While the Buffy revival will be on the shelf for a while longer, one other Joss Whedon creation will get a new life as
an animated series.
Nathan Fillion, aka Captain Mal Reynolds, announced at Awesome Con in Washington DC this past Sunday (March 15) that plans are underway to revive the show as (according to a script page) “Firefly: Still Flyin'”. More later.
Here’s the announcement thanks to Facebook. This is part of the “Once We Were Spacemen” podcast from Nathan and Alan Tudyk. It should be ready by the end of the month.
Here’s another announcement via Instagram.
From what we know (thanks to Deadline), the show will take place between “Objects In Space” and the movie “Serenity”. If it really takes off, a new series set after the movie could be possible. The comics speculate on what future crewmembers of the Serenity would be. Maybe that would be possible. Ask Star Trek and Paramount Plus.
The crew will be there, including Alan Tudyk (whose character Wash died in the movie). Shepherd Book will be part of the show but voiced by someone else (Ron Glass, who played Book, died in 2016).
A live-action version could happen if the animated show is a hit. Still, it was hard enough to find the perfect crew for the Serenity. Who can take over, and do it well? It’s a problem that sounds familiar. Still, if it can be done, everyone wins.
Nathan is making this in cooperation with 20th Century Animation and his production company Collision33. Joss Whedon has given his approval as well. Tara Butters (Agent Carter) and Marc Guggenheim (Arrow) will be the showrunners.
Only one thing…where will it land?
Hulu or Disney Plus should be likely channels but it will be shopped extensively.
It’ll take a while to get it produced, but fans will be waiting with anticipation for the return of a classic crew who can be bad guys and big damn heroes.
Until then, keep flying.
Oh, and here’s that script cover page:
