The Guild Turns Product Placement into Merchandising Gold

I’m always looking at the business side of fandom, primarily how to get the product (series, movie, book, etc.) directly to fandom (viewers, readers, etc.) and to let the producers of such products know that fandom will pay for the product.  Or how the talent can produce their own product and sell it directly to fandom.

Felicia Day is an amazing business woman in addition to her artistic creativity.  When does she sleep?  Does she even sleep? She’s taken The Guild from a small web-series done on a shoestring with funding by fan donations into a strong business model.  She’s gone from burning season 1 DVDs on personal computers and handwriting hundreds of mailing labels to being the Warren Buffet of the Geek/Nerd world.  Creative folk like Joss Whedon and Jane Espenson go to Felicia to learn how to sell their product as the major studios do, including keeping the creative rights ala 20th Century FOX.  And she’s done this with constant respect for her fans.

Free Agents: A Tale of Two Stephens

 [album:36 width:0 height:0 border:1 align:right link:1 alt:0]

It’s not easy to import a successful TV show from another country, and make a successful version here. NBC had done that with The Office, and had hoped to do the same thing with Free Agents, a British comedy about a couple who have a one-night stand and try really hard not to do that again. It also featured Anthony Stewart Head as their boss, Stephen. When the show came to NBC, the network kept the emphasis on Alex and Helen, but featured the wacky staff more than Stephen. They also made him a lot less lecherous, but emphasized his snarkiness and Britshness, too.

What happened? The US version lasted two weeks less than the original. Ironically, the show was cancelled just days before BBC America starting showing the original. That gave fans a rare chance to compare the two versions, and how Head played Stephen in both. If fans of Buffy never saw Head in any other roles, they may be surprised about how different, and how funny, he can be.

Spoilers after the jump.

2011 Browncoat Ball in Rhode Island Oct 21-23 2011

The vision for the Browncoat Ball was that it would be an affordable fan-run event aimed to bring fans from around the world together to celebrate Firefly and each other.   It would be held in a different city each year to maximize convenience and attendance.

This year’s event is being held at the home of the first Browncoat rebellion against an overbearing Alliance, New England, which abounds with great history, art, culture, food and entertainment. The New England Browncoats group has been active for seven years hosting regular shindigs, CSTS screenings, and more. They have a full weekend in store, which should be a wicked good time, as they say up here.
