While at San Diego Comic Con, we had a round tables sit-down with the cast of the SYFY series, Revival, the story of a rural Wisconsin town that is thrown into chaos when the recently deceased suddenly rise from the dead. Series stars Melanie Scrofano, Romy Holtman, David James Elliott and Andy McQueen discuss the complex relationships and difficult decisions facing their characters as they try to unravel the mystery of how and why the dead have been revived.

Romy Holtman talks about how much music helps in finding her character. “I always love making a playlist for characters because I do think that music can trigger so much anxiety — like, so much emotion — and in this case anxiety,” she explained. Melanie Scrofano touches on her penchant for roles where characters have a good moral compass but has a little problem with following rules. When asked if she was a “rule follower,’ she laughed, “In real life, oh yes! Yeah, yeah, yeah, but that’s why I need to play people who are like — flip the table.”

Scrofano tackles the question of how her character, Dana, handles being a police officer working so closely with her father, Sheriff Wayne Cypress (played by David James Elliott). She struggles to get him to see the capable deputy she is rather than as the rule-breaking daughter she used to be. Both ladies discuss the emotions they needed to tap into in order play the extreme, adrenaline filled situations their characters face.

David James Elliott discussed the conflict his character, Wayne, faces when he realizes that his actions regarding the “revivals” hits much closer to home than he thought.

Andy McQueen talks about his character, Ibrahim’s, love of science that he will have to reconcile with his faith and beliefs in the coming episodes.

Revival airs Thursdays on SYFY and episodes available the next day on Peacock.

THE SIX-EPISODE SEASON WILL PREMIERE

JULY 28TH ON AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

Cast: Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Jon Hamm, Doon Mackichan, Gloria Obianyo, Miranda Richardson, Maggie Service, Nina Sosanya, Liz Carr, Quelin Sepulveda, Shelley Conn

Synopsis: Originally based on Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s international best-selling novel, Good Omens 2 explores storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the ineffable friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare-book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley (David Tennant). Having been on Earth since The Beginning, and with the Apocalypse thwarted, the duo are getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho. That is, until the archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) turns up unexpectedly at the door of Aziraphale’s bookshop with no memory of who he is or how he got there. While Crowley is leery as to why the archangel has come to the bookshop, Aziraphale is keen to solve the mystery behind Gabriel’s condition. However, hiding the archangel from both Heaven and Hell quickly disrupts their lives in unforeseen ways. To solve this mystery and thwart Heaven and Hell in the process, the duo will need more than a miracle; they’ll need to once again rely on each other.

A mystery that takes us from before The Beginning, to biblical times, grave robbing in Victorian Edinburgh, the Blitz of 1940s England, all the way through to modern day, Good Omens 2 stars Michael Sheen and David Tennant as angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley, respectively. Also reprising their roles are Jon Hamm as archangel Gabriel, Doon Mackichan as archangel Michael, and Gloria Obianyo as archangel Uriel. Returning this season in new roles are Miranda Richardson as demon Shax, Maggie Service as Maggie, and Nina Sosanya as Nina, with new faces joining the misfits in Heaven and Hell: Liz Carr as angel Saraqael, Quelin Sepulveda as angel Muriel, and Shelley Conn as demon Beelzebub.

Check out the season 2 behind the scenes video

Neil Gaiman continues as executive producer and co-showrunner along with executive producer Douglas Mackinnon, who also returned to direct all six episodes. Rob Wilkins of Narrativia, representing Terry Pratchett’s estate, John Finnemore, and BBC Studios Productions’ head of comedy Josh Cole also executive produce, with Finnemore serving as co-writer alongside Gaiman. Good Omens is based on the well-loved and internationally best-selling novel by Pratchett and Gaiman. The new season is produced by Amazon Studios, BBC Studios Productions, The Blank Corporation, and Narrativia.

About the GEIGER series:
Written by Geoff Johns (Green Lantern, Shazam!, JSA, Aquaman) and illustrated by Gary Frank (Doomsday Clock, The Incredible Hulk, Batman: Earth One, Shazam!), Geiger launched Mad Ghost’s imprint at Image Comics to critical and commercial acclaim, introducing a new universe of mysterious heroes throughout history called The Unnamed. Set 25 years in the future, Geiger centers around a radioactive family man named Tariq Geiger who spends his days and nights doing anything he must to protect the fallout shelter housing his family. When Geiger fights off a group of violent scavengers, he faces the wrath of the criminal empire they are connected to. Johns and Frank also recently collaborated on the launch of Junkyard Joe, a Geiger spinoff about a heroic robot soldier.

You obviously play this really well-known character. One of the first things that jumps out is his voice. How did you manage to sustain that kind of deep, solid voice for so long, for so many scenes?

Tom Sturridge: I guess because I didn’t think about the physicality of it, how to create it. I thought about what Neil told me, which was that Dream should sound like the voice inside your head. He should sound like the voice that summons you to sleep. And he should sound like the voice that guides you through your fears and your fantasies. And I started to think about what that would sound like, and it was much more trying to realize that intention than about trying to have a deep voice.

I haven’t seen anything other than the trailer. It’s an amazing trailer, and I’m super excited. When I saw the trailer, I was like, “This is the guy. This is the guy.” So it is an intimidating kind of character to try to personify, and a lot of it has to do with physicality as well. So how did you think about the arc of where your character’s starting and where you’re going and tackle that? But also just mentally, you have an arc, you have a huge arc to go through.

Tom Sturridge: I mean, so I see what’s incredibly bizarre about adapting a graphic novel is unlike anything else, you have these images to return to… But so with realizing the physicality, a lot of the ideas were generated quite literally from looking at these images and finding ways to make them breathe and move. The arc of his character, I think the most important thing within the story we’re telling in this season is the birth of empathy inside of him. I think that comes from being impotent and powerless for the first time in his existence, and suddenly being in a space where he has to think about who he is.

And most importantly, he requires the help of humans to regain that power. To find his tools of office. He needs Johanna Constantine. He needs Matthew, who is a human inside a Raven. He needs to understand how John Dee feels, to try and win back that ruby. And then, most importantly, his sister Death teaches him how important it is to feel how other creatures feel because that’s the only way you can take them into the afterlife. And I think that education really changes him and opens him up, changes his relationship with Lucifer, changes the way that he deals with dreams and nightmares who have betrayed him. Yeah. I think the key arc is him opening up the insecurity he has, and starting to feel how other creatures feel who aren’t him.

Neil always says that Dream’s most important title is Prince of Stories and I just wanted to know, what does that mean to you, both for the character and in general? As a storyteller, as an actor, what is it about…? And this is a story about stories. Talk about that power.

Tom Sturridge: One of the most important things to me about Sandman is exactly what you just said. It is a story about stories. Although it has a cohesive narrative, it’s about how the stories we tell each other inflict themselves upon our lives and upon our dreams. Neil Gaiman is a storyteller. I am just a prop in that way..

I think what’s really important is for large groups of people to bear witness to the same stories because I think we are all different and we all think differently and react differently, but we can only really understand each other if we talk about the same things. Does that make sense?

Like if we all go and watch Sandman together, we’re all going to think entirely different things about it. But there’ll be a bond in us talking about what we think about it. And that’s why stories began around campfires. That’s why they continued into theaters. And that’s why they went to the cinemas because it’s about people being in a dark space and listening.

Like recognizing something that’s not from their own experience.

Tom Sturridge: Exactly. Yeah. But then, talking about it with a person next to them who potentially also has had a different experience.

Do you think Dream has that lesson to learn because he’s been sort of jaded by his own realm or his own existence? Or what does it mean to him?

Tom Sturridge: I think it’s complicated. I think that Dream contains… He contains the fears and fantasies of every single being in the universe, which means he does understand how other things, creatures, feel, but he has to hold it inside. And his burden is this kind of discipline that he has to have, and that’s why he seems so enclosed. And I think what he needs to learn is how to open up so that he can better understand what his responsibilities are.

If he felt everything that everyone who’s ever existed ever felt, it would be too much.

Tom Sturridge: Too much. Exactly. So you have to hold it in. That’s why he seems so insolated.

And then in terms of when we first meet Dream, obviously he’s been imprisoned…been through a lot. How would you describe his sort of emotional state in the first episode? And also for you, having to do those kind of naked, vulnerable scenes, how did you feel filming those?

Tom Sturridge: I think I probably felt relatively similar to him. The glass sphere that they constructed took such a long time to break apart, to get out, that actually I would spend hours in there because otherwise it would just slow down the shot so much. So genuinely felt imprisoned. But I think it’s the first time in his existence that he’s become powerless, or at least significantly less powerful. And I think that that is… if not frightening, it’s a cause for contemplation. I think he’s angry. I think he wants vengeance. I think that there is danger and a violence in him, a need to destroy those who have done this. And I think that’s the energy that begins the journey. But as the key episode, episode six, when he talks to Death, he’s fueled by this vengeance, but it leads nowhere. What was exciting for him was a quest, and the moment the quest is completed, he feels empty. There just has to be something more than hate.

One of the first questions, my burning question is Tom Ellis as Lucifer has made his version of Lucifer famous at the moment. So I was wondering if that informed your version at all?

Gwendoline Christie: I have great respect for Tom, but I didn’t think it would be helpful for me to watch someone else’s performance of a Lucifer role. I played Lucifer actually at Manchester Royal Exchange on stage, maybe 2009 ish. I can’t quite remember. So-

In what?

In Dorchester. And I actually was propelled out of the ceiling in chain mail, colored gray with my hands on fire. So it was a role I really wanted to revisit. And I’m very lucky in that. I had an amazing training at Drama Centre London, which was a classical training with a method approach. And we were always told to look at a wide range of material. It can be the strangest thing that comes to you and says, “That is Lucifer. That essence, that look, the feeling of the sun here on my face, scorching feeling, that’s Lucifer.” So I looked in other areas just because I wanted to make this my own like I do every single part I play.

So, which specific areas did you look at for the part?

Gwendoline Christie: Well, I looked at the comics and I read them again and again and again. And I looked at Neil’s other works and thought about his soul and what it is he tries to communicate and what it is he wants to communicate and what it was he wants to communicate with Lucifer. And I also thought it was very clear to me with our world events and the number of global crisis that we seem to be increasingly aware of. Just what evil means to me and how it manifests in the human body.

Where does it take us? Where does it take our psyche? Where does it take our emotions? And as maybe alien as some of that luckily felt, I was fascinated by exploring it. That’s what I’m interested in. Things where I don’t feel safe.

Where it feels like a challenge for me, maybe the behavior of the character feels entirely alien to me. Maybe it’s something I don’t naturally do. And so it’s a pleasure to work continuously on trying to bring something about that isn’t natural to me.

Is your version of Lucifer wholly evil in your mind?

Gwendoline Christie: I never ever think any character is evil. I never think any character is good. I just think of them as… Well, Lucifer isn’t human. Lucifer is fallen angel, but I think of them as entities.

