Just weeks after Marvel presented a new kind of super-hero with a Muslim teen getting powers through interesting genetics, it now has what could be the equivalent of a mindless beach book.

Still, She-Hulk Attorney at Law shows what happens when someone gets super-powers but is determined to have a normal life. Sure, she turns green, large and powerful just like her cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). Her life becomes a little better and changes the legal system.

It begins with Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) about to prepare her closing arguments as an assistant DA. Then something strange happens…she talks to the audience and admits this is a TV show. Isn’t that Wade Wilson’s job?

Cut to Jen and Bruce driving down the road talking about things, like whether Captain America had sex. Then, an alien ship suddenly blocks their path. They get in a rollover accident and both are cut. Some of Bruce’s blood gets into Jen’s wound, different from the blood transfusion she got from him in the comics. That’s how Jen becomes She Hulk. It’s a little far-fetched, but it’s possible.

Things quickly change for her when some men get a bit too aggressive to her, and she gets REALLY aggressive. She later finds herself at Banner’s secret lab in Mexico, which Tony Stark gave him and jokingly threatened to take back one day. Still miss you, Metal Millionaire.

He also learns Jen’s blood handles the gamma radiation differently. Even as a Hulk, her personality is intact. She can eventually de-Hulk herself at a moment’s notice. That’s something Bruce could only dream of.

Most of the episode looks at the relationship between Bruce and Jen, but it’s still pretty good. It’s not every day someone gets super-powers and someone to help through the transition. There’s a bit of one-upsmanship, but it’s great.

Still, Bruce has his doubts Jen can be a lawyer again, but she is determined. Despite the fact she’s a little shorter than her Hulk cousin (even in Hulk mode), she is just as powerful. That’s to prove a point.

So, back to the trial: Jen is about to make her closing remarks, when some badly dressed yet strong woman shows up. She’s Titania, played by Jameela Jamil from The Good Place.

She starts tearing the courtroom apart, but Jen in Hulk mode stops her. Then, she resumes her close. Cue credits.
This is a very different show, and Marvel should take that chance.

Tatiana Maslany wowed fans playing several people at once in Orphan Black, but she makes She-Hulk her own. The CGI with her and Ruffalo is OK, but her personality sells the show. If we’re lucky, we’ll see him again.

Some cameos are scheduled for the nine-part series including Wong, Daredevil and the Abomination from the Edward Norton Hulk movie. Oh, and they do settle the “Captain America had sex” issue, and keep the show clean.

It’s interesting the channel airs the show on Thursdays to avoid a conflict with the next Star Wars show, Andor. There was concern attention for Ms. Marvel was lost because it competed with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jen won’t have that problem this time. It also makes Disney+ a little closer to being HBO Max.
