I’ll admit that I was initially one of those naysayers who didn’t like the switch to a new opening song for the HBO/DC series Peacemaker. By episode 3, it was growing on me and I was doing a deep dive on this band James Gunn calls his favorite band who he refers to as “objectively the greatest rock and roll band in the world.” By episode 5, the band’s “Oh Lord” as well as “Dreamer” was on my ever evolving Peacemaker playlist and I was singing it in the shower.
Now I can’t get the Foxy Shazam earwig out of my head!
Check out Peacemaker’s season 2 intro title sequence below.
The Foxy Shazam official video for the song “Oh Lord.” Clearly there is a Freddie Mercury influence here and I approve.
The lyrics to Oh Lord also happen to align remarkably with many of the things going on in Peacemaker S2 (OK, no surprise there, this is a James Gunn production, after all). But it’s the chorus that sums up Peacemaker’s plight in season 2:
‘Cause there is always a wrong to your right
And there will always be a war somewhere to fight
And God knows I’ve had some rough fucking years
Oh, oh, Lord, oh, Lord, keep on keeping on
Oh Lord by Foxy Shazam
Julian, it’s a hungry world
They’re gonna eat you alive son, yeah
Oh, Julian, when their fangs sink in
I’ll stitch you but then I gotta throw you back in, ohhh
You just try and sleep, even though you’re alone
You just close your eyes boy, and dream of home
And light is always on, you just keep that in mind
When you wake in the morning, you’ll be satisfied
‘Cause there is always a wrong to your right
And there will always be a war somewhere to fight
And God knows I’ve had some rough fucking years
Oh, oh, Lord, oh, Lord, keep on keeping on
Julian, I thought I told you this
But I guess I was wrong, yeah, yeah
Oh Julian, it probably scares you now
In the future it counts, you got to trust me, trust me, yeah
So lock this song away for a darker day
When you’re down on your knees, screaming “Oh Lord”
I am always there, you just keep that in mind
When you wake in the morning, you’ll be satisfied
‘Cause there is always a wrong to your right
And there will always be a war somewhere to fight
And God knows I’ve had some rough fucking years
Oh, oh, lord, oh, lord, keep on keepin’ on
La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
La, la, la, la
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
La, la, la, la