I haven’t seen the episodes myself, but a little birdie told me you have an episode that’s pretty much just all about your character. And is there anything in that episode that it really struck you and you were super excited? You want people to see it, or-

Gwendoline Christie: Yes, absolutely. I mean, what was thrilling? What’s thrilling about playing any characters when they go through a change, when they are challenged, when the stakes are incredibly high and there is a huge risk. And I was excited to work with Tom, particularly when I got onto set and realized that he was Dream, that he was so committed to the role that he was immersed in that experience. And so that was a great pleasure and fun to come to people that would be very serious, to come about and try that out. And I loved him as well. I loved Tom. He was so generous and so respectful and you need that basis. We all need that basis in order to try things out creatively, in order to go there, particularly when you are not dealing with the nice emotions

In Sandman, that Lucifer’s role as the Monarch of Hell is sort of that classical take that it’s a punishment for Lucifer. What did that feel like? And when you’re playing against Dream, is there jealousy? Is Lucifer jealous of dream? Is that why there’s that level of resentment of what Dream is versus Lucifer?

Gwendoline Christie: I think that Lucifer is simultaneously laissez-faire about every single person, every single creature, every single entity, and simultaneously is consumed with jealousy and shame. Consumed with it. Because from going from being God’s chosen one, God’s favorite angel to live a life entirely of punishment. You have very little.

Yeah. And how did you react when you found out they changed up the script so that Lucifer was the one that got to do the imagination battle of Dream rather than-

Gwendoline Christie: Very, very exciting. And can I just say they have done a phenomenal job with it. They’ve done a phenomenal job of making that come to life. And I loved playing the relationship with Tom. The relationship between the two of them. There was also a lighting state that Jamie Charles, the director, used which felt… It seemed to put us into a hallucinogenic state, which was exciting.

I was wondering, as a lot of people thought this was unfilmable, what sort of notes did you get from Netflix? Were there things that were off limits or things that they were worried about?

Neil Gaiman: It was unfilmable, but it was unfilmable because everybody tried to take the 3,000 pages of Sandman and make a two hour film of it and that’s why it was unfilmable. You never wound up with anything that was satisfying, interesting or worked. There was just too much. It was like trying to put the ocean into a glass.

What we did, as Allan and David Goya and I planned to do Sandman, [we] did an event at Warner Brothers where we explained what we were going to do, which would be Sandman, to a bunch of different streamers. A week later, after frenzied bidding, Netflix had won it and then we did Sandman. So it wasn’t like they were like, “Aha. Now we have won the Sandman. We would like you to do this, this and this and this. It was like, no, they bid for the Sandman that we were going to be making.

And then they just left you to it?

Neil Gaiman: They were really helpful. They were really great. Just as Warner Brothers TV were really helpful and really great. Certainly, we were making this during the height of the pandemic.

We shot episode three in a London in full lockdown, in which the only people allowed out were movie crews for some reason, because we were deemed essential. So in episode three, there are, if you look carefully at the screen, there are no cars moving in the background. There are no tiny distant extras or anything.

Yeah. I think I’ve heard about that when it was happening and it was that really dead zone.

Neil Gaiman: Absolutely. It was completely a dead zone. So everybody, we worked so closely with Netflix and with Warner’s to get this thing made, but they weren’t ever trying to turn it into anything else. I don’t ever recall a time where they said, “Hey, we think that, wouldn’t it be good if Death did this or Dream said that.” That stuff just didn’t happen.

Well, given that you weren’t really asked to make that many changes, there are still a relatively large amount of structure changes and things like that. The biggest thing that stuck out to me when I was watching was introducing Matthew earlier, so that he’s on that journey with Dream while he’s on that first quest. Why was he brought in at that point? Is it because he needed someone to kind of-

Neil Gaiman: Episode four of Sandman in the comic is narrated by Dream. You are inside his head. He is your narrator. And it’s a first person, “I’m going to Hell. I’m scared. All of this stuff is happening.” Matthew was created to give Dream somebody to talk to. He was created to allow conversation to happen. He was created so that he could stand in for the audience And go, “Who is this?”

We talked early on, “Are we going to do narration? Are we going to be in Dream’s head?” And stuff. And we wound up being in Dream’s head just a little bit for episode one. But after that it was like, “If we’re not going to do that, then why don’t we move Matthew’s arrival up earlier?” And Matthew is there, basically, for a little bit in episode three, in episode four. Episode five is sort of not really Matthew and there’s no Matthew in episode six. So then at the beginning of the Doll’s House, he’s there, but also now he’s been introduced and set up.

In a way that he wouldn’t have been in the first episode.

Yeah. It was just one of the changes that stuck out to me as interesting.

Allan Heinberg: It also played nicely because we had introduced Jessamy into the first episode.

And watching Dream deal with grief… There are new ways to get to know Morpheus without him telling you this is what I’m doing.

Those two animal deaths in the first two episodes were shocking, hard-hitting in a way that really made Morpheus feel very softer to me that he feels when you start reading the book. I guess why that choice as well? Like why soften him-

Allan Heinberg: You just said it. Here’s a character who in the book is wrapped in mystery and because our strategy for the show, making this Morpheus’s story, we wanted the audience to fall in love with him and really identify his struggle and identify with his struggle and make him more relatable.

So those were very emotional ways to get to know him. A character who seems shut down and removed, but who really is feeling so much that if you let any of that out, there would be chaos.

I have not seen the screeners, so I’m behind everybody else. What I did see is Good Omens, your translation to that, was amazing. And I love that show. So I’m anticipating loving this one just as much, but you guys were hitting on some of the changes that you’ve made. Is there anything in particular that translated better on television than it did on the page that you were really excited about exploring?

Neil Gaiman: I love the shape of the serial killers’ convention stuff done as television, because I didn’t have that number of pages to tell my story in the Doll’s House. And what I love is that I feel like the serial killers’ convention and Rose’s story and the whole of a Doll’s House has a lot more… You get to set things up in ways that I just didn’t have the room to set things up in the story. I love the fact that little Jed, her brother, is all the way through the story, but points where, in the comic I actually went, “I want to bring him into this.” And then went, “I can’t, I don’t have the room with everything I need to do. And I’m already at 36 pages on this episode.”

So he was locked in the trunk of the car for the episode, for the issue in the comics, because I couldn’t do anything with him, but we had more room and we have more space. So now we can bring him in and he’s somebody else for the audience to care about. And you watch him in the Corinthian bonding and it allows you to go, “Okay, well, really the Corinthian, on the one hand, he is a murderous spirit of serial killing who is eating people’s eyeballs. And on the other hand, he is what he is and he just wants to survive and he’s not actually evil. This is what he was made to be.”

I mean, some of the characters then, because translating that from the screen, for example, Matthew, the Crow, Fiddler’s Green, how do you decide prosthetics, CGI, practical?

Allan Heinberg: Well, Matthew was a real raven and Jessamy was a real crow, a pied crow for as much as we could use. All that was shot practically with real birds. Then the CGI was all modeled on those real birds and hopefully you can’t tell which is which. So that was really important to us that we tried to do everything as practically as possible. And then the VFX, CGI stuff is last resort.

Neil Gaiman: I would say that Jessamy is probably 80% real pied crow, 15% puppet and 5% CGI, something like that. But the CGI is mainly there just to tie moments together and to get the bird in and out of shot. One of the things though that I think is so important about Sandman was making things happen practically. It’s like when Morpheus is with Gregory, he isn’t acting with a tennis ball on a stick. He is acting with a puppeteer, holding a Gregory head of the right size and the puppeteer is acting and the head is being active.

Allan Heinberg: We were crying on set. And it’s a puppet, it’s a puppet head and we’re crying because the scene is so… But Neil’s right, if that hadn’t made us cry, there’s no way that…

Neil Gaiman: I love that it made you cry, but it made you cry because it made us cry because we care.

One thing is clear from AMC’s Interview with the Vampire press conference, the depth of emotion will be enormous on this show. Everyone just kept talking about it. And they said it’s a testament to Annie Rice’s work and Creator and Showrunner Rolin Jones’ script. “There’s a depth of feeling in this book
A level of language and beauty that isn’t seen in other books,” Rolin said.

Executive Producer Mark Johnson said Anne Rice’s vampires are unique as they are more human than most portrayed vampires. “They want the same things we do. They want to be loved, they want to be understood, they feel loneliness, and they’re not just there to be sensational. They’re there to be human,” said Mark.

Jacob Anderson, who plays Louis, also spoke about the depth of emotions by saying it’s a massive depth of feeling. It’s very intimate. It’s a love story of a dysfunctional family. Sam Reid, who plays Lestat, said that vampires have a sense of loneliness because they lose everything unless they turn the people they care about too. He also said that it’s complicated to play these creatures because you can be enjoying someone’s conversation one minute and wanting to rip their throat out the next. People don’t operate like that, so it’s hard to get into that mindset. Bailey Bass, who plays Claudia, said they explore a lot about who these characters are in seven episodes. She comments on how beautifully complex her character is. Rolin loved what Kirsten Dunst did in the film but said this would be a different interpretation. That one already exists, so he didn’t want to recreate that. Most of the actors chose not to take anything from the film. Jacob said there was enough from the books for him to draw from. Bailey did watch the movie during the audition process because it was the quickest way for her to learn about the world. But she read the books also and took inspiration from those. Sam just happened to re-watch the film right before getting the audition but chose not to take note of it because he didn’t want to recreate that.

Mark said there are some differences from the book, but it’s really Rolin’s interpretation of the book series. So the changes he made were his interpretation of what happens in that world. As fans may know, the film took some liberties, but that could partly be because of time. With a series, Rolin can explore more of the books. He estimated that each episode is roughly 20 pages from the first book. So fans can either re-read the book along with the series or read it for the first time if they’ve only seen the movie. This also gives them time to show Louis as a human and see Lestat seduce him. They will also be exploring what Louis is like in 2022. Jacob took special care to think about how Louis would be and how he would change through the years. They knew Louis had to be “jarringly” different in the present.

Sam said Rolin took such care with the script. The words they are saying are coming straight from Anne Rice. The dialogue wasn’t the only thing this team took great care in creating. The sets were another part of telling the story. Jacob recalled being terrified to take on Louis, but Jacob went on a walk around the stage, which got him into character. Production Designer Mara LePere Schloop quickly realized they would have to build a set because everything was shot at night, and they wouldn’t be able to shut down the French Quarter. Also, Storyville was torn down in the 1930s, so they had to recreate it and show its evolution. The evolution was shown by lights. They were constantly updating as the story went along.

The incredible thing is they also filmed in some of the places Anne Rice wrote and researched at. New Orleans has an excellent preservation society, so they have all those records. As Anne did with her book, Rolin did a lot of research to give the story great detail. It shows in the trailer, and that’s just a glimpse of the universe he’s bringing alive from the page.

Eric Bogosian, who plays Daniel Molloy, said he was similar to his character in that they had a rough go of things and then at 40 really hit their stride, and now they’re in their 60s and their best days are behind them. He believes this may be his last chance for another big story when this one comes back to him. It’s not a safe situation. Daniel has a vampire right in front of him, but he’s ready to risk it all to get the story. He’s also got immortality staring him straight in the face, which means something different to him now than it did when he was younger. The show really explores many avenues of emotions.

Music also plays a big role in the series. Lestat is a musician, so it plays a role that way, but Jacob said Rolin is an encyclopedia of music, and the score is like nothing out there at the moment. He also believes there are no other vampires like this in the media at the moment. So, while vampire stories have been told before, this brings a unique take on it.

Julie Plec, Marguerite MacIntyre and the cast of Vampire Academy walked into a very excited Indigo Ballroom at San Diego Comic-Con. These were genuine fans of the books and were ready to see who would embody the characters they loved.

