d ever seen. I think my favorite part was the fight between puppet Angel and Spike. I was nearly rolling on the floor.
Once Smile Time was done, Marsia tried to announce the drawing winners over the DVD menu, which wouldn’t shut off (again, thanks to the lack of a projectionist). Once the winners were announced, we tried to shuffle everyone out of the theater so that the theater folks could clean up after us. Out in the downstairs lobby, I got to have a small conversation with David Fury, and I told him how much I enjoyed all of his Buffy and Angel episodes, which I did.
After giving the prizes to the winners and taking some pictures with the VIP’s, our crew – with Camden Toy in tow – went to a nearby diner called Conrad’s. While most folks ordered food, I just got coffee since I was too exhausted to eat. Eventually we left Conrad’s about 2:30 AM Saturday morning, and I got home around 3 AM.
Overall, despite some minor issues, I’d say the screening was a success. We made a lot of people happy, had a lot of fun, and raised a good amount of money for a worthy charity. I just hope the next one isn’t as exhausting as this one.

Before the screening fun got underway, the previously unannounced special guests were, um, announced. They were Camden Toy (character actor who portrayed a lead Gentlemen, Gnarl, the Ubervamp and many others), James Leary (‘Clem’), Ben Edlund (writer & director of ‘Smile Time’), and David Fury (writer & producer of ‘Buffy’, ‘Angel’, ‘Lost’, and currently ’24’). Then everyone finally sat down and ‘Once More with Feeling’ got underway. Songs were sung, bubbles were blown, light sticks were waved. The special guests joined in with our singing, yelling at the screen and everything. Extra cheering was thrown in for David Fury’s appearances in both episodes.
There was an intermission in between the episodes in which our Emcee, Marsia, ordered all potty breaks be taken NOW. Although ‘Smile Time’ did not lend itself as well to the singing, true fans knew the words to the puppet song by heart and the episode never fails to deliver in dark snarky humor. Raucous yells of "Wee Little Puppet Man!" filled the air. At the end, there was a short "trailer" for the new comic book- ‘Spike: Shadow Puppets’, put together by our own Maria G. and seen nowhere else.
Following the screening, the drawing winners were announced. 12" Dolls, CDs, comic book series and a much coveted Puppet Angel, were handed out to our lucky winners. And despite our running over our allotted time, the theater manager and staff of the Laemmle’s One Colorado were very patient and tolerant, as we all, eventually, shuffled out into the damp night. We regrouped at Conrad’s later, the only place open for food and noshings at 3 in the am. Camden joined us, which we think is very brave of him, and needless to say, we closed out the restaurant, if it’s possible to close an Always Open place.
The evening had been an unqualified success, not just because everyone had a good time, and not a few took home cool prizes, but more than $3,500 was raised for the Elizabeth Grazer Pediatrics AIDS Foundation. As David Fury mentioned, a couple of times, it was really cool seeing the episodes again, as he had not seen them in a few years, with the bonus of being on a BIG screen and quadraphonic sound. But the capper of the evening, the four words we all wanted to hear: "We’ll do this again!"
