Coulson, Phil CoulsonABC will stand with SHIELD in a big way this fall.

As expected, ABC announced late Thursday that Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD will get a second season. The adventures of Phil Coulson and his agents will continue on Tuesdays, as they try to battle evil forces despite the fact SHIELD collapsed after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The show has stayed in the 2.0 range throughout the season, despite competition from The Voice and NCIS.

There will also be another SHIELD show, Marvel’s Agent Carter, starring Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter, who battled HYDRA with Captain America during World War II. Aside from being in the first Captain America movie, she was featured in a Marvel One-Shot film that was part of the Iron Man 3 blu-ray. Here’s a clip from that short:

The show will feature her dealing with a post-war world, where her abilities aren’t getting a lot of respect. She also misses Cap, who gave his life in battle. She’ll be busy doing administrative work for the Strategic Scientific Reserve, and handling some special missions for Howard Stark. HAYLEY ATWELL Agent CarterIt’s likely some missions will be connected with the Cold War. This will lead to the creation of SHIELD, but it could be possible fans will see how HYDRA played a part. Fans who saw TWS already have a hint of what happened to Peggy after the war.

The show’s executive producers include Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters (who co-created Reaper), Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb, and Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote Captain America: The First Avenger.

No word yet on who else will be featured in the new series. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Agents of SHIELD’s second season will be split in half, with Agent Carter being shown in between both halves. That article is here. More information may be coming when ABC has its upfronts  next week.

Watch the season one finale of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD this Tuesday, May 13th, at 8/7c on ABC.