Julie’s journey to creating the Vampire Academy started even before she started The Vampire Diaries. She read the books around 2007/2008 before she even read the TVD books. She fell in love with them and knew she wanted to make a series out of it, but no one was making the kind of show she wanted to make at the time. It wasn’t until 2020 when she was asked if she could make any show what would it be, and she replied the Vampire Academy. This was at Peacock. “They instantly said yes,” Julie said

Julie reached out to Marguerite. She wasn’t quite sure at first if she wanted to do another vampire series, but she remembered loving the books because “It’s about a class system that’s unsustainable that’s falling apart, that’s unfair, there’s a regime change there’s real struggle in that land
That’s familiar. There’s a way that we can understand the pressures that these beautiful young women are under,” Marguerite said. She went on to say it’s a story about two best friends that society doesn’t want to be together, and it’s a story she wanted to tell.

Preserve the things that we loved about the books
So we were staying true to the story, the characters and the world that was built and not forgetting to dramatize all the incredible moments along the way.

If you’ve read the books, you know the story pretty well. Julie and the cast assure fans of the book series will be happy. They made sure to “preserve the things that we loved about the books
So we were staying true to the story, the characters and the world that was built and not forgetting to dramatize all the incredible moments along the way,” Julie said. But there are some changes. For starters, the series doesn’t start the same way as the books. Julie decided to start it before where the first book started. It’s the night of the tragic car accident. Julie believed there was an untold story there that she wanted to tell. The first season is also not the first book. Julie and Marguerite played around with parts of several of the books. For example, they pulled the big political story up to have in the first season. Julie said they pulled many of the “real intrigue stuff forward.” Fans may or may not be disappointed that the lust spell doesn’t appear on the show. The party and the spell weren’t really the story that Julie and Marguerite wanted to tell.

Sisi Stringer, who plays Rose Hathaway, chimes in here to say the story they told was better and hotter than the books. Sisi is a true fangirl of the books. She was a fan long before the show came to be. Sisi loved reading them as a young girl and can’t believe she gets to be a part of it now. When auditions first happened, Sisi knew she wanted to play Rose immediately because she thought she already knew the characters. Clearly, Julie agreed.

It’s about a class system that’s unsustainable that’s falling apart, that’s unfair, there’s a regime change there’s real struggle in that land
That’s familiar. There’s a way that we can understand the pressures that these beautiful young women are under.

Sisi Stringer (Rose Hathaway) and Daniela Nieves (Lissa Dragomir)

Daniela Nieves, who plays Lissa Dragomir, read the books as soon as she knew it was a series and immediately became obsessed with them. “At the core of it is this female friendship. In my personal life, my female friendships drive my life, so having that and knowing I can be a part of that really excited me,” Daniela said.

Of course, friendship isn’t the only type of relationship in the story. AndrĂ© Dae Kim, who plays Christian Ozera, spoke about his character and Lissa’s relationship. He said it’s a classic romance. They have a shared experience of losing family and resentment towards society. He added that they’re the type of relationship where the two can’t be together because of distance or circumstances. Daniela said they had an unspoken thing from the very beginning.

And there’s also a love triangle, and we know how well Julie does love triangles. This time it’s between Rosa, Dimitri and Mason. If you’re a fan of the books, you know Mason was killed off, but they loved the actor Andrew Liner so much that they decided not to kill Mason off. At least not yet. You know how Julie likes to do things. I’m sure it will be when we least expect it and when she makes us fall in love with him first.

During the panel, the cast also shared their experience meeting in person for the first time. Vampire Academy was filmed in Spain, so they all met in Madrid and went for a fun night out, but Daniela slipped and fell, and she was so embarrassed she just lay there. Sisi said the boys came to her rescue. Kieron Moore, who plays Dimitri Belikov, said he thought he was a horrible Gauridan to her (since his character is her character’s Guardian in the series). Sisi described Kieron holding on to a pizza and panicking a little that Daniela fell and he wasn’t there to catch her.

Kieron also had a fun reaction to meeting Marguerite for the first time. During the table read, he couldn’t stop staring at her. He was a big fan of TVD and couldn’t believe Sherrif Forbes was sitting right in front of him!

The biggest takeaway for season one, besides the carefulness of making sure to stay true to the essence of the books and how much fun the cast is, was what the first season would center around story-wise. Marguerite said it’s about these two friends who met when they were five. Rose was kind of brought into the Dragomir family and lived this sheltered life because of it. But after Lissa’s family dies, that bubble is burst, and they are thrown into the different worlds they were born into, and they have to decide what to do.

Season one of the Vampire Academy premieres on Peacock on Sept. 15.

Even without all of the Teen Wolf actors, fans were excited while awaiting creator Jeff Davis, Tyler Posey and Tyler Hoechlin in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. Posey’s entrance may not have been as extravagant as in other years, but he got up on a chair to make his entrance. No broken toe this year — as he and Jeff mentioned in the panel. Apparently, Tyler P. was in excruciating pain in the press room later that day. The boys were officially back, and for Hoechlin, this was what he was most excited about coming back to Teen Wolf. He recalled once again that the first time they were at Comic-Con, no one wanted them, but the following year the fans were welcoming. There was a lot of reminiscing on stage. The Tylers shared their love for each other multiple times — apparently hugged each other about 50 times on the first day on the set of the movie.

Tyler P. has been an advocate for bringing the show back and said, “before we even ended, I knew it was going to end at some point. I was like, ‘I need this sh*t back, immediately.’ And I think. I don’t know. I mean, first of all, I’m in the best place I’ve ever been in my entire life, you know? So it just feels cool. It just feels serendipitous that the show is back right now. We took a long enough step away from it to really appreciate it and miss it. The show consumed our lives for 10 years. And we were just constantly busy filming the show, and so I think we all needed a break.”

But before they got into all the excitement of the movie. They brought it all the way back to day one of filming the series. “I remember shooting the pilot. It’s not always the best memories that you hold on to, it’s sometimes the worst, and our first day was an absolute disaster. The camera broke down, it was freezing, we realized nobody knew anything about Lacrosse, and that’s what we were shooting that day,” Jeff said.

The crowd laughed, and Tyler P responded, “speak for yourself
And the trailer caught on fire.”

“Actually, the trailer caught on fire about the third day, I think,” Jeff added.

Before we even ended, I knew it was going to end at some point.

Despite the not-so-great beginning, everyone seemed to love working on the set. Jeff said that even the cast that was done with Teen Wolf came back to watch the final episode and told him it was their best job and asked him to hire them on his next project and pay them more.

As we know, Jeff is circling back around to Teen Wolf. He initially told Paramount+ he would not do another season, so they asked about a movie. So, Jeff started writing the film and putting it together with Russell Mulcahy and Joe Genier. The script ended up being 138 pages, and at some point, he realized he was writing an extremely long movie. “I realized I wrote a short season seven,” Jeff said. Sadly, it’s unclear if all of it will make the cut. But apparently, there are 20 main characters.

I remember shooting the pilot. It’s not always the best memories that you hold on to, it’s sometimes the worst, and our first day was an absolute disaster. The camera broke down, it was freezing, we realized nobody knew anything about Lacrosse, and that’s what we were shooting that day

And Scott McCall is older than Posey in the movie. “Yes. My character is now older than I am. I’ve never been the same age as Scott. When we first started, he was 15. I was 18. Now he’s like 55. And I’m 30,” Tyler P. said. FYI, he’s not 55. He’s in his 30s.

This segued into a conversation about all of Posey’s tattoos. And Jeff said he didn’t write any of these tattoos into the movie, and the only one he did in the show was the iconic tattoo from season three. Jeff also joked that Tyler P. only wears long sleeves, and Posey said he doesn’t have to show his body anymore. But, of course, the crowd did not like that at all.

When we first meet up with Scott in the film, he’s not in Beacon Hills anymore. “Yeah. Okay. So Beacon Hills kind of messed Scott up. And I think along with everybody here. Beacon Hills was a f*cking wild ride. Right?” Tyler P. said. Scott needed to step away, so he’s in L.A. He’s working at a vet. He’s lonely and dealing with being a human and saving himself.

As for the bigger picture, Jeff said the filmmaking didn’t change because they were overly ambitious for their budget back then and were still excessively ambitious now. “The real fun of it for me was getting them back together and seeing where the characters were in their lives this time—and also asking the question, what happened to them? Where are they now? And I think we came up with some good ideas, and actually, we also introduced a few interesting new characters too,” Jeff said.

One of the major new characters is Derek Hale’s son, Eli, played by Vince Mattis. Both Tylers are producers of the movie, and they brought Hoechlin in to help find his character’s son. It was essential to Tyler H. that it wasn’t just a credit and that he did something with it. Hoechlin helped with the auditions and did chemistry reads over Zoom because of Covid.

Yeah. Okay. So Beacon Hills kind of messed Scott up. And I think along with everybody here. Beacon Hills was a f*cking wild ride. Right?

The most exciting part of the panel was when they showed the trailer for the movie. The crowd erupted when they saw Crystal Reed on screen. So, of course, it was time to discuss Alisson after the lights came back on. After the official movie announcement, Crystal had texted Jeff, and he responded, asking how she would feel about picking up the bow and arrow again. She texted back, saying she “burst into tears.” She was in from the first moment and was excited about Jeff’s ideas.

Posey said it was great getting to work with Crystal again because they’ve both grown up a lot since they last worked together and now have similar interests. Scott P. added that it rocks Scott’s world to have Allison back but can’t say much more because Jeff was ready to jump across the table to stop him from revealing spoilers.

“Jeff has instilled it in us that if we leak anything, he would fire us. He doesn’t give a
sh*t if we are the leads of the movie. Jeff will find another one,” Posey said. And apparently, a guy on TikTok looks exactly like Tyler, and Jeff said he could do it.

If you saw the panel, you heard all the swear words that Tyler P. used during it, and he also announced they would be using the F word in the Teen Wolf movie. It sounds to be the R-rated version of the show that was on MTV.

The three of them were tight-lipped once getting into movie details. Tyler H. was asked how he felt about where his character left off. His only answer was “no” because he wasn’t allowed to give anything away. He would say it was an exciting ending, but Jeff countered with it’s an emotional ending. So, until we see the movie, you can do what you will with that. We’ll be on the edge of our seats, hoping everyone makes it. But Jeff did say they are in discussions about doing more. So this may not be the end of Teen Wolf.

In a fun surprise, Jeff was asked about The Buffy the Vampire Slayer inspiration and if he would get Sarah Michelle Gellar on the show. The Teen Wolf creator said he would love that and announced Sarah would be starring in the spin-off, Wolf Pack, and then Sarah got on the stage. The crowd was very excited by the surprise. It also seemed like a great way to end the panel.

Check out the intense trailer for the Teen Wolf movie. It’s got most of your old favorites. And many old enemies and locations that will give you major nostalgia.

San Diego Comic-Con hosted a panel on both shows.

A person who’s approaching middle age decides to take on a career in law enforcement, while friends and family wonder if it’s a good idea. Sound familiar?

It’s the plot for ABC’s The Rookie with Nathan Fillion, which has been a popular show for four years.
Now, he’ll be joined by Niecy Nash-Betts in a spinoff called The Rookie: Feds. She plays Simone Clark, a former guidance counselor who wants to fulfill her dream to join the FBI. Despite the fact she doesn’t follow guidelines, she shows her personal experience is more than enough to proves she belongs.
That also sounds familiar, but Neicy makes this role her own. Fans may also remember her from Reno 911 and Scream Queens.

