When fans of Doctor Who found out it would do an episode on Eurovision, but an intergalactic version, some fans wondered if Graham Norton would be included somehow.
He is, but that’s not the story.
It’s not about planets trying under-handed things to make sure their song won, or the host trying to control the show (like eliminating an ex who’s one of the singers).
It’s about someone who wants to use the Interstellar Song Contest (ISC) as a statement against evil and destruction…in the worst way.
There’s also some interesting revelations, especially in the last two minutes.
SPOILERS BELOW
The episode takes place in the 30th century in the Harmony Arena, or what if SoFi Stadium was a space station. The host, Rylan Clark (who somehow extended his career via cryogenics), is literally defrosted to get him ready. The Doctor and Belinda land just in time to see the ISC, and decide to stick around.
It seems 40 planets are up for the big prize, and French is recognized as an intergalactic language. Its Eurovision roots are showing.
Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson) is back again, and she has some gizmo with familiar logos. She’s also linked to the Doctor’s Vindiciator. Why does she want to go where Belinda wants to be, namely May 24th?
A threat emerges in the form of Kid (Freddie Fox), a member of the Hellions. They are an alien race who are not liked in the galaxy. He’s got a chip on his shoulder and a revenge plan against the sponsor, Poppy Honey. He says the company bought the planet, destroyed its poppies to get the flavoring, and burned the planet. Killing the audience (including three trillion watching) and blaming Poppy Honey is his plan.

While showing the dress rehearsal to make sure no one knows, Kid puts his plan to work. He plans to use a Delta Wave to kill the TV audience, while sabotaging the arena by popping the air bubble. More than 100 thousand are in space including the Doctor…and Mrs. Flood.
Some are not affected, including two guys who are mad someone else is sitting in their seats. More on that later
The Doctor’s about to freeze, when he sees….

Yes, that’s Susan (Carole Ann Ford). That’s enough to snap him out of it, but why that vision? Spoilers, maybe.
He soon gets a confetti cannon to zap him back to the arena, where he meets Mike (Charlie Condou) and Gary (Kadiff Kerwan), those ticket holders. Mike, the nurse, revives the Doctor, but he thinks Belinda is dead.

She isn’t. She’s with Cora (Miriam Teak-Lee) , one of the contestants with a secret. Belinda thinks the Doctor is dead, and is stuck in a place and time she doesn’t know. Her panic and fear are very understandable. She just wants to go home.
They still hope someone will save them.
What about the live audience? They can still be saved thanks to a massive mavity field, but the Doctor must stop Kid and his plans.
Cora also mentions that the Hellions from Hellia are severely misunderstood. In fact, she’s one of them. Her horns were cut off because she wanted to sing. It’s a heart-breaking moment, and not the last one.
The Doctor is soon able to get to Kid, but he also shows he can get really dark if people (and Belinda) and threatened. Belinda actually hears this, and is surprised he can get this cruel. Still, who can blame him?
It’s not like what Kid is doing. He could have tried other ways to expose Poppy Honey and ruin them. Let’s assume journalism integrity isn’t important in deep space or the 30th Century. That’s why this is happening.
The Doctor does find Kid, and tasers him several times. Belinda sees this, and the Doctor knows this. That, and another vision from Susan, snaps him out of it. A few fans pointed out this is why he needs a Companion to rein him in. The last thing he needs to be is worse than the threat. She forgives him, maybe a bit too quickly. Maybe they should have had a discussion about his darkness. He should admit that’s a side of him he doesn’t like but it’s there.
With help from Mike and Gary, the audience is also saved along with the show.
There is one last act: Cora singing about how her world was destroyed. It’s even more heart-breaking, but soon the audience gives her massive applause.
Poppy Honey is in big trouble. Her song will cause more damage than Kid wanted to do, and in the right way.
One question: if Rylan Clark has been around for centuries, why not clone him for future generations?
At least they turned Graham Norton (talk show host and Eurovision staple) into a hologram for its museum. However, he also tells the Doctor and Belinda that Earth was destroyed on May 24th. No one knows how or why.
They run back to the TARDIS, but it has stalled…and its doors have been blown open. That’s the sound of May 24th.
Now here comes the cause…
the experience of floating in space has affected Mrs. Flood…and she’s now beside herself. Look familiar?

That’s right. Mrs. Flood is the Rani…and so is the younger version, played by Archie Panjabi. NewRani is upset she had to bi-generate with Mrs. Flood, but it couldn’t be helped. Now, they are going to spread absolute terror, which is what Flood said last Christmas.
So, what now? Earth is doomed, of course. It’ll turn into WishWorld, and that means a lot of other Big Bads will be coming soon.
For now, this is the Unholy Trinity, subject to change without warning.
UPDATE: This is actually two of the Unholy Trinity. The third is coming next week, and some think it’s Missy. If so, it’ll be a solo act very quickly (maybe).

And if the Doctor can’t stop them, who can? Is there a reason the Fugitive Doctor and Susan Foreman came back, and could other allies we haven’t seen in a while help out?
There IS an episode on May 31st, which will exist….really.
