Making good on making Syfy great again (remember, the original re-branding slogan was “Imagine Greater”) Syfy added The Magicians to its roster late last year. And what a special gem it is. Based on Lev Grossman’s books, the series takes a real-world view of the impact of magic and those who wield it, and tempers it with a fantastical plot that drives our characters and their sometimes regrettable actions. Harry Potter this ain’t. Sometimes truly beautiful moments transpire, but often very bad and very nasty things happen, and there’s no Dumbledore to fix them. Quentin, Quinn and the others have to live with the repercussions of their actions. We’re easily caught up in their quest to find the legendary land of Fillory after one of the characters in the books is disclosed as real.