Both Nathan and Niecy appeared via Zoom at the start of Thursday’s lineup at Ballroom 20. Although some fans were mad the actors didn’t appear personally (due to work schedule and COVID concerns), it was still a very entertaining show.

Executive producers Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter had planned to do something like this for a while, and found the best project when they hired Neicy. Nathan joked that the harder she works, the less he has to work, but she says her character is her own thing that will does things her own way. It was proven in her two episodes from last season, “Simone” and “Enervo”.

The show will also delve into her relationship with her dad. He was jailed for a crime he didn’t commit, and he’s not happy with the idea of Simone being part of the FBI. She hopes to convince him she’ll make a difference this way.
Still, Niecy says Simone will be busy trying to figure things out in her situation, and the most of it.

Both shows have finished their first three shows of the new season. John Nolan (Nathan) will still be a rookie, but among training officers. While he helped out a deputy at the end of last season, his first rookie will be a woman (no word on who it’ll be). He says it shouldn’t affect his relationship with Bailey.

There’s also the relationship between Officers Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Bradford (Eric Winter). They actually share a kiss, and wonder what’s next.

The producers also say the plots will keep up to date with current issues related to the law. The spinoff will take on cases in L.A. but also across the country. It’s also likely several crossovers will be planned.

Both stars ended the panel with some good advice. Niecy says that “you can accomplish whatever you want to accomplish, and it doesn’t matter if you have to do a hard reset, and that to always trust yourself.”
As for Nathan, “If you are unhappy, take charge and make that change.”
That’s what their shows are about, aside from the crime fighting.

Both shows are expected to start in late September on ABC.

Star Trek Universe Virtual Panel

One of the first “mega” entertainment panels to release during the flagship Comic-Con@Home weekend was the Star Trek Universe panel on Thursday, July 23rd. This was definitely a Hall H type outing, with the hour long panel, moderated by Deadline Hollywood’s Dominic Patten, covering four current and upcoming Star Trek shows for the CBS All-Access streaming channel.

After a short interview/introduction with Star Trek Universe Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kaden, cast and producers from three of the five upcoming Star Trek shows staged virtual mini-panels. Star Trek: Discovery kicked things off with a live “table” read of act one of the season 2 finale (“Such Sweet Sorrow” Part 2) and a follow-up Q&A with the cast with EP Michelle Paradise moderating. Next up is the Q&A with the cast and creator of the new animated comedic series, Star Trek: Lower Decks. Capping off the hour is a Q&A with the cast of Star Trek: Picard, coming off of their season one finale.

Moderator Dominic Patten (Deadline) opens with Alex Kurtzman (EP) and Heather Kaden (EP). They discuss the expansion of Star Trek universe with a few new shows:

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds where iconic STU characters are coming back with their own series. The writers room has started for the show and there are 10 stories plotted.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will include Anson Mount (Captain Christopher Pike), Rebecca Romijn (Number One), and Ethan Peck (Spock) in the cast.
  • In addition to ST: Lower Decks, there is a new animated series for kids on Nickelodeon from the Hageman brothers to introduce kids to the ST brand. The show will be called Star Trek: Prodigy.

************************************************************************

The Star Trek: Discovery portion of the panel (starts at the 5:25 mark).

Co-showrunner, Michelle Paradise, introduces cast members Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, Mary Chieffo, Tig Notaro, Alan Van Sprang, Jayne Brook, Emily Coutts, Oyin Oladejo, Patrick Kwok-Choon, Ronnie Rowe Jr., Sara Mitich, and upcoming Star Trek: Strange New World stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, and Ethan Peck and executive producer, Olatunde Osunsanmi, who also directed the season two finale and acts as narrator for the live read. Osunsanmi and Paradise also pick up the slack on voicing characters whose actors are not on the panel.

Highlights:

  • ST: Discovery table read is to support the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. Donate at naacpldf.org/StarTrekUnited.
  • The live reading of act one from the finale of S2 includes some storyboard artwork and computer graphics over the live reading. There is also some special sound effects and background music that enhances the read.
  • Short follow-up Q&A with ST:Discovery cast is moderated by Michelle Paradise EP (starts at 28:46).
  • The cast discuss Star Trek and its topical cultural and political stances past, present and future and what they find most compelling or impactful for each of them as individuals.
  • Olatunde Osunsanmi talks about the most profound scene to direct in the season finale — the last scene where we see Spock thinking about his sister, Michael, and how it ties us back into the timeline.
  • Sonequa Martin-Green talks about what may happen in season 3 after Michael Burnham’s heroic leap into the future in the season 2 finale.
  • Doug Jones (our Whedonopolis fan favorite) talks about what Commander Saru did for his people (Kelpians) in season 2 and what that means for him and Kelpians going forward.
  • Michelle Yeoh points out that Georgiou is a survivor and will handle whatever season 3 has in store for her. “[Going] Into season 3, I think she’s really pissed off! It’s like, Michael Burnham, don’t get in my way!” she quips. She’s been torn from her world for the second time but she will handle it.
  • Ethan Peck discusses how Michael Burnham gives Spock permission to be human and teaches him how to be human which is essential to the development of Spock.
  • Wilson Cruz states that Culber’s choices in S2 led to him saving Stamets’s life and looks at how that will impact their relationship. He is also looking forward to Culber’s new role in the area of mental health. He feels Culber is a more 3 dimensional person now.
  • Anson Mount reacts to seeing what the future holds for Captain Pike. “When you see how it’s all going to end, and it’s not so pretty, what do you do with that?” he explains. “I think he’s going to wrestle with how he can best utilize the rest of his life for the good, for the world, for the universe.”

If you would like to see the full table read of the episode, “Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2,” it will be available at CBS.com/StarTrekDiscovery. The Discovery crew will return for another season on CBS All Access.

Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery premieres October 15th on CBS All Access with 13 new episodes.

Star Trek: Lower Decks Virtual Panel starts just after the 45:00 mark.

Prepare to see another side of the Star Trek Universe in Star Trek: Lower Decks, the exciting, new, animated comedy series from creator/showrunner/EP Mike McMahan. Check out the trailer:

The year is 2380 and the series is set in the ST: The Next Generation (series) era and right after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis (movie) but before the events of Star Trek: Picard. The show revolves around the Starfleet crew that reside in the lower decks of the U.S.S. Cerritos. The ship’s crew is comprised of lower decks crew “Ensign Beckett Mariner” voiced by Tawny Newsome, “Ensign Brad Boimler” voiced by Jack Quaid, “Ensign Tendi” voiced by NoĂ«l Wells, and “Ensign Rutherford” voiced by Eugene Cordero and the ship’s bridge crew including “Captain Carol Freeman” voiced by Dawnn Lewis, “Commander Jack Ransom” voiced by Jerry O’Connell, “Lieutenant Shaxs” voiced by Fred Tatasciore, and “Doctor T’Ana: voiced by Gillian Vigman.

In this virtual panel, we get to see the faces behind the voices for the new ST animated comedy series.

Highlights:

Take a first look at a scene from Star Trek: Lower Decks.

  • Tawny Newsome explains that Ensign Beckett Mariner “doesn’t always play by the rules, even though she could because she’s good at things.” She compares her to someone “who is a class clown because you are ahead of the lesson in school.”
  • Beckett Mariner is the perfect foil for Jack Quaid’s Ensign Brad Boimler who always tries to play by the rules. “Ensign Brad Boimler is the ultimate Starfleet nerd. He’s like a complete fanboy for all the captains and the first officers — basically anyone who works on the bridge…” explains Jack Quaid.
  • Ensign Tendi is the newest member to join the lower decks folks on the U.S.S. Cerritos. “[She is] the fresh eyes on the Cerrittos,” explains NoĂ«l Wells. “She is excited by everything. She is unflappable. Even if there’s weird things happening, she turns it into this optimistic point-of-view.”
  • Eugene Cordero talks about Ensign Rutherford, who is a cyborg, engineer and team tech. “He’s the guy you want on your trivia team talking about every single ship that has ever been in the galaxy — or beyond!”
  • Gillian Vigman voices Dr. T’Ana who is the ship’s head medical officer (and who appears to be feline in origin). EP Mike McMahan sums it up with, “Dr. T’Ana — she might be great as solving space medical mysteries, but she’s also a scary, crusty alley cat — which is why we love her.”
  • Next we have Fred Tatsciore who voices the rough and tough, Lieutenant Shaxs. “He is a definite shoot first and ask questions later [Starfleet officier]!” He may not always be the best person when it comes to security (with all that shooting first), but he gets the job done.
  • Jack O’Connell notes immediately that his character, Commander Jack Ransom, has a short fuse. “I don’t think he’s the easiest person to work for, but… he does deeply care about Starfleet. He just does and says things that I’m not sure we could get away with on other Star Trek franchises.”
  • Dawnn Lewis voices the fearless leader of the U.S.S. Cerritos, Captain Carol Freeman. “It’s funny, as the captain, I never feel like I am confident and I never feel in command. I always feel like I’m just talking for talk’s sake and people are just gonna do what they’re gonna do anyway. But I take myself very, very seriously.”
  • Lewis continues, “And the Cerritos, in our mission to do “second contact” — which is almost more important than “first contact” because first contact, no one knows they’re there… second contact, we make sure things are running smoothly, things are running right…”

In the panel Q&A, the group discusses what befalls their characters in season one, what the most fun thing is about being in the Starfleet, and their favorite moments for their characters that they would like to share with the CC@Home audience. BUT be forewarned — spoiler mistakes were made… and then bleeped
most of the time. (But I’ll be honest, it makes me want to watch the show just to figure out what the heck they almost spoiled!)

This one piqued my interest. I will be watching.

Star Trek: Lower Decks premieres August 6th on CBS All Access and it looks like it’s going to be a really fun ride.

Star Trek: Picard Virtual Panel starts at 59:44.

