SDCC 2016: Supergirl Press Room

Everyone is getting very excited for Superman’s entrance on Supergirl. The cast of the show and Executive Producer Sarah Schechter stopped by the San Diego Comic Con press room to talk about what we can expect for season two.

Superman isn’t the only exciting thing happening on the new season, there are new big bads and other characters will be exploring themselves as well. Supergirl will also be continuing to figure out herself as Kara.

Melissa Benoist loves the constant ebbs and flows on the show: “Maybe when she feels secure and extremely confident in the Supergirl side of her life, she doesn’t feel so great about her career or relationship with Miss Grant,” Benoist said.

We spoke with Benoist, Tyler Hoechlin, Chyler Leigh, Mehcad Brooks, Jeremy Jordan, David Harewood and Schechter about the journeys the characters are taking in season two.

Benoist doesn’t believe there’s any change with moving to The CW. She said they really honed in on what they loved about the characters last season and they’re delving more into that this season. She said the scripts are more vibrant, more rich and fun with the change to a younger audience.

The Supergirl star also thinks it’s about time for Superman. She always wanted more of him and wanted Kara and Clark to have more interactions in person.

Hoechlin told us as much as he could about his take on Superman, “without getting fired before” he starts, he joked.

The former Teen Wolf star is excited about this “incredible opportunity” and is focusing on how Superman fits into this story and not a particular version of him from a comic.

He was sold on the character because of his meeting with Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg. They all had similar interests in what made the character interesting. Their similar creative ideas on the character was what really drew Hoechlin in.

Alex may or may not have scenes with Lynda Carter, who will be playing the President of the United States. Leigh was very coy as she said there may be undercover scenes. The actress was able to tease that season two starts with a bang and we get to learn a lot of things in the first three episodes that set the stage for big villains.

She wasn’t able to give us too much, but Leigh can tell us how much fun she has on set. She said filming Supergirl is the most fun she’s ever had. She was thrown into the stunts quickly and said they are very challenging, but fun. She’s stubborn and tries to do as much as she possibly can.

“I have a 12-year-old son that literally thinks I’m the coolest person on the planet,” Leigh said.

Brooks was super nervous when he first got the role of James Olsen because he’s black and James isn’t. This led to him asking many questions. The creators told him: “We’re going to recreate Jimmy around you” for a new generation of fans. He seems a little more settled with his role as he joked around at the round table.

Everyone, of course, wants to know what’s going on with Kara and James. Brooks joked that the season opens with a wedding. What he can tell us is that Superman is supportive of Kara and James.

Winn is the ultimate Superman fan. Jordan said meeting Superman and maybe being able to help him out is a dream come true for his character. The actor teased a real fun and cool dynamic between Clark and Winn.

That’s not all that’s in store for Winn. He’ll be leaving Cat Co. and going somewhere that he can explore is full potential.

Jeremy was on a roll when he told us that a big crossover should be coming sooner than later. He wants all the nerds to get together and just really nerd out.

Harewood had no idea going into the show that his character was going to be a Martian. He only learned about the reveal a week before filming. This time around he knows a little bit more and is willing to give us just a taste of what’s to come.

There’s going to be tension between Superman and J’onn. There’s history between them that we get to see right away, Harewood said.

Also, Alex and J’onn will be exploring their individual identities. He can’t say any more than that but he’s looking forward to it.

Schechter won’t tell us who is in the spaceship. The part has been cast but she’s letting the audience speculate.

What she can tell us is that Winn is going to become more involved with the DEO.

“Which means we get more scenes of David Harewood and Jeremy Jordan together, which to me is endlessly entertaining as nobody annoys Hank Henshaw more than Winn,” says Schechter.
