Yeah, the episode is called Let Your Hair Down, but this is not about Rapunzel. Although chick has a really long braid. But considering she’s a Blutbad that uses said braid to strangle people, it’s not very reminiscent of the fairytale.
In fact, much in the same way nursery rhymes weren’t originally intended for children, it seems that in the Grimm universe (Grimmverse?) fairytales weren’t either, and now the writings that were meant to inform have been changed to be childrens’ stories.
As usual, the episode starts out with someone being killed and Nick and Hank showing up to the scene. And while I know that Nick is a bad-ass and all, it’s still almost creepy how calm he is no matter what he sees. I mean, a couple episodes back there was a body half eaten by rats, but it didn’t seem to phase him. I’m wondering if this has something to do with being a Grimm. Like whether Grimms are naturally able to handle super grisly scenes since they’ll often be seeing the bodies that have been attacked by beasties.
Again, this is an episode that is less about the murder (especially since we know it was Blutbad Girl, in the forest, with the extra long braid), and more about how Nick reacts to different situations as a Grimm. Once again he favors relying on Monroe instead of working with Hank. He says it’s because he can’t endanger someone else, which is more proof that he sees himself as separate from regular people and is embracing his life as a Grimm. However, in the process, he’s distancing himself from his friends and girlfriend, though I don’t think he’s really aware of it yet.
I do think it was a little corny and perhaps stretching the limits of belief when Nick holds up Blutbad Girl’s barrette and it’s like some kind of magical item with the power to bring back language and civility. I’m willing to believe that it could stoke some memories and possibly even make her less suspicious of him, but for it to be the only thing necessary to bring her back from spending most of her formative years in the forest? That’s a little unbelievable. And I know me and the Grinch have heart size in common, but the touching little moment where she says her own name and Monroe and Nick exchange glances started to get a little saccharine for my taste.
I have to wonder what that ride home in the car was like. Were Nick and Monroe trying to give the girl a quick rundown on how to behave normally in front of her mother and how not to kill people? How much speech and language comprehension had she recovered by then? And by the way, her mother did a wonderful job getting that hair sorted by the end.
I love the little sub-plot in this episode, with the group of beasties going to get a look at Grimm Nick. Both their fear and fascination promises a lot of funny situations to arise. Especially since one of them delivers the line, “Fifty bucks says you’re full of tree sap!” I mean, I can’t believe he could even say that with a straight face. Also, it makes me wonder what the beasties see when they look at Nick; how they can tell he’s a Grimm.
What have we learned?: Blutbaden are already at least 7 before they get wolfy, hair can be used as a weapon, and Santa Claus is real.
What’s going to happen?: Nick will probably get a chance to set the record straight with the beasties of the area. I’m waiting for a return of the Mellifers. Since they’re somewhat the messengers of the beastie world, I think they’re bound to turn up again sooner or later. And I’m waiting to see if the “he” that is so close is Captain Renard, or if we’ll be seeing a new adversary. And what the hell is Captain Renard anyway? We’ve never seen him go beastie. And even though we haven’t heard anything about Hank’s relationship with Adalind (Miss Hexenbiest), doesn’t mean it hasn’t progressed. So I’m waiting for that to hit Nick upside the head soon.
So what do you think will happen next? Will we see a return of the Mellifers? Is Nick gonna have to play nice with Miss Hexenbiest soon? Is it Grimmverse or Grimmosphere? Let me know in the comments.
