If you watch Doctor Who, then you’ve wanted a fully functional Sonic Screwdriver, or at least one that did something kinda cool. Maybe you even have the toy, the pen or the actual screwdriver version. Sure they look great, make noise and light up, but in the end they’re kind of a let down. Those kid’s toys are now obsolete with today’s debut of the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control.

The Wand Company (they make “magic” remote control wands) and BBC Worldwide unveil the squee-worthy gadget at tonight’s Preview Night at San Diego Comic-Con at the BBC America booth #3629.

Based on the Eleventh Doctor’s Mark VII tool, the copper-plated die-cast metal replica is a gesture-based universal IR remote that can control our primitive earth home entertainment components such TVs, DVD/Blu-ray players, iPod docks, etc. This means that there are no clumsy keys for us pretend Time Lords–you have to wave it about in the air to make it work, (almost) just like The Doctor!

The unit comes with a flashing green tip, four modes–including a practice mode–and three memory banks to control multiple devices. FX Mode adds authentic Doctor Who sound effects to each of the 13 gestures, as well as intermittent Morse code messages, which is probably cool if you actually know Morse code. It will also work without sound if you don’t want to freak out your pets.

Something this fancy can’t be left unprotected, so it has a PIN-based security setting to keep out unauthorized lifeforms. There is also pretty display case/stand made of transparent aluminum (maybe) and decorated with Gallifreyan writing.

As time travel is still something they haven’t quite worked out, you will have to wait until August 31, 2012 to own the Sonic Screwdriver Universal Remote Control, when it goes on sale exclusively for the first 60 days at ThinkGeek and the BBC America Shop in the US, and Forbidden Planet and Firebox.com in the UK.