Last, but not least, Dominic Patten, senior editor at entertainment new website “Deadline,” moderates a conversation with the cast of Star Trek: Picard. Included in the panel is Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard), Alison Pill (Dr. Agnes Jurati), Isa Briones (Dahj/Soji), Evan Evagora (Elnor), Michelle Hurd (Raffi Musiker), and Santiago Cabrera (Cristobal Rios) along with special guest stars Brent Spiner (Data/Dr. Soong), Jonathan Del Arco (Hugh), Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi)

Highlights:

Here is the portion of the video that is the Star Trek: Picard panel:

  • The show just completed airing its first season and it will be coming back for season 2.
  • When asked about how it felt to bring back the ST: Picard series, Sir Patrick Stewart explains that it didn’t feel like coming back but that they never really left.
  • Alison Pill came up with a new moniker for Sir Patrick Stewart, referring to him as “SPS.” But wait, there’s more! Sir Patrick, himself, prefers the moniker given to him by someone in Second City (comedy troupe) in Chicago, which is “P-Stew.” So pick your moniker and get trending, #SPS or #PStew.
  • Marina Sirtis teases Patrick Stewart about his challenges in learning (or re-learning) everybody’s name on set. She also admonished everyone for lavishing Sir Patrick with constant praise, “Stop it, just stop it! He’s going to be impossible to work with now!” “It took us years to train him!”
  • Cast members talk about why they were drawn to the project and about bringing returning characters and new characters to ST: Picard
  • Evan Evagora talks about his nervousness in meeting Sir Patrick and how helpful other cast/crew members, especially Jonathan Frakes, were in making him feel more comfortable bringing a new character into this world.
  • Isa Briones discussed the challenges of playing multiple characters in the show — make-up changes, playing against yourself in a scene, etc. She notes that when she was auditioning, she did not know it was for multiple characters.
  • Santiago Cabrera is asked about his character, Cristobal Rios, being the foil to Patrick Stewart’s rigid, strict and by-the-book Jean Luc Picard. Cabrera says that as you see their differences, over time, you start to see their similarities.
  • Jeri Ryan, Brent Spiner and Mirina Sirtis talk about bringing back their characters from the original Picard series — fan reaction, how it was returning to set, etc.
  • Brent Spiner is also creating a new character in addition to his previous one, Data. He talks about how that was a particular draw for him to join the show. He also took a certain delight in mentioning some weeping from producers and even from Patrick Stewart, in asking him to return.
  • Jonathan Del Arco discusses taking the adolescent character, Hugh, that he was in the first Picard series to the new series as an adult. He is surprised at the audience’s embracing of this role.
  • Sir Patrick Stewart is asked how he feels about his decision to return to the role of Picard now that the first season is done. “I made the right decision.” He goes on to say that the writers wanted “not just to revive Next Generation but to illustrate the years that had passed and that the world has changed. And that’s what excited me.”

Star Trek: Picard is available on CBS All Access. We hope to see season 2 in 2021!

The Boys Virtual Panel

Ahead of their season two premiere this fall, Executive Producer Eric Kripke and the cast of the Amazon Prime Video series The Boys met online with moderator, Aisha Tyler, to talk about what is in store for our Vought Superhero team of “The Seven” and our ragtag, not-so-super hero team of “The Boys” — the guys who have a major hate-on for Supes.

Aisha Tyler moderates the panel with showrunner Eric Kripke and cast members Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, and newest addition, Aya Cash.

Highlights:

  • Eric Kripke tells us that season 2 begins with The Boys, who are now wanted fugitives and being hunted. Homelander is out of control since Stillwell is no longer around to keep him in check (and we all know what “under control” looked like, so fasten your seat belts).
  • Kripke also promises to tackle some topical issues, “We’re going after white supremacy, we’re going after nationalism
going after systemic racism in season two.”
  • They show a clip featuring the team being chased by The Deep (who is riding a whale) and various scary ocean creatures. And, as expected, it ends bloody.

Take a look here:

  • Jack Quaid says that everybody gave him a hard time for complaining about being covered in blood in so much of the first season. But after the scene with the whale on the beach, nobody is saying anything anymore. “They all understand now!” he quips.
  • Karl Urban says that with the season one finale reveal, Butcher’s whole world experienced a paradigm shift. Where he spent the first season seeking revenge, now his objective is finding his wife and saving her. But how far is he willing to go to do that? And how will it affect his relationship with The Boys? And what about his wife’s “supe” baby daddy?
  • Anthony Starr talks about how Homelander is desperate for human connection but is so damaged that he is unable to forge those kinds of bonds. He continues, “
and that’s the duality of the character
The strongest – physically – man on the show, is the weakest — emotionally — on the show, in my opinion.”
  • Jack Quaid explains that Hughie is starting season 2 feeling very alone – Butcher has abandoned him to pursue his quest to find his wife. Hughie has tremendous guilt for lying to Annie (Starlight) in the beginning of their relationship and is now isolated from her (not to mention, he is on the run). In season one, Hughie latched on to other people’s quests and purpose. In season 2 he is beginning to find himself and stand on his own two feet and starting to understand what he wants and his own purpose.
  • Erin Moriarty talks about Annie/Starlight stepping into her own power in season 2 and how she has to adapt to the darker world of The Seven. She also talks about Annie dealing with the residual effects of having her heart broken by Hughie.
  • Jessie T. Usher and Erin Moriarty talk about the awkward relationship between A-Train and Starlight after the events of the end of season one. A-Train doesn’t know what Starlight is capable of and Starlight doesn’t know how much A-Train knows or remembers about their encounter that led to his heart attack.
  • Jessie T. Usher says that Compound V has taken its toll on A-Train’s body. He also feels betrayed or hated by everyone and is very insecure about his position in The Seven. In season one, Hughie was the biggest thorn in his side and someone A-Train can blame for everything wrong in his life. In season two, he transfers that focus and blame to someone else
but who?
  • When asked how Mother’s Milk would handle balancing his loyalty to “The Boys” and his own goals and his family, Laz Alonso explains that in this universe, Mother’s Milk seems to be addicted to the fight for freedom. The character was created around the idea of “crack babies” in the 80’s who were born addicted to drugs through the infusion of their mother’s or father’s drug use into their system while in the womb. Mother’s Milk was born with Compound V in his blood because of his mother’s/family’s exposure in sweat factories. His addictive nature is manifested in his need to fight for justice no matter the circumstances. He is also the moral compass of The Boys and tries to keep them from crossing too many questionable lines.
  • Chace Crawford talks about how The Deep’s exile from “The Seven” is sending him on a personal quest to find out who he really is. He still wants to get back into The Seven, but he also wants to understand more about himself, find love and find connection. He teases that someone from The Deep’s past joins him this season.
  • We find out more about The Female’s (Kumiko’s) past and (maybe) why she doesn’t speak. Karen Fukuhara points out that while it is nice to not have to learn lines, it is also a challenge as an actor. We dive into The Female’s psyche and emotional state more than her physical side this season. But there is still grueling stuntwork. She has high praise for the trainers and stunt team. She is very excited about an upcoming stunt they dubbed “The Black Widow Stunt” and they got it on camera with her doing it!
  • Talking about The Female/Kumiko naturally leads to talking about Frenchie, played by Tomer Capon, who spent a lot of season one trying to save and connect with Kumiko. His focus on Kumiko was immediate and continues into season two, but as Kumiko develops emotionally and within her own psyche, it becomes necessary for Frenchie to give her space. They may have to separate for each of them to grow individually. Capon states that Frenchie has a lot of past trauma and he must deal with it.
  • Season two Introduces Aya Cash who plays “Stormfront,” the newest member of The Seven.

Meet “Stormfront,” newest member of Vought’s “The Seven” here:

  • With Stormfront, Homelander has met his match! She has social media savvy but it becomes clear that there is more going on beneath the surface of what we see (or what she shows us). Stormfront is as intense and off her rocker as Homelander.
  • Aisha Tyler (moderator) states that Stormfront is not like any other female character we have seen on the show. She tells Eric Kripke that what he does beautifully is that “you make people so complex and so likable and then you kind of exploit all of our loyalties.” Now what does that mean for Stormfront??
  • Aya Cash points out that The Boys is very topical and she loves that it gives people the space to step back and observe these current cultural events at a distance and through a fantasy lens. It allows people to listen and learn better because everything is out of their personal context. “Not that there weren’t moments of
being a human being
and playing the role of someone who I ultimately, violently disagree with” she admits.
  • Eric Kripke states that at the show’s core is the idea that “power doesn’t actually corrupt you, it just reveals the thing you have always been.”

EPs Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg join the panel at the end of the episode for an announcement. The Boys, even before the release of the second season, has been renewed for a third season!

But wait! There’s more! Aisha Tyler announces that there will be a brand new “after show” for The Boys as well. The show is called Prime Rewind: Inside The Boys and will be hosted by none other than, Aisha Tyler. The show will be available each week along with the episodes of the show.

The new season of The Boys drops on Amazon Prime Video on September 4th, 2020 with the first 3 episodes. Thereafter, there will a new episode each week until the October 9th finale.

The Comic Con Panel Blurb

Executive producer Eric Kripke, along with series stars Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Tomer Capon, Karen Fukuhara, and Aya Cash, with moderator Aisha Tyler, gather for a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming second season of The Boys. Executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will also make a special appearance. Based on The New York Times best-selling comic by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys is a fun and irreverent take on what happens when superheroes – who are as popular as celebrities – abuse their superpowers rather than use them for good. The even more intense, more insane season two finds The Boys on the run from the law, hunted by the Supes, and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought.

Pandora Virtual Panel

Unboxing Pandora Season Two on The CW This Fall

Moderator Scott Mantz talks with executive producers Mark A. Altman, Thomas Vitale, and Steve Kriozere along with series stars Priscilla Quintana, Ben Radcliffe and Oliver Dench about what lies ahead for our intrepid trio in the upcoming sophomore season of Pandora. The lively discussion touched on everything from on-set pranks (and off-set food fights) to how to develop an alien accent to the hazardous learning curve involved in stunt choreography. One thing is clear, though, this is a group that works hard but has fun.

Highlights:

  • Ben Radcliffe (“Ralen”), throughout season one, had to come in a couple hours early everyday for his prosthetic make-up. At end of shoot, he turned the tables on the make-up artist and made them up in and alien character.
  • EP Thomas Vitale talks about the experience of shooting in Sofia, Bulgaria, where they will also shoot season 2. He notes that there are landscapes, classic buildings never seen on American television.
  • Priscilla Quintana jokes that she is totally Team Jax/Ralen (Jalen? JaxLen? Rax?) and threatens to quit if the writers have Jax fall for Xander instead.
  • Priscilla talks about the challenges of working on set with cast and crew speaking multiple languages — lots of charades to communicate!
  • Oliver Dench talks about the fast pace of shooting a new series makes it necessary to trust the people around you, especially the writers and other actors. You’re creating your character as you go along!
  • Ben Radcliffe’s biggest challenge in S1 was how to create an alien persona – voice, movement, etc. He developed Ralen’s accent by combining a bit of Alan Rickman’s “Snape” from Harry Potter and the Swedish accent of YouTuber PewDiePie. He didn’t have time to teach the other actors playing his fellow alien, Zatarians, the accent, though. Mark Altman jokes that their accent is “North Zatar.”
  • Priscilla feels that they hit their stride in season 1 around episode 5. Oliver feels the group hit their stride as a team early on. He explains that pacing is different for becoming comfortable with your fellow actors and becoming comfortable with your character.
  • Priscilla shares a video of a bonding moment when they were relaxing in an outdoor jacuzzi and it began to hail. Pelted with hail while in a jacuzzi! Good times!
  • There were food fights!
  • Priscilla is REALLY Team Ralen (did we mention that already?). In mid shooting season, she approached EP, Mark Altman, and pleaded the case for Jax and Ralen to be a couple. She showed him social media talk about different ships for Jax. It prompted a fight with Oliver, in character, for Jax to end up with Ralen.
  • Priscilla talks about stunt work – apologies to Ben Radcliffe for punching him in the head more than once, apparently – but mistakes happen! “Ben has an advantage in his stunt work because he is a dancer
for me, dancing is awkward, like a dolphin using chopsticks
” says Quintana. Hmmm, interesting imagery. She promises that season two will be better. “We’ll be pros.” Ben looks skeptical.
  • First season, EP Mark Altman started the rumor that there would be a musical episode, much to the horror of the cast. He insists that he still wants to do it, but there were rumbles of mutiny starting with Priscilla.
  • Altman points out that the ability of Priscilla, Ben and Oliver to pick up stunt work so quickly enabled them to add more action scenes to first season. He promises season two will definitely ramp up the action and fight scenes.
  • Oliver Dench relays the hilarious horror of making a smart aleck remark to Ben Radcliffe and having Ben Cross think it was meant for him. A moment he won’t seen forget.
  • EP Tom Vitale explains that season two will take advantage of the camaraderie we see between the three actors on the panel.
  • Mark Altman tells us that season two will begin with a time jump that is a couple months after the season one finale. There is a new ship, “The Dauntless!” The ship set, with a new bridge, was almost completed before the pandemic shutdown. (Oliver is thrilled that his character has a new office.) There will be a lot more adventures in space, but there will still be some stories back at the school.
  • Soundtrack for Season 1 is available now on La-La Land Records
  • The show recently premiered in the UK. It is now available in Germany!

