Why is the rum gone? Probably because one of these cut-throats stole it. And you should thank your lucky stars they spared your life. If you’re looking for light-hearted humor and loopy swagger from your pirates, Black Sails is not the place to find it.

Starz new show, set to premiere Jan. 25, is a gritty interpretation of pirate life with a high body count and no remorse. The show follows Captain Flint (Toby Stephens, Vexed, Die Another Day) who is trying to find a 5 million dollar score and place himself as king of New Providence Island. A task made more difficult by the score’s elusive location, his crew’s dwindling faith and Captain Vane (Zach McGowan, Shameless) preparing to depose him.
