Review: Eastwick: Pilot

Based on John Updike’s novel The Witches of Eastwick, which also spawned a 1987 film of the same name, the television show Eastwick premiered this week on ABC. This series is the second attempt at bringing the famed New England witches to the small screen, coming after an unsuccessful 1992 adaptation. The current version has a couple things going for it, namely writer Maggie Friedman (Once and Again, Jack and Bobby) and David Nutter, the renowned “pilot director,” whose successful pick ups include The Mentalist, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Supernatural, Without a Trace and Smallville, to name a few. Still, despite the talent involved in the recent remake, Eastwick is at best uneven. (Contains spoilers.)

CW’s The Vampire Diaries offers viewers a delightful feast for the eye. From dim hospital hallways to foggy, crow-infested graveyards, the sets are both creepy and beautiful, while the cinematography makes nice use of shadow and light. The cast, too, is predictably, yet pleasantly attractive. Vamp brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) are fairly ogle-worthy, while Elena (Nina Dobrev) is darkly lovely.