Pandora returns to The CW for its second season this Fall 2020.

The Comic-Con@Home blurb:

The cast and crew of The CW’s hit sci-fi series previews the show’s exciting second season debuting this fall. Join cast members Priscilla Quintana (“Jax”), Oliver Dench (“Xander”), and Ben Radcliffe (“Ralen”) along with executive producers Mark A. Altman (The Librarians, Agent X), Steve Kriozere (NCIS, Castle), and Thomas P. Vitale (Slasher) along with moderator Scott “Movie” Mantz as they look back at the first season and share a special sneak peek of the new season as Jax learns whether she’ll be the savior of our universe or its destruction. They talked about the first season, and speculated on what's next.

Last year, Cobie Smulders traded her SHIELD badge for a P.I.’s license in Portland, starring in ABC’s Stumptown. She played a former vet with PTSD and a car with a quirky cassette player, solving crimes and taking care of her brother.

The show will be back on Wednesdays next season, although production has been delayed due to the coronavirus. Smulders was joined by the showrunner and her co-stars Jake Johnson and Michael Ealy in a panel for Comic-Con@Home.

The show also welcomes Monica Breen, fresh from being a producer at Agents of SHIELD. She says she liked the action and the use of music, but the characters were the best. “They did good things,” she says, “but they weren’t super-heroes. They weren’t perfect, their lives were messy, their relationships were messy, their romances, like there was something so funny to me about…there was no ‘will they, won’t they’ (about Dex and Grey), they did, now what?” Breen called it “adult fun” that makes it different from other dramas.

Smulders described Dex’s first season as facing her past. “At the beginning, she’s covering herself,” she says, “She’s protecting herself, and so throughout the season it was really fun to play her slowly aknowledging all of these faults of the past that she really needs to fix to move forward.”
She’s also pleased the show had Dex meet other vets who have had the same experiences.

Greg Rucka, who wrote the graphic novel that inspired the show, and showrunner Jason Richman, also discussed at great length about how they developed Dex and brought some of her character from the graphic novel to the series. Richman was interested in why she wanted to be a private investigator. “I was really interested in a character who was kind of lost, and would get into something, and not looking it as a career,” he says, “but it was sort of the culmination of the good and bad things that she’d done in her entire life, all the interactions, all the damage and everything wrapped up into one, it’s sort of the only thing that she could possibly do with all those things.” The show does an interesting job showing Dex getting her license, and finding a place to do business.
However, it treats Dex’s bisexuality as no big deal. Smulders says Dex is someone who’s up for anything. “To me it’s just felt like this is who this person is, and it was a really cool thing to explore and play out,” she says.

The show featured a triangle between Dex, Grey (Johnson) and Miles (Ealy), but Johnson doesn’t think he’s in a triangle. “In the scenes we were doing,” he says, “didn’t feel very ‘love triangle’. It felt to me that Grey and Dex were friends, and there’ll always something between people who were really connected, but it didn’t feel as present as the scenes with Dex and Miles in terms of their romance.” Johnson also points out Grey and Miles actually get along, as two romantic rivals usually don’t.

Soon, Dex will have a bigger problem: the return of her mom after 12 years (thanks to Ansel calling her). Not much was revealed about that in the panel, but they’re still discussing how that will be part of season two, and who will be playing that part.

The post Comic-Con@Home Panel Review: Conversation With Nathan Fillion appeared first on Six Degrees of Geek.

This has been one of the most popular and reviewed panels at Comic-Con@Home.

It may have been a conversation with Nathan Fillion, but other people dropped by including Joss Whedon, Firefly co-stars Gina Torres and Alan Tudyk, The Rookie showrunner Alexi Hawley and co-star Meika Cox, and Molly Quinn, Seamus Dever and Jon Huertas from Castle.

The conversations also discuss other things. For example, Whedon revealed he offered Dr. Horrible to Jeff Bezos and Amazon Prime Video before Whedon released it himself and basically changed entertainment as we know it. Fillion says that Hollywood big shots didn’t think the internet would be accepted as a source of entertainment.
Then you see this year’s Emmys, and how the internet has a big chunk of the nominations.

The panel actually started with a role not many people think about: the doctor who falls with Keri Russell in Waitress. He especially talked about Adrienne Shelley’s style of directing. He called it “reality, but odd”, but it still resonated with a lot of people and eventually wound up in Broadway.

Torres, Tudyk and Fillion talked a lot about Firefly, but she had the best comment about the show: “It’s like any great book that touched you when you were…when you read it maybe you were 15, and then you revisit it when you were 25, and it says different things to you.”

Also, Hawley and Whedon had some interesting comments about making TV, like how making episodes are really like making bedtime stories.

The post Comic-Con@Home Panel Review: Science and Agents of SHIELD appeared first on Six Degrees of Geek.

]]>

The final season of Agents of SHIELD has been one wild time-traveling ride that would rival TimeLord adventure or what the Avengers had to do in Endgame last year.

Comic-Con@Home, with help from the Fleet Science Ceter, featured a special panel on how the show handled time travel, time streams and the like. It included producer Jeffrey Bell, and actors Elizabeth Henstridge and Joel Stoffer (just after his rave performance in “As I Have Always Been”).

Everyone talked about how great it was to write and produce the show, and sometimes incorporate a cool science article into a plot. “That allows you to address character things in a way that other people can’t,” writer James Oliver says. “A lot of people can write about a couple having an argument, we get to put that couple inside of an alien computer where their thoughts become real and stab you in the face.”
Yes, that was from last season.

Bell also points out the cast of characters have changed a lot (just compare FitzSimmons or even Daisy from season one to now), and how it’s important to keep those arcs grounded. They also talk about how Henstridge tries to use scientific jargon as if it’s something anyone knows.
She says it’s how you say it in British, and that she’s in a family of scientists. “My stunts were the scientific jargon,” she says (although Jemma has handled at least one big gun), “and often times in the beginning FitzSimmons, which I am part of that double act, were kind of moving the story along explaining the problem and later explaining the solution which were both science-based. It was really fun because you get, as an actor, you get to play the distress and the discovery and then the discovery of the solution that’s really exciting. There’s something infectious about a character that’s so passionate about something, and believes in something.” In this case, Jemma Simmons is all about science.
By the way, her family did push medicine on her, but decided on drama instead. She’s still able to inspire a lot of young women to take up science.

There was also a discussion about the Inhumans on the show. Oliver says it’s a challenge how to make sure someone like Daisy or Elena win a fight but not always the same way. They had to learn that when their powers were on hold this season.
The panel also talked about genetic engineering and it’s not too different from computer programming, and also how mutant mice plays a role in that. It also discussed whether the Mainframe virtual reality could happen.

Stoffer also talked about how he got into his role as Enoch, who’s been around since season five. “I remember in episode 4.22, the director was Billy Gierhart, I said ‘tell me’, and he went like this (showing a tightly closed hand),” he said. “In season five, episode five, the word that stuck out for me that helped me the most was ‘sentient’. There’s a sense of feeling in this guy, but clearly, you know, there’s no human emotion there. I think what it was is that I, as an actor, would have an emotional response, because I was an observer, as a Chronicom, I would always turn that into curiosity and being intrigued.”

The panel is available below, but all Comic-Con@Home panels can be found at https://www.youtube.com/user/ComicCon/featured

The cast of the new ABC series Stumptown were in fine form at San Diego Comic Con this year. The Stumptown gang, creator Greg Rucka, exec producer David Bernad, and cast Cobie Smulders, Camryn Manheim, Michael Ealy, Jake Johnson, Cole Sibus, Tantoo Cardinal and Adrian Martinez were on hand to talk about life, love, family, war, PTSD, sexual fluidity, special needs, keeping secrets and “what’s in a name.”

Stumptown refers to the nickname for Portland, Oregon where the show is set. Cobie Smulders plays an army veteran, Dex, who becomes a private investigator in “Stumptown,” much to the consternation of the local police department (Camryn Manheim and Michael Ealy). Jake Johnson plays Grey, a local bartender and friend to Dex and her brother, Ansel (played by Cole Sibus). Tantoo Cardinal is the tough as nails owner/manager of the casino on the local Native American reservation. Adrian Martinez plays the mysterious, Tookie, and that’s about all I know — I was kind of afraid to ask more (he may have had to kill me).

Check out our round table interviews with this lively and fun cast.

Executive Producer, David Bernad and series star, Cobie Smulders (Dex Parios).

Camryn Manheim stars as Lt. Bobby Cosgrove and Michael Ealy is Detective Miles Hoffman (who also has some steamy scenes with P.I. Dex).

Jake Johnson (Grey McConnell) and Cole Sibus (Ansel Parios) talk about winning Academy Awards, representing people with special needs, how they each got into acting, and all around fun on the set.

Comic book and series creator of Stumptown, Greg Rucka, is with show co-stars Adrian Martinez and Tantoo Cardinal. Rucka talks about bringing his comic book characters to life onscreen.

Stumptown premieres this fall on ABC.

The post Comic-Con Recap: Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD – SDCC appeared first on Six Degrees of Geek.

]]>
The first day of San Diego Comic-Con opened with word that Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will end its run next year…and that it’s filming its final episode ever later this month

The entire cast spent much of their Thursday afternoon panel looking back at the past six years, and preparing to say goodbye when season seven airs sometime next year. Fans saw short summaries of the first five seasons, while the actors recalled specific moments.

Clark Gregg, who started the show as Agent Phil Coulson just after he temporarily died in The Avengers, says that first season, like T.A.H.I.T.I., was a magical place. “This has been such an incredible journey,” he said, “that only happened because when I stepped up on this stage with the cast from The Avengers in 2010, I think. Not long after that, I was dead. A really nice guy I just met up in the green room, named (Joss) Whedon, called me a little later and said ‘we think you might be so dead’

“They have taken us on this incredible ride that has changed our lives”, he continued, and paid tribute to other actors like the late Ron Glass, Bill Paxton, and Brett Dalton (played Grant Ward). He paid tribute to those who spread the hashtag “#CoulsonLives” through social media, and brought him back to live.

Co-showrunner Jed Whedon looked back at the early days and how it continued over the years. “Those early days, none of us knew each other,” he explained, “We were, as Clark said, finding our footing and I was sort of the foundation that all this was built on. Every week, we were kind of had to make a mini-movie, and spent a lot of hours together and some of the beginning of our friendships and life-long friendships.”

His fellow showrunner and wife, Maurissa Tanchareon, said that when they had their last table read ever, it included call sheets from the first episode. “We always talk about how, when we were shooting the pilot,” she said, “we never imagined, every time we were here, we never imagined getting a season four, a season five, a season six, and now a season seven. Now it’s really hard to believe that we’re at the end.” She went on to praise the cast, writers, producers and the fans.

