Well, this episode was creepy in ways I wasn’t expecting.
The investigation starts after a woman running for her life gets hit by a car, then gets smothered to death by an unidentifiable stranger while the driver calls for help. After the coroner reveals that she died of smothering and not from the accident, the clues lead Nick and Hank to a bed and breakfast she had visited shortly before her death. During the visit, Nick sees the owner, Billy Capra (Patrick Fischler), for the goat creature he is and goes off to do some research, which includes a visit to Monroe. Nick learns the Ziegevolk (which is what the goat creature is called) is able to manipulate women with his pheromones. Nick and Hank soon figure out that the Ziegevolk is a serial rapist and all they need to do is to gain enough evidence to prove it. They find the women Capra has caged up (literally) in the basement of the bed and breakfast, but he escapes. Fortunately, they’ve put a tracker on his car and they follow him. He gets hit by a bus during the chase and ends up being put into an ambulance, unfortunately by a female paramedic who is probably gonna release him and become his next victim. Which just leaves you with an icky feeling.
Meanwhile, a (I’m guessing French-Canadian?) Reaper has come to kill Nick to avenge the Reaper he shot down in the first episode. But before he can find Nick, Captain Renard reveals himself to be the Reaper in charge of the city and forcibly orders him to leave, chopping off his ear for insolence in the process. His being strong enough to earn a high ranking position among the Reapers explains how he’s able to maintain a level of control that kept both creepy Aunt Marie and Nick from seeing his true form.
So this entire episode is about beasties that date rape, but worse since women think they want the interaction. I feel like I should be writing more, digging deep, analyzing, but I just feel way too creeped out. Especially knowing the Ziegevolk is probably free and raping people again. Ew.
What have we learned?: Captain Renard is a high ranking (and probably powerful) Reaper who’s territory is Portland, creepy guys who can attract hot women are suspect, and Ziegevolks are into parkour.
What’s going to happen?: I’d think Capra is going to show up again, but he strikes me as a rape and run kinda guy. I don’t expect he’d come back of his own volition to get caught, and I don’t foresee him striking a deal with the Reapers which would convince him to return. (I don’t think the Reapers necessarily have a use for his power to enchant women.) And I think Captain Renard is going to make a trap that Nick can die in without raising suspicion.
Are you equally traumatized by the rapey creep factor of this episode? And on a scale of 1-10, how awesome is that scythe? The comments section below awaits.
