If you’re seeing a surge in voices calling out for Black Widow today, you aren’t imaging things. In light of the very obvious omission of Natasha Romanoff in everything from T-shirts to toys, fans have had enough and are speaking out. How are we doing this? In the words of event organizer Kristin Rielly (our favorite Geek Girl, @riellygeek), “We have coordinated a massive multi-city flash mob for June 6, 2015, where hundreds of cosplayers will be dressed as Black Widow to send a POSITIVE message that this is a character we WANT to see more of. We want to see her star in her own movie, we want to see her on apparel, and she totally deserves her own action figure!”
Here’s The Mary Sue’s explanation of why there’s no Black Widow Avengers: Age of Ultron on t-shirts: Black Widow Missing From Ultron Merchandise
And toys? Oh, that’s a good one. Black Widow is redacted from her own awesome stunt in the most depressing take on marketing yet. The AV Club gives the details here: Avengers toy cuts Black Widow out of one of her coolest stunts
As you can see, Black Widow is getting the short end of the stick, and we think it’s time we made some noise and let TPTB know that WE WANT WIDOW!
For this event, cities from Seattle to Boston in countries from Canada to Australia, are hosting flash mobs at noon local time, June 6, 2015, to show their support and encouragement of Black Widow in all areas going forward. By using the hashtag #WEWANTWIDOW, we can let social media know our intentions. Hundreds of supporters are changing their social media profiles to Black Widow images in solidarity. And of course our talented cosplaying friends are showing their support and admiration of Natasha by emulation Black Widow attire.
The event starts at noon local time, and will proceed across the world in waves as time zones shift, and there are some amazing folks who have stepped up to the plate and agreed to captain their local mobs. You can see the list below. Even if you missed out, it’s never too late to show your Black Widow support!! Change your social media profile, hashtag the heck out of #WEWANTWIDOW and just let everyone know today that we see a need for change and have a fun, yet specific means of telling everyone!