From there, the cast looked back at certain moments including those who joined and then left. They talked how Chloe Bennett changed when she became an Inhuman, one of the classic moments from season two. She recalled how she had to change emotions several times in that moment when Daisy’s powers emerged but then- agent Tripp died.

Gregg praised producer Jeff Bell for being the “ballast” for the show, while Ming-Na Wen also recalled how Melinda May was called the “Cavalry” over a mission she’d rather forget. Still, she was also grateful to her staff and the fans. “It is such a family, it really is,” she said, “and it’s so miraculous when I look back, and so crazy to have like all those years like happen and snippets of seconds, but it brings back a lot of memories.”

It’s interesting the panel is happening just as the final episode is being shot right now, and Whedon is quite aware of the mix of emotions. “Part of the reason that we’re really enjoying this is that we are going through what the characters are going through. This is our last mission together,” he said.

They talked about how Iain De Caestecker showed his dark side as Evil Leo Fitz in the Framework, and how Elizabeth Henstridge was a little excited by it. She talked about how Jemma was stranded in a planet for a while in season three, and what is was like to be away from everyone for an episode.
Henry Simmons talked about how he joined the show, and that it was an emotional moment because Mack was coming in while Lance Hunter and Bobbie Morse left for a spinoff that never happened. He said he was close to Nick Blood and Adrienne Palicki, and that he would miss them. He seemed unsurprised, though, that he’d go from mechanic to SHIELD Director. He was a little worried about job security, though. “Before they ‘kill’ you,” he said, “they call you in and say ‘we need to talk’. Jeff Bell and Jed were walking down the lot. They’re like ‘Henry’. I ran.”

Of course, he has stayed ever since.

They talked about other scenes, such as when Elena (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) had to convince Mack that his daughter is not alive, and that it’s all an illusion in the Framework back in season four.

One of the more interesting stories is how Jeff Ward became a regular as Deke Shaw. He was originally playing someone else who gets killed quickly. However, it took an incredible table read to change his fate. “Jeff came in,” Bennett says, “was this one character that died, and I never heard a table read, no one ever reacted like that. He came in and just stole the part. Immediately you just wanted more of him and he’s been such a wonderful addition.”

Ward went on to explain that he didn’t think Deke would survive past “Past Life”, and that he was shown a wall of actors whose characters also perished on the show. However, he later found out he would be staying after all.

“Everybody took me in a way that they didn’t really have to,” he said, “and when you’re coming on to a show that already exists it doesn’t usually work out that way. So to be taken in by this family in that way, and now two and a half years later, I love all these people very very much.”

Ming says she’s just happy that Jeff has the biggest laugh now instead of her.

Finally, Gregg talked about how he said goodbye to Phil Coulson and maybe the MCU, and that it was pretty emotional. That is, until he returned into a different guy named Sarge.

The panel ended with a two-minute trailer for the final four episodes, and we can say Izel plays a big part that could also be pretty destructive. As for how last week ended, it’s definitely not the end. Here’s a look:

We got the opportunity to attend The Walking Dead press conference at San Diego Comic-Con attended by Andrew Lincoln, Danai Gurira, Lauren Cohen, Jeffery Dean Morgan, Norman Reedus, and executive producers Scott Gimple, Greg Nicotero, and Angela Kang.

The big announcement that Andrew Lincoln would be leaving the show was the big news from the panel but there were also some other great questions brought up during the press conference that are listed below:

Question: Is there a way for a character leaving this world … without them being killed off?

Andrew Lincoln: Well, I think Lenny James is a perfect example of leaving without dying and doing rather well on it. I just saw him about five minutes ago and he looks incredibly healthy. And then there is obviously the other way, which we’ve done quite a lot. And obviously I’m not gonna tell you which way … I mean, I prefer the Lenny James of it all. But, I think what we have in store this season is truly remarkable and I’m very, very proud of the work we’ve done.

Question: Did you get emotional saying goodbye to your character?

Andrew Lincoln: At the end of the panel, it sort of hit me a little bit. I got kind of choked up, and it’s been … Yeah, it’s been nine years of coming here, and I love this place, and I love seeing the fans, and you’ve been such a vital part of this experience. But, you know, as I said, my relationship with Mr. Grimes is far from over.

Greg Nicotero: I will also say that the level of commitment from the actors … there was a particular scene that Andy and Norman shot together and they rehearsed it over and over again, they spent so much time because we have these great opportunities to put these characters together that have great chemistry that we want to see where their relationships are going. This season so far, we’ve really had the opportunity to explore that. So, we’re always on the phone talking about scenes and what do you think about this line and how about this and I love where this is going to go. It feels like the level of collaboration, the level of dedication when these guys … I would walk past our screening room and him and Norman would be in there working on a scene and then it wasn’t shoot for a week but they were just really wanting it to be great. I mean that was amazing to me, to know that still after nine years, these guys care, they wanted it to be great. They want it to be great for you.

Andrew Lincoln: I will say Norman, when he’s not here, I’ll compliment him. He is a truly amazing, instinctive, brilliant actor. He’s kind of … I came to America to work with actors like him and he is like the Paul Newman, that I will never be. He’s the Steve McQueen. The work that he’s doing this season, along with Danai, Jeffrey and all the rest of it and Elyse and the gang. It was privilege, I got to do scenes with all of my favorite people this season and as a farewell, it was the greatest present I could have got and particularly working with Norman was a real thrill. On the back of what Greg said-

Scott Gimple: Oh, he’s here-

Andrew Lincoln: He’s here? He’s a piece of shit and I’ve never liked him.

Question: When Michonne is reading the letter that Carl wrote, when you were performing that scene what did you imagine was in the letter?

Danai Gurira: Well, my letter from Carl to me… I had actually had written what I believe he would have written me. So I was reading his words that I wrote… I wrote myself the letter. Like she wants Rick to have this personal moment with his letter. But it was … some of the things, it feels personal to share. I don’t know why. But some of the things that he definitely, you hear him saying to her in those final moments are more elaborated upon. Being the strength and remembering moments that he had with her that could keep him alive for her. Though she doesn’t need help with that but there are key moments that he mentions in the letter that, you know, like the moments of walking up to Terminus together and re-finding each other. And the things he feels she done for his dad and he needs her to be there for his dad in various ways.

So there are those, a whole lot of like that to fuel her ability to confront [Rick] and to make that connection again. To understand his son’s legacy lives on in that letter in the sense of his final words really being elaborated on. And leaving us both with the same vision of how to step in to the next phase, and us keeping Maggie alive. So I think there were things that paralleled in both letters [Rick and Michonne’s] that allowed us to come to the same place.

Question: Knowing that Rick was leaving at the beginning of this season, was there a bigger emphasis to balance out the bigger and bolder performances, in a sense? And things of that nature or was it sort of to honor Rick’s absence?

Andrew Lincoln: I mean they put us all on a horse which was quite informative. That was quite exciting. And I don’t really know, I think we were just telling a story and trying to tell the best story we possibly can and I’m really, as everybody has said, Angela has been extraordinary this season and I’ve loved this season so far. And love working with all of my buddies. And as people have mentioned already, it’s a big collaboration. It feels free again. It’s opened up the story and the performances are more nuanced, I think because of this time jump. It’s been really exciting jumping two years and then having this history, this fractured, sort of fragmented peace. I don’t think there’s any desire to try and make it anything but telling the best story possible and to continue exploring.

Danai Gurira: I think the best way to honor Rick and Andy is to stay true to telling a really honest story and not to go some big bold place that’s out of the realm of that tone that we’ve been trying to connect to since … you know, he set the tone in the pilot. So I think definitely the thing that was so exciting about what Angela’s brought, as Andy’s mentioned, is the fact that we were able to do that… To find those sort of connections through characters being connected in very different ways this year then we’ve experienced in the past. And go to that very key example that he and Lenny set in that first episode.

Question: Do you think Negan would be rehabilitated? Like is there any way he could function within this society based on his own personality, based on how others feel about him?

Jeffery Dean Morgan: I can’t say that we have shot anything yet but, I think there is. We’re going to find out quickly as season nine starts. And there’s been a big time jump, and we’re trying to figure out, I don’t know how to phrase it, the position he’s in. And I’ve been given the chance, Negan’s given the chance, to kind of get rid of some people, people on the stage here…Which is kind of thrill for me. And I think we’ll see a different side of him as the season goes on. Now is that a good thing or a bad thing? I don’t know. But I think there’s redemption to be had for Negan.

Question: With Andrew leaving, are you all taking on a larger role? Picking up for someone like Rick?

Norman Reedus: When people, like Danai said, can stay true to Andy and to Rick, would tell you the true story. The truth. We’ve had a season or two of chest bumping. Two guys chest bumping and shooting each other but nobody really killing each other. You know what I mean? And the conflicts with that. This is a very …female driven season right now. And it’s nice to have that happen. The stories are told in different ways. Less bravado and more real depth. It’s like shooting a western with feeling. It’s well in the season, but I don’t know if … and you can’t take Ricks place on the show. That’s kind of impossible. Everybody’s branching out from doing different things but there’s always…

Danai Gurira:

Question: Filming the season 8 finale, what were your thoughts knowing that your characters are going to turn on Rick?

Greg Nicotero: You’ve got to remember where we left Maggie in the last season. You know, they made a deal in the beginning of the finale that Negan was done. They were going to kill him. So when Rick spared his life, and Maggie broke down, she broke down because all the shared emotion of everything that he had done to Glenn and he had done to everybody around them. All the pain that Negan had inflicted on everyone. So Maggie felt betrayed. So that last scene when the camera’s sort of creeping in on her, and she’s kind of like listen, “I’m going to bide my time but that’s not what we agreed to. I’m not down with it.” And then of course Daryl steps out of the shadows and he’s like “I’m not down with that either.” If you look at season eight, Daryl was not a fan of Negan. In the trailer, Maggie relays to Rick one of those lines that we shot in the premiere last year, when Rick said “One of these days, I’m going to be following you”. And in the trailer we saw Maggie say, “you said you were going to follow me but you’re not. You’re not letting me do what I believe in.” They’re not at each others throats but they’re still not really down with the decisions that their friends make. They’re still friends, but they’re friends may not have made the smartest decisions.

Lauren Cohen: You know it’s interesting though because I fell like there’s so much tension as a result of that. It’s not all about them fighting each other in a pit with two sticks of whatever. It’s a lot of like, it’s more fraught because it’s people who love each other and it’s people who want to be on the same page but really, really aren’t. And it’s family. It’s family feud. So it’s actually much, in some ways, scarier. It feels much more volatile and dangerous.

Question: In the poster that was released at Comic Con, there were a lot fewer characters on it then the previous seasons. Is that any indication that the stories were too narrow to focus on these character relationships, especially with this news of Andy leaving the show? So are you going to have a lot more character development?

Angela Kang: Yeah, I think this season there are some really exciting opportunities to feature this core cast that has such deep relationships that we’ve seen develop over the years and that fans was really invested in and we’re invested in as storytellers. And there’s this kind of instant emotional history when you see any of these actors in a scene together. They’re really … this group is the group that is written up as the leaders of these communities. And so a lot of the story we’re talking about is how you rebuild civilization. Like how do you move on from war? And so we’re telling a lot of stories between these people because they are having some differences of opinions. You know, they still love each other. How do you move forward when you really, just fundamentally disagree about how certain things should happen? We have an amazing ensemble.

