Filming is underway for the start of season 9 of Doctor Who, and it will mark the return of Missy..and a few more familiar faces.

 ***** SLIGHT SPOILERS BELOW *****

Doctor Who Death In Heaven BMichelle Gomez will return as Missy, the latest version of the Master, in the two-part opener, “The Magician’s Apprentice” and “The Witch’s Familiar.” She told the BBC it was practically necessary. “Things have been a little beige since I left Missy behind,” she said, “so I’m delighted to be putting my lippie back on. I’m positively dying to see The Doctor again!” BBC’s Doctor Who site has a video message from Gomez announcing her return, and talking about apples.

Showrunner Steven Moffatt agrees. “Everybody hide – Michelle Gomez as Missy was an instant hit last year,” he said,  “so she’s straight back to plague the Doctor and Clara in the series opener. But what brings her back into their lives is the last thing they’d expect.”

Moffatt wrote the opener, and Hettie Macdonald will direct. She also directed the classic episode, “Blink”, which introduced the Weeping Angels.

Doctor Who CapaldiJemma Redgrave will also be back as Kate Stewart, but she’s not the only familiar face. Kelly Hunter, who was the Shadow Architect in “The Stolen Earth” and Claire Higgins, who was part of the Sisterhood of Karn in the web episode “The Night of the Doctor”, will also be in the cast.

No word yet on a premiere date, but the press release says it will be in the autumn.
