It’s a brand new day, yeah, the sun is high
All the angels sing, now you’re gonna die
Go ahead and laugh, I’m a funny guy
Tell everyone goodbye, it’s a brand new day.
It’s from Doctor Horrible, but this villain could make it his song.
A bad guy Who fans haven’t seen since the 1960’s is back for one last game.
No matter what, it’s the 14th Doctor’s final fight, followed by a new beginning.
HOW that happens, no one expects
SPOILERS BELOW
It starts in 1925, where a man looks for a male doll. He meets a strange man with a German accent at a shop in Soho. The shop keeper suggests some toys, although in a Needful Things kind of way. The customer finds a doll called Stooky Bill, and buys it. He mentions it’s part of an experiment by his boss, John Logie Baird. He was a pioneer in mechanical TV. Just like in history, the image works, but the doll’s head is singed, Baird wonders what if the doll could move, and make a sound.
It does, and makes a giggle. The Toymaker’s plan is starting.
Long-time fans remember the Celestial Toymaker wearing an Oriental costume, while trapping the First Doctor and his companions into his special world where the rules of his games control everything. You can click here for a clip from his episode from 1966. Today, Neil Patrick Harris portrays him as a sinister but playful villain. It’s really creepy, maybe too creepy for Bad Horse. He may be charming, but he is practically a god, and may have added more power.
The Toymaker remakes Earth into one angry Twitter, where everyone is certain they are right and won’t accept any other views. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? He does it through the Giggle he started as Stooky Bill, burning the image into every screen. Thanks to a new Korean satellite, the world is completely online. That makes the Giggle easier to attack everyone. Strangely enough, it doesn’t affect British politics (as Donna seems to tell the audience).
UNIT is OK thanks to a bracelet provided by the Vlinx, who seem to be just visiting and decided to join up. Not only that, Melanie Bush now works for UNIT after years traveling in space. Bonnie Langford is a pleasant surprise, as she’s an assured computer expert. She’s come a long way since Paradise Towers.
Anyway, without the Veedex, the Giggle would affect Kate Lethbridge-Stewart in a very bad way. At least she’s made UNIT a force to be reckoned with.
Eventually, the Toymaker makes his play. He starts with a puppet show where he tells Donna about the Doctor since she left, and makes him look bad. It also shows both men don’t know about Clara and Ashildr spinning in their own TARDIS.
The Toymaker also claims the Master is now a gold tooth and God is a jack-in-the-box.
Both men play a game of High Card, and the Doctor loses. That doesn’t mean it’s over. Now it’s two out of three, and back to the present. Before that, the Toymaker’s shop folds itself into a toybox. More on that later.
During this time, the Doctor and Donna comment on how the Doctor just keeps going and doesn’t stop. She wonders if he got his tenth form back because he’s wearing himself out. He’s aware of what good he’s done, and how he’s had to pay a big price. They also get separated and see examples of the Toymaker’s power.
Then he returns by overwhelming UNIT with a Harold Hill uniform while lip-synching to the Spice Girls.
Then, the Toymaker has control of the Galvanic Beam, ready to do more damage. The Doctor tries to get him to leave with him, where the Toymaker’s powers can be used better. He has a better idea: he’ll play the final game with the next Doctor.
The 14th Doctor is hit, and starts to regenerate. This time, he is willing to go….except he doesn’t.
This is what happens, much to Mel and Donna’s shock.
This is bi-generation, where the old form and the new form can both exist. It was considered a myth. Thanks to the Toymaker, it’s now a fact. Russell T. Davies said in the Radio Times it also applies to the previous Doctors. So, they each have their own world, which may also mean the previous Doctors and Companions can come back somehow. It’s happened before, and now it’s easier.
This is being discussed like crazy among the Who fans for quite a while. Some like it, and some don’t. You can see all the opinions in the usual social medias. Still, if we can have more than one Slayer, and more than one Pope, retired Doctors could work if done right. That depends on the future.
Others, though, have issues on the new Sonic Screwdriver 15 will have. Again, give it a season or so.
So, two Doctors against the Toymaker? They choose Ultimate Catch. Drop the ball, and it’s over,
For a while, all three men make catches that are very intense, The Toymaker loses, when the ball slips his grasp. He winds up being folded in his own toybox (which Mel was smart to have), but he insists he’s got allies.
Oh, and his gold tooth with the Master inside has fallen off…and later claimed by someone. But who?
Even though the battle has been won, some people still died, which overwhelms the 14th Doctor, but his future form is there.
The talk both Doctors have in the TARDIS about what has happened, and the people they lost, is touching. It’s almost like when Eleven called Clara to give 12 a chance, and it worked.
So, what’s next? Donna has a new job with UNIT (and should get some honors for that big charity donation), and the Doctor can try a normal life for a while. He got his TARDIS while 15 has his own thanks to a big mallet and residue from the Toymaker’s antics.
It’s the most unusual passing of the torch, in honor of the 60th anniversary.
Still, there are questions. Who took the Toymaker’s tooth, and how quickly will the Master be back? How long can UNIT trust the Vlinx, and will Mel and Donna be ready if something happens? Will 14 have an itch to travel, and which Noble will join him?
And who are the Toymaker’s allies and is one of them furry?
As for the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa has quickly established himself as the new Time Lord. It’s no longer a freshly regenerated Doctor needing an episode or two to get his bearings. Number 15 is settling in well, and it helps Gatwa is already well-known for shows like Sex Education and the Barbie movie, He won’t have to wait long to get back into action. On Christmas Day, he’ll deal with a mysterious blonde, and a lot of goblins. It’ll be shown on Disney Plus, along with the three specials