But you will see a lot more screen time for some of these relationships like Daryl and Carol, and Rick and Maggie, and Michonne and … it’s just really interesting triangulations that we just wanted to dive deep in to some of these relationships because there’s a lot of emotional weight to them.

Question: Can you guys talk about what is your favorite moment of Rick and Michonne’s relationship? And what can we look forward to in season nine?

Andrew Lincoln: It’s kind of interesting because we’ve had two years of peace since the end of the war and that has changed their dynamic, their relationship. And that was for me, some of my most satisfying scenes with Michonne have been this season. Just because they’re much deeper, more grounded than … it’s just in that new phase of a loving relationship. And there’s so much sort of knowledge of of one another in it.

I was going to say, I rarely get to be happy in a season. Once a season, I’ll drive home happy with the day’s work. But in the last two weeks of my filming, I drove happy four times. Which is just, I couldn’t believe it. It’s just stunning. And that’s because I got to do scenes with all of these guys here. And Melissa McBride. And a few other surprises. And it’s the reason I became an actor. I came to America to work with people like these people here. We don’t get actors like this in Europe. I’m not joking. These guys are … there’s an ambition. There’s a kind of desire to keep changing and keep pushing themselves which I’ve learned so much in the nine years that I’ve been working with people like these.

Yeah, I love this relationship [Rick and Michonne], Sarah Wayne Callies said that was the hardest thing for her and I’m realizing it now, is when you put the job down and your deep, loving, friendships stand. They continue but the characters relationships on screen, that’s the depth that you regret. And that’s the bit that I’m trying to … I’m in shock about. I’m sort of still numb. But yet there’s some great stuff we got to do.

Danai Gurira: I would say this, and I truly mean it and I say it to [Andy] as well. Though this is the only show I’ve worked on as a regular, I will say, I truly believe this is the best leading man on television. And I do believe that he has made us all better. His leadership, his character, his discipline, his heart, his generosity, his kindness, have really paved a path for all of us to understand how to carry on without him, even though it’s extremely painful to as he said, the death of the relationships that happen when Rick exits are very real but at the same time, he’s so equipped us to carry on…which is what a great leader does. So I just couldn’t be thankful enough for the time I’ve gotten to work with him and learn from him and understand him. And it’s been a true joy to get to explore my character’s growth. She grows basically in connection with him, really from the second she meets him. And you know, saves his ass a bunch. Because she can see the goodness, and the strength, and the power in this man. How he takes on, this is Rick and Michonne now, how he takes on what he has to take on from a place of understanding what he must do versus any sort of ego or pride and Michonne respects that so much. I love how nuanced we got to be, even more so in this season. Because of peace we could find more … a time of peace, we were able to find moments that we hadn’t really been able to explore before. I’m excited for you all to see that. Yeah, it’s all heartbreaking…as Walking Dead always is, but this is a special kind of heart break. It’s been an honor, sir.

Question: What was your most challenging moment? Like for instance, the season finale of season six, the beginning of season seven, it was just so emotional. I was going to ask you guys, what was your most challenging scene for each one of you individually?

Lauren Cohen: I think for me the most challenging was Glenn dying. Because it was so long. We had two whole episodes and the next season in the same emotional state and so in a lot of ways we were getting ready to wind down and take time so to sort of hold the space of that … and as actors and as people to hold the secret. Which is simultaneously one of the greatest things of this show, the secrets in this show are so sacred…the information is so desired and the story is so … people are so hungry for the story. I mean, Maggie was in such pain when that was happening and shock because of the physical and emotion of the whole thing. But that was also one of the best parts of the show. Going through those places. It’s very infrequent on television that you’re going to have these great theatrical tragedies, you know? So I say challenge but I also say a gift. The trust that we all have with each other is really special.

Norman Reedus: For me, it was this year. Episode four of this season was one that Andy and I had a scene that was a fucking effort but it was really well written and we worked on it and we really fine tuned it and got it to a place where it became sort of effortless. And it could have gone in so many different directions but I think both of us are really proud of that.

Danai Gurira: There are so many places I could go with that but it’s something I can’t really talk about, sorry. In terms of it being this season, but it’s interesting because in Georgia, you know, anywhere I guess, you’re dealing with weather. So I had this scene I had to shoot and I’m sitting up, I’m holding it, I’m holding it, I’m holding it. And they’re like you ready? They do one take it’s like, get rained out. It’s like we got it. It’s over. Okay. I’ll carry this through the weekend. And then Monday it’s like, oh it’s raining, we can’t do it. Okay. I hadn’t experienced that three times, a scene I had to do that required all of me like that in a very, very vulnerable way. I had to carry that through about six days and three different attempt that didn’t happen because of Georgia weather. So that was definitely challenging because I think when the scene was over, I remember this very weird physical response to having released it and that was a new, I was like, what is happening to me. I was thinking something was wrong with me. It was a different and challenging journey, but it was all for the story.

The cast and producers of The Purge mini-series talk about the challenge during San Diego Comic-Con.

The post SDCC 2018: The Purge Mini-Series Press Coverage appeared first on Six Degrees of Geek.

It’s not unusual when a popular movie franchise is turned into a TV show. It is, though, when a TV mini-series based on the latest movie will premiere just two months later.

The USA Network will present a ten-hour miniseries based on The Purge this fall. It will show several characters trying to survive the annual Purge, where all of America is allowed to commit crime, including murder, for 12 hours. During this series, the event is part of society because it’s in the Constitution. Several people will be featured, showing whether they want to participate in the Purge or fight it.

Some of the cast, and the producers, met with the press during San Diego Comic-Con. Brad Fuller, who co-produced The Purge: Anarchy, appeared with Lex Scott Davis, who played Nya in The First Purge.
Fuller says that when the Purge is part of life in this series, people have to make a choice. “There are good people in the TV show,” he says, “who find themselves tantalized by the Purge and how they can help their life, and you get to see the toll that it takes on their lives.”
Davis reprises her role as Nya, an activist who is against the Purge but has to be part of it to save who she can.

Fiona Dourif, who played a “holistic assassin” on Dirk Gently for two seasons, is a cult leader in this series. She said it was a different role, and an intriguing one. “Imagine being so convinced of something,” she says, “that you are willing to die for it. It’s just the most alive you can be, right? She’s so driven and brave. It’s actually one of my favorite characters I’ve ever played.”

In the show, people use the Purge in different ways. Amanda Warren plays Jan, a hard-working employee at a financial firm who finds her path of advancement is limited. “Her only way to remedy that is she’s a woman who’s taken advantage of her opportunities fair and square,” she says, ” and the Purge is an opportunity.” Jan will deal with a lot of moral conflict in using the Purge to advance.

Showrunner Tom Kelly and director Anthony Hemingway (who will helm the first episode) say the Purge movie series will do well on TV. This story, for example, takes place ten years after The First Purge. “Ten episodes take place over one night like the movies do,” he said, “but through the use of flashbacks we really get to break out of the night and we get to see what has influenced our characters in the past and then inform the decisions they make or don’t make in the Purge.”

Finally, Gabriel Chavarria talks about his character, Miguel, who is very worried about his sister after getting a strange letter from her. Miguel is also a Marine, and uses those skills to survive the night. He admits he’s a fan of the movies and thinks they’d work well on TV. “Every episode feels like a movie,” he said, “so you get a lot more out of it. They created great characters, characters that I feel like the audience and the fans will get really mostly invested in…and it’s crazy. It’s exciting, that’s for sure.”

The Purge mini-series starts on Tuesday, September 4th at 10 PM Eastern/Pacific on USA Network. The first and last episodes will be simulcast on SyFy.

AMC’s Preacher is well into its third season, as Jesse is stuck in his home town of Angelville and under the thumb of his grandmother, Madame L’Angelle. In the latest episodes, Jesse’s wound up in a coffin and learns Grandma’s fate is linked with Tulip’s.

The stars of the show, Dominic Cooper (Jesse), Ruth Negga (Tulip) and Joseph Gilgun (Cassidy) along with creators and showrunners Seth Togen, Sam Catlin and Evan Goldberg, met with reporters at San Diego Comic-Con. What’s happened so far, including the latest episode, “The Coffin”, were discussed.

Cooper talked about how Jesse coming home has really affected him, even though he also wants to leave. “It’s amazing I’m confronted, each episode and each script that comes along,” he says. “I feel that I’m really scratching the surface of what’s being revealed about him. It’s a much, much darker side the more I learned about the grandmother as well as the family and the things he put up with and the things that he witnessed.”
“That’s been a very interesting part playing this season,” he continued, “how much he’s had to restrain himself from indulging too much in the brutality of it.” He’s referring to his time in the Tombs, where people literally fight for their souls.
Catlin also says Jesse’s relationship with his grandma is pretty frightening but also a bit sympathetic. “I think it’s creepier the fact that she loves Jesse,” he said.

As for the relationship between Cassidy and Tulip, she decided a couple of weeks ago to get him out of town for his own good. It’s a big moment for both of them. “I think she loves him so much,” Negga says, “that she wants to be as honest as possible. I think in that scene how much it really hurts and affects him. It costs her a lot, and I think it’s part of her maturity as a person and evolution.”
Gilgun also thinks Tulip did the right thing. “You have to be cruel to be kind and that’s what she did,” he said. “She needed to protect him and their friendship as well.” He got as far as New Orleans, though, before the Grail tried to get him back to force Jesse to be the Messiah again.

There was also discussion of how Rogen, better known for comedy, was able to get Preacher on AMC. He says it may be due to other failed attempts to turn the comic book into a TV show. “The world of Preacher has a lot of comedy and the book has a lot of comedy,” he said, “and when you look at the people who tried to make it before us, comedy is not the word that comes to mind.”
However, Rogen and his partners have created the perfect mix of horror and laughs to make it a popular part of the AMC lineup.

The meeting also discussed whether Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy can get back together as a team and if things will change between them, why Jesse is attracted to John Wayne and how they almost got to Angelville sooner than expected. Here’s the audio from the press conference courtesy of Soundcloud

Friday at San Diego Comic Con we joined the producers and cast of Fear The Walking Dead for a press conference to talk about where the show has gone this season, and where it’s going. Here were some of our top moments and takeaways from the press conference!

  1. There are many themes for the group to explore going forward, such as who they are within themselves and within the group; who are they to each other and how will they carry on Madison’s legacy will be touched on as well.
  2. Alycia Debnam-Carey (“Alicia”) says Alicia went from being “a regular teenage girl, to a fearless warrior in the apocalypse.” Without ties to her mother or brother, we’ll see Alicia purely as her own character; as a woman now.
  3. Producers said you never know who might pop up on FearTWD, whether that be TWD crossovers, or past characters from FearTWD itself.
  4. We will be seeing more of Al’s tapes and why they mean so much to her, what’s on them, and more over the course of a couple episodes.
  5. It devastated the cast to lose Nick and Madison in 4A. Colman says it’s a balancing act of grace, patience and being honest about your feelings so that you can tell a good story.
  6. The producers joked we could one day see frozen zombies; but other TWD universe projects are currently being worked on.

Below is the full audio clip of the press conference!

Fear The Walking Dead returns on August 12.
