It’s been about a month since Doctor Who fans saw the official arrival of the 12th Doctor, Peter Capaldi. Now, we know what he will wear.
The official first image of Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor was released Monday (1/27), and he has decided that bow ties aren’t cool, but Doc Martens are. Here’s how the BBC described the new look:
Sporting a dark blue Crombie coat with red lining, dark blue trousers, a white shirt as well as black Doc Marten shoes, the look was created by Doctor Who costume designer Howard Burden. Commenting on his costume, Peter Capaldi said: “He’s woven the future from the cloth of the past. Simple, stark, and back to basics. No frills, no scarf, no messing, just 100 per cent Rebel Time Lord.” While lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat added: “New Doctor, new era, and of course new clothes. Monsters of the universe, the vacation is over – Capaldi is suited and booted and coming to get you!
Right about now, hundreds of Who fans will be going through thrift stores and shoe stores to unveil their version of the Doctor’s new clothes. Some early attempts may be spotted at conventions over the next few weeks, especially at Wizard World New Orleans, where Matt Smith is expected to attend.
It’s also a bit reminiscent of the Third Doctor’s style, except Capaldi is capeless and using a basic white shirt rather than the puffy shirt and dinner jacket Jon Pertwee used.
Production of this year’s shows is underway in Cardiff, but an official premiere date hasn’t been announced.
