Well, possibly, but not in the way we expected.
The Rani is still determined to revive Omega and rebuild Gallifrey, even if it means destroying the Earth.
However, a weird loophole comes out of nowhere to buy the Doctor and his friends some time. That’s quickly set aside when the fate of one person drives the main story. It also shows how far the Doctor will go for that person.
Then there’s the unexpected ending…
SPOILERS BELOW
When the Doctor falls on the balcony from the Bone Palace, a door suddenly shows up. It’s Anita (Steph de Whalley) from the Time Hotel, who has apparently learned a lot in her job. She’s also going to be a mom

The Earth is being kept at May 23rd in one of the rooms, but not for long. She’s able to keep Ruby (Millie Gibson) and Belinda (Verada Sethu) safe in their reset realities . Anita does play a role in breaking the reality Conrad has built, while he’s still loyal to the Rani (Archie PanJabi).
Her goal is still the same: reviving Omega and using his body and DNA to rebuild Gallifrey and revive the Time Lords. She and Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson) are upset about Anita did, but are determined. When the Rani says “No one is Lord and Master of Me”, that’s a sign her plan may not turn out well. After all, if Omega is revived, he won’t consider the Rani his Master.
Still, the UNIT crew, including Ruby, Shirley and Mel Bush (Bonnie Langford) are reunited to battle the Rani and her Bone Beasts.

The story soon centers on the fate of Belinda’s daughter, Poppy. Wish world or not, she is considered real by Belinda. She wants Poppy to exist no matter what. the Doctor thinks Poppy exists because she is a memory from “Space Babies”. If she still exists when everything is settled, would she be the ancestor of Mundy Flynn?
Then the Rani shows up, explaining herself more clearly. Her acting is much better than in “Wishworld.” She explains how she survived a “genetic explosion” that made all Time Lords infertile, and used a Time Ring to get to Earth. She also reveals she was also Mrs. Flood and mocks Ruby and Belinda.
The Rani just wants to revive Omega, and she’ll leave the Earth alone. However, that means the fake reality is broken and Poppy disappears. Belinda doesn’t like that. Also, should we believe the Rani. She speaks highly of the Time Lords while considering humans to be insects…and that the Doctor is just like her. He doesn’t do that, as we all know.

Then things get intense. UNIT fights the Bone Beasts while they try to get to Conrad and the Rani. Thanks to some fast thinking, they do just that. Ruby even has a transporter to get inside.

Ruby confronts Conrad, who’s armed. However, she’s able to outsmart him and get the baby God of Wishes to break his control. It’s not certain, but she figures out how to use the baby to grant wishes. She even gives one to Conrad. It’s too good for him, but the show thought he should get a second chance.
Meanwhile, Belinda and Poppy are put in a special room outside of time and space. They’ll be protected from the wish world, but it’s possible both will be in limbo forever if things go bad.
The Doctor confronts the Rani, just in time for her to bring forth Omega. The Doctor admits, he is curious.
Omega does emerge, but he may look familiar to Buffy fans. He looks like an uglier version of Mayor Wilkins at a certain high school ceremony.

Omega decides he wants to devour the Earth and anything else. He starts with the Rani. Let’s say what happens to her tends to happen to principals in Sunnydale. Mrs. Flood uses the Time Ring to leave quickly. This is good news, because having a dangerous elderly enemy is a nice touch.
The Doctor is able to fight him back with the Vindicator and send him back to the Underverse (also known as the Upside Down according to the Doctor).
So, the end, right?
Not quite. Poppy is suddenly gone, and Ruby is the only person who remembers her. There’s also some other reality glitches, including the fact Ernest Borgnine was still alive. So, how can the Doctor “fix” the glitch? He heads for the TARDIS alone, but gets a sudden visitor.

And we thought Eleven calling Clara to give Twelve a chance was wild. She finds out the Doctor will use some regeneration power to realign reality to bring back Poppy. Thirteen sort of tries to talk him out of it, but knows she’d do the same thing. It was a trip seeing Jodie Whittaker again, and proves she was one classic Doctor who should have had another season.
She also channeled the Second Doctor, talking about redecorating.
Does it work? The Doctor wakes up outside Belinda’s house…and Poppy is there. The power of retconning even adjusted the past to show Belinda kept talking about why she had to get back home.
It wrapped up with a wonderful farewell between the Doctor and Belinda. Some were upset Belinda’s tenure ended with motherhood, but she still has a career. Besides, who says we won’t see her again. Revisiting Companions is a thing now.
There was also no goodbye for Ruby, but maybe she’ll be back, too.
The finale had to resolve a lot in 66 minutes or so. It may show that seasons should be between ten and 13 episodes, like they were 15 years ago. Both “Wishworld” and “Reality War” could have been stretched out to four episodes easily.
The point is, Ncuti, we hardly knew ye. Two years is WAY TOO SHORT of a tenure. He should have stayed for a couple more seasons, but he certainly added a lot to the role. What’s missing in his resume is battling Daleks and Cybermen.
THAT. IS. A. CRIME.
Still, we wish him the best in the future. (Update: Ncuti provided a statement on his exit via BBC News)

Now, about this:

There’s nothing wrong with Billie Piper being the Doctor, except the closing credits don’t officially say she IS the 16th Doctor.
So, who or what is she?
According to a press release, she’ll only say “who, how, why or when, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
If she’s like the Rose Tyler we knew in 2005, there’s no problem. It can work.
Remember, the Doctor has taken the forms of a man from Pompeii and a guard from Gallifrey. It would have been a surprise if he regenerated into Clara Oswald, but she’s already in a TARDIS somewhere with Ashildr.
Having the Doctor become dead ringers for Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart or even Ian Chesterton would have worked, too.
Fans are split over having Piper as the 16th Doctor. Maybe this was done to make sure no one forgets them while The War Between The Land and Sea will unfold next year.
In any case, this will keep discussions going for quite some time.
Overall, it was a great season with Ncuti and Verada leading the way. The final two episodes were clearly over-stuffed with plots and details. The next series should be ten episodes minimum for better pace.
Let’s have more Companion updates, too, especially for Belinda and Ruby.
AND…if Billie is the next one, we’ll support her.
